Wouldn't that mean that if the officer is convicted and punished, he "brought it on himself" too?

No he was shot in the back after the taser had been fired. There was no immediate reason to kill him.

You need to learn a little more about the deadly force laws. Resisting arrest is not an automatic excuse to use deadly force.

    1. A taser is not a lethal weapon.

    2. He fired behind him while running away. Not even a half turn.

    3. Bottom line: he was shot in the back while running away. Someone running away from you with no harmful weapon is not a threat. Shooting an unarmed man in the back is the act of a coward.

I never claimed it was, I said you don't need to be under arrest for a cop to place you in cuffs.

Quit making stuff up I never said.

He was a man who had been drinking and fell asleep whose blood alcohol was barely above the legal limit. He ran because he was on probation. That does not make him a dangerous thug. The fact that you don't care is part of the problem. The police do not consider a taser a deadly weapon. The death was not necessary.

So you weren't trying to justify what the policeman did?

So you are saying any criminal or juvenile delinquent that chooses to run from the police deserves to be shot and killed???

IF Rayshard Brooks had been white, we wouldn't have seen a more than a local news report.

You would think after seeing all the video's of how perps end up after the perps resisted officers the perps would learn to cooperate with the law. You can always complain later if you feel an injustice took place.

Would you agree that any perp who resists any arrest should be shot, because that is not what the deadly force law says. Would the same rule apply to a man with no criminal who was walking home from the store and died hours later because of a police restraining hold even though it was mistaken identity or a woman who died in bed in the middle of the night, or a man who ran when a police car drove up to him in a park?
Police have an awesome responsibility and often have to face danger, but police must be ruled by law too, that is the issue.

In hindsight, maybe. They were in a struggle. He fired the taser and then he was shot. I have not heard for sure, but someone claimed it was a two shot taser, but it could have been a one shot, two shot or multiple shot depending on the mode.

He shot almost immediately after the taser was fired. I doubt that the policeman was counting taser shots at that time. He was just trying to survive.
It does not say they should be shot. If the policeman feels like his or a civilian's life is threatened, it is justified.
The DA had said previously it was a deadly weapon. However, if the policeman is incapacitated from the taser, Brooks could have taken his weapon and killed him.

Police do have rules, and should obey the law- but to demand they be perfect is totally irrational. They too are people, and do a hell of a lot better job of controlling themselves that most citizens do. We sometimes hear of the disproportionate number of blacks killed by police, and on the surface, by population share, that is true. However when you look at the criminal levels among blacks and whites, you see that it is directly proportional to the extent of interactions with police- which takes the racial aspect out of the picture.

Only a fool set's fire to his own house because he's mad at the disposal for jamming. That is somewhat like defunding the police because of a half-dozen incidents when you have 400,000 officers putting up with endless attacks and violence. Prosecute the police who violate the laws, just like anyone else.

We don't attack all black people because one violates the law, and we shouldn't attack all police when on violates the law. However, that IS what he left is doing.

I agree, with the exception that some people attack all blacks or all protesters when but a few are criminals. What most people on the "left" want as far as police are concerned is restructure the police in a way that leads away from confrontation to a way where the same results can be achieved with less confrontation. This can be done because there is one law enforcement agency who has been trained to do this successfully, the warden service. That doesn't mean that police can't escalate if it is necessary. To allow any person to kill another, "because I said so" is bad policing. To protect individual police officers who also break the law is also bad policing. All blacks are not thugs because they are black and all police officers are not thugs because they wear a badge. Let's deal with the issues not the personalities.

I didn't comment on that at all, I was only responding to the handcuff mistake made by the other poster.

No, Mom would say, "Brooks started it and the cop ended it". You're wanting to "start" the confrontation with the actions of the cop. Talk about cherry picking.

There are two sure fire ways to survive a fleeing man armed with a taser.

    1) Stop chasing him
    2) Stay beyond the range of the taser

Also, though a taser can kill, it is so rare that police are often tased as part of their training.

Saying the cop was trying to survive doesn't reflect the reality of the event.

There is also another way -- if you are a cop and called to a scene just don't go.

Well, if you wanna go there in this case.

If the police failed to respond, the manager would have had to close the drive-thru, Brooks would have slept it off, woke up and drove home. No one dies. Wendy's is still standing the next day. Win-win if the cops refuse to respond

As another option, what would have happened if paramedics responded rather than police?

He is running off with a dangerous weapon which could be used on someone else. A shooting can be considered justified if it puts the officer's life in danger, or it puts someone else in danger.

Is that really what you want the police to do? Stop chasing someone because to continue chasing might end up with the person being killed? How about the person not fighting the officer, not grabbing the taser and running and not turning to fire the taser at the policeman?

Is that the message you want the public to get? Just run and you will be safe?

Getting to where you can't even fall asleep in a drive through, steal a taser, or fire it at a cop anymore.

Let everyone decide when and where to stop a motor vehicle and when to move it. Far out. Give peace a chance. Where my fries?

Is it "necessary" when looting and burning begins? Assume no threat to life, "only" property.

You see, the cops have not been out there arresting peaceful protesters like the Chinese cops are doing in Hong Kong. They just haven't.

No. I said nothing resembling that. I described an alternative to a police response. I'm fairly certain getting drunk and falling asleep at Wendy's drive-thru isn't on anyone's bucket list. And people decide when and where to stop motor vehicles all the time. Some get towed, others are tolerated. What's your point? If the Wendy's manager called a towing company, nobody would have died in that case either.
