NYC's mayor said schools will reopen in the Fall.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/us/nyc-schools-reopening-de-blasio-trnd/index.html

Approximately 75% want kids to return to school while 25% are unsure.

I would be hesitant, too, if I lived in NYC because of the second wave and percentage of infections and death rates as opposed to other major cities across the nation.

We can't close down indefinitely but we cannot open too soon either.

    What do you think?

P.S. I bet MANY parents have a new found respect for teachers. ;-0

There's probably a reason why NYC was able to get the coronavirus under control with such a densely packed, diverse population.
In order to be the greatest city on earth, you have to have a pretty capable population, smart enough to each do their part during an emergency.
We saw it after 9/11 and we are seeing it now.
The rest of the country would do well to follow NYC's lead and ignore the virus deniers.
I have a lot of confidence that they will handle any second wave intelligently.

What do you think he should have done differently and should do differently if a second wave hits?

Thanks for sharing your views on this. I believe it's hard for ANYBODY to address this perfectly because it's like nothing we've ever experienced. It's nice to know that some people are satisfied with their local responses. I guess we will have to let history tell us the true victors.

He should have stopped the riots and put the rioters in jail.

The first thing he did when the virus hit was to let out as many criminals as possible out of jail, with the virus spreading among them.

He prohibited the city employees tracing virus positive people from asking if they had been protesting.

The city council passed - with his encouragement and approval - a new budget cutting $1 billion from the police department even though shootings are up 40% this year.

He threatens to cut necessary city services for NYC while protecting and spending billions on illegal aliens.

From conversation with my relatives still in NYC, Mayor Bill de Blasio is very good at being a POS mayor. So give him credit for that at least.

In Northern Virginia (probably whole state), we have been polled between:

    - 100% in school
    - 2 days in school and 3 at home
    - 100% at home...

I suspect the "hybrid" plan is going to win out, while still allowing for some to do 100% at home.. This was only advertised as the plan for the 1st semester.

I want my kid to be safe, but he's a Senior and I cannot imagine going the entire year learning at home...

Hope he stays safe also. Why not 3 days in school, M-W-F, with T, Th, and S to disinfect the schools?

Not my call, but I'm sure they are looking at all options.....

I suspect the 2 days in school will be rotated so Group "A" goes M-W and Group "B" goes T-Th, with evenings for cleaning and Fri-Sat for full cleaning..

I know there's no more "dating" in HS, but I'd like my kid to at least see a girl again before he starts college (probably from home too)

    :heartbreaker:

Edit - Just thought some more about that plan... Maybe Group A M-Tu, Cleaning on Wed, then Group B Th-Fri.... that makes more sense, which means it doesn't stand a chance....

That is a sentiment held by many people. I can understand how the protesters/rioters feel, but, the way it's been approached was not a good idea.

I was absolutely floored when I read about that.

I can see how that would have helped tremendously.

Clearly, defunding the police is NOT a good idea. There has to be a way that we can solve this issue without cutting budgets for these essential services. Unless, of course, we want it to turn into the Wild West. ;-(

I can certainly see why people would have a problem with that.

It might be naive, but I want to believe that *something* positive HAS to come from all this chaos. I don't know what they will be but I want to hope it can happen. The alternatives scare me.

State and city governments have a big time problem with budgets if they don't get a bail out.
All they can cut is teachers, cops and firemen.

They better be asking the teachers what they think about it.

I hope they do, but I doubt that will happen. Since when have teachers really "had a voice" in how things are run? I honestly don't understand why we don't value our children's teachers more. Outside of ourselves and family, teachers spend the most time with our kids.
