I know there has always been a stigma about mental health issues within the department and it is VERY much frowned upon for officers to seek help for problems before they escalate. Basically, if you want to keep your job and move through the ranks, you stay silent about that kind of thing.

The psychiatrist interview and test are looking for psychopathic attributes because that is who they want. The real psychological test and polygraph is the police academy itself: written testing, physical exercise, sleep deprivation, stress, ect. One day in a second police academy I attended I took 8 written tests and failing any one test meant one chance to make up, but you are unlikely to do better because of another series of tests. That's when the police really get to know you. Pick any police academy and in 10 years 80% of the recruits will NOT be in law enforcement.
