Hate Has No Home Here

I like to ride my bicycle on a trail that begins in a town named Lisbon Ohio. Recently I began noticing yard signs throughout Lisbon proclaiming 'Hate Has No Home Here'. So I went home and looked it up online and this is what I found...

This all got me to thinking firstly about all the hatred in my life. Honestly I can say I hate no one. All the hate in my life is directed at me from people who have no other reason but that I am an old white male. And secondly what is the purpose of these signs? Who are the people being targeted with these signs and why?

I think there is a lot of virtue signaling going on there but I'm open to suggestions.

 

Maybe the sign posters were not referring to racial hatred. What I see a lot of online is a tremendous amount of political partisan hate. The left hates the right and the right hates the left. Luckily I do not see this in real life. As a fiscal conservative and usually a republican I work and associate with people that are mostly liberal progressives. These people are my colleagues and friends. We may disagree politically on some issues but I respect and love these people. I get a totally different feeling in the online world. There seems to strong partisan divisions where there are constant insults and attacks on the other side. Blame is instantly assigned to the other side and never accepted, (at least not without another example of the other side doing it too). I often wonder if people only act this way because on the anonymity online or if this is how they treat others in real life. If this is how they always treat others, then everyone should be putting up these signs.

 

Ok. I can agree with that. I guess maybe I'm feeling a bit defensive because of the hate directed at me.

I want to say that I appreciate your post. You could have easily made this into an ugly race (or other) war and you didn't. You expressed yourself well and made your point without derision. Like you, I have no answer to why SOME people can hate with, seemingly, free abandon. It's sad. But, I think all we can do is continue to be that bright light in a sea of darkness.

 

As a fellow old, White male, (aka wicked, evil and greedy White devil oppressor) I sense the same thing.

I don't know if your/our feelings are justified or not but I think that it is noteworthy that the only statues that have been targeted for destruction are of White men regardless of their being associated with the Civil War or not.
It's as if it's suddenly fashionable among some to destroy White men in effigy.

I, too, don't hate anyone and make a special effort to be generous, respectful and friendly to minorities but from time to time my friendly "Hello" is returned with an angry and silent glare.

Those occasional and infrequent angry and hate filled glares are not going to change the way I treat people but I do think that the recent, hate filled antics of BLM etc has made it more socially acceptable to openly hate older White men simply because of our race, age and gender.

Virtue signaling is inauthentic pandering my friend. Those willing to do it have questionable moral standards because they want to appear moral and righteous...until it effects them.

For example. Rich white peoples proclaiming to Defund the police...I’m with BLM!! But don’t you dare riot in my Neighborhood or I’ll call the cops.

 

I don't bother with hate. it's exhausting and time consuming.

 

Virtue signaling is people saying look at me I’m morally superior.

Victimization is your word. I said I was hated for being an old white male. The hatred is using the energy of the hater not me.

 

It's the nature of the woke culture; trying to fight hate with hate, which is about as effective as fighting fire with fire.

Virtue signaling, indeed. The biggest haters on the planet are almost all leftist of one variety or another.

 

They are doing nothing but saying there is no home for hate. Why do they need to advertise it? Who do they need to know this?

My personality is irrelevant in this conversation. The people who hate me don't even know me.

People don’t hate you because you’re old and white. If someone hates you maybe it’s because you’re an a hole. I’m not saying you are an a hole, I’m just hypothesizing as to why someone might hate you.

I feel the hate but more of a broad brushed sense, not personally directed at me, but rather the mass of people that apparently think like me.

my social circle is reasonably small and carefully chosen, its also quite diverse. We are virtually all on the same page with exception to some outliers that have different views but still don't direct any anger at me, that would be impolite

I don't find it that difficult to brush off the general accusations, but they do make me indifferent to the cause, stubbornly indifferent.
