HBO Max says the classic 1939 film “Gone with the Wind” will be removed from its library until it can “return with a discussion of its historical context.”

IMHO, we are going off the rails and the eventual blowback isn't going to be pretty for all parties concerned.

Frankly, I'm not remotely a fan of this movie, so I cannot speak as an expert, but I cannot think of much in that movie that should cause huge difficulties today. In fact, the maid won the Oscar for Best Supporting actress...

If anybody can post any overt racism from GWTW (and BTW sorry to hijack, but it's entertainment related), I'd be glad to rethink my position.

Classic films are classic films... they are a product of their times and the times they are depicting...

Well, there goes all my western favorites. No way they'll get rid of Gone with the wind and keep any western made film from the 50-70's.

 

My wife decided to put "The Sting" (1973) in the Blu-Ray last night... They have the N word in there 3 or 4 times.. Not sure I would have even noticed it if everybody wasn't on pins and needles...

Although all in all, the few black people in that film come out pretty well represented. Johnny Hooker (Redford) bases his entire reason for revenge on the killing of his black con partner, Luther.

 

This kind of thing makes me angry. It's usually Republicans who are wanting to ban books & films, so it's also confusing. If Team D is now getting on that bus, we're screwed. I hate reading fluffy content.

A classic and hilarious comedy like Stir Crazy could never be made today. We really have gone backwards in some ways.

But its to be expected. The left is very authoritarian. While they dont necessarily have the govt currently to back up their authoritarian ways, they certainly have American culture in the palm of their hands. Anything they dont like is going to be purged. Once they have the govt, which I think is something that is coming sooner or later and will last for some time (until people finally realize how deeply they fell for dem lies), they will truly crack down on those practicing the dark arts of wrong think.

 

I wonder what the end game is for the easily offended. There is just no way to make the world a safe space for them. We can take Elmer Fudd's gun away, burn books, add gay characters to cartoons, and ban movies, but there will always be something that triggers the delicate.

I just watched Scalphunters (Burt Lancaster, Ozzie Davis and Telly Savalas) excellent film 5 stars, Ozzie played a runaway slave caught by the Indians. I expect those type of movies are done.

Yeap ban the movie that just happens to have the very FIRST African American women EVER nominated for an Academy Award. It broke ground for African American Women and they want to kill it because she played a servant, hello she said she took the role on to show people what it was like! Typical lefties, pandering to African Americans hoping it helps their feelz…. I would be disgusted if I was pandered to like this, it's demeaning.

I'm probably as anti-gun (assault weapons etc) as anybody on here, and I have zero problems with a cartoon idiot hunting cartoon wabbits with a double barrel shotgun (maybe because he never actually gets Bugs with a head shot).

 

What in the world is going on? As horrid and sordid as it is, it's a true representation of a different time in our history. Censorship of books is bad enough. How can we possibly learn and grow, as a people, without knowing our history?

Show me where "Republicans" are behind any recent banning of any book.

The reason behind past efforts to ban both of the books you mentioned was because they both contain racial slurs, and the most-recent attempts to ban and censor both of those books have come from OUTRAGE Inc. on the left, and not "the Republicans".

The Republicans have done a good job of leaving all of the Tipper Gore "warning labels" and the "moral majority" crap behind them as they've shifted ever more to center, while the Democrats have yanked the steering hard to the left in their effort to drive themselves ever more towards the lunatic fringe, and off the edge of the rational world.

Oh, and the first Academy Award ever awarded for a role played by an African American- yeah, that achievement has just been cancelled, and it wasn't "the Republicans" that did it.
