It was not to degree implied by some.

But in the end who cares. The laws back then were a bit different, we all might have been criminals under them :)

I think the OP is making reference to the embarrassment or pride some folks feel in regards to their ancestry and the absolute hypocrisy and ignorance of some of those folks.

I have a shady side, I’m claiming British criminal DNA as the reason. I do like British ale, but not gin. I love British Heavy Metal and even enjoy a cup of tea. Yeah I can buy into this theory.

Are the Aussies proud of their outcast heritage?

They did, standard practice back then for colonial powers to do so. But is anybody ashamed of this today? I’m certainly not.

Hell we started a country as a bunch of rebellious outlaws and rift raft in the eyes of the Brits. They thought little of our ability to pull off the rebellion. They were wrong :)

Same thing thing the Union thought of the Confederacy. Both sides in that conflict underestimated the other but the North certainly thought the South would fold at Bull Run. They were wrong :)

We have a proud heritage of being looked down upon by our “betters” as low lives and scum. I say relish it.

I’m not either. But I do have a new found respect for them after the Brexit vote to leave. Both votes, the first was ignored by the left so they had to vote a second time.....ahhh the left...sometimes they don’t hear too good the first time you say something.

Pretty sure the rugged outlaw badge is a point of pride for the Aussies.

Pretty cool Irish music scene today in Australia due to that exodus.

You are wrong. Australia is a multicultural society. We are a nation of immigrants. Even our First Peoples migrated to Australia via land bridges, possibly from Indonesia.
As to penal colonies.... Not all of Australia could be described as such. South Australia and Victoria, for example were founded by free peoples looking to take advantage of the many opportunities available. And then their was the Gold Rush, which was an epic migration event... and so it goes.

Perhaps Americans would do well to research their stereotypes about Australia, before proclaiming them, lest you be seen as ignorant and prejudicial towards your cousins across across the sea.

    So..?

Grandfather rule applies. Unless it involved my grandfather (or father) it is utterly irrelevant to me.

The only part of your post that is rational and credible is that you "had no idea".

I believe there is truth in some of your story. Britain's goal was the same in America as it was in Australia. To colonize it needed labor to occupy space and do the hard work, so there were obviously some criminals.....maybe a lot! However don't pedal the lie that Trump said Latinos are criminals. He said some of them are criminals and that is a cold hard fact. Most of the young girls that get here illegally have suffered rape. So be careful how you quote our lying media.

I apologize. I didn't know you held the PF franchise for quoting lying media.
