Minneapolis neighborhood that vowed not to call police in wake of Floyd death is already being tested by 300-strong homeless encampment

"A progressive Minneapolis neighborhood that pledged not to call the police in the wake of the death of George Floyd is now dealing with a 300-strong homeless encampment in a local park, according to reports."

"Traffic has reportedly increased in the neighborhood around Powderhorn Park, as drug dealers seek to meet their clientele displaced during the civil unrest, rioting and looting following Floyd’s death at the end of May. At least one person overdosed inside the park and was brought out by an ambulance. Prostitution has also been reported in the area."

"The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has since passed a resolution not to evict people from any city park and has called for increased funding for longer-term housing for campers, according to the Star Tribune."

I wonder how this will go over with residents if it becomes long term and/or if the crime does begin to spread out of the park and into their homes and lives.

It seems like at some point a variety of things are inevitable: residents will want to use the park again, crime will spread out of the park, the park will become overcrowded, residents will begin to question how much it is costing for portable showers and toilets etc (and who is paying), and so forth.

As an outsider, it will be interesting to watch this unfold.

    Thoughts?

They should be happy they are sharing their park with those less fortunate. They should spread the word to increase the homeless population to acceptable liberal levels.

If you're SO is abusing your kids and beating you up on a weekly basis you might to call 911. There a few dedicated police who will respond it just might take a bit longer now.

Liberals always love it when they can force these kinds of problems on others. The folks who actually own property around the park will likely not enjoy it as their property values plunge, and their safe neighborhood descends into chaos and vice. When the children start to go missing....

And the residents are actually feeding the vagrants:

Since the camp appeared, the community has organized shifts for delivering warm meals, medical care and counseling to people living in the park. They persuaded officials to back off an eviction notice served shortly after the campers arrived.

I've been in bad financial spots, but I was never homeless. Some people are in a hard time.

This, quote from the article above, from OP, gives me a thought that perhaps a housing crisis should cause the government to step up its housing programs to give every single person a house to live in regardless of their finances. Housing should be a universal right.

Not saying whether it's a good idea or not, but here's an idea for discussion.

Well, if they're going to spend the effort to provide basic necessities for the people in the park, then why not the housing next step???

I do like that they are looking out for the homeless, but their good deeds could end up attracting even more and making the problem like an episode of South Park. Combined with Drug dealing and prostitution, property values may drop a bit.

Unlike the drug dealer, the prostitute can wash her crack and sell it again!

Dibs on waterfront, and a 3 car garage would be sweet. Cant afford either now.

Edit, clarification, I can afford it, but I'd be saving zero for retirement.

One would think that cities gradually turning into open sewers due to increasingly insane Dem Party politics would simply cease voting for Dem Party politicians.

MASSIVE liability; a disaster waiting to happen.

The Democrat Lockdown created the Democrat Depression which created the Democrat Riots.

    Now this.

Coming to every city near you.

Sadly, these types of disaster experiments will need to run their course. We will need tangible evidence that this idea of no police and everybody getting along is a pipe dream, and a daft one at that. I hope that for the most part American governments at their varying levels can stay in a holding pattern while these social experiments fail so that actual realistic ideas may have a chance to be undertaken.

For example, increasing the funding of social services and other responders. That I can get behind. I don't know that it should come, at least initially, from diverting police funding but the idea has shown itself to be successful before. It's a realistic step forward. Police accountability boards, another great idea.

The only ideas that are truly going to work are the ones that don't try to treat police as if they exist in a vacuum. As if police are the only part of the equation. The criminals certainly have a role to play too, although that statement should not be taken to mean that anyone having a run-in with the police is a criminal. Nor that police should not be held to standards as to how they treat criminals.

Crime will always require police. The two are inseparable. Any solution which tries to deal with only one side of that coin is doomed to fail before it even starts.

There are good ideas out there that don't have to involve radical foolishness. But many will need to learn that firsthand before we can dispense with the communes and the utopian nonsense.

Don't knock it - if Minneapolis has *solved* the homeless crisis, it will become a Mecca for the homeless.

    It's a win/win.

All manner of problems attach, but I do believe that housing is a universal human right.

The devil, however, is in the details.
