Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid statue branded ‘racist fish’

I didn't think it could get this insane. I'm surprised they didn't pull it down. What's next for Denmark:

 

Nothing insane about this, simply idiotic vandalism. It seems you're not familiar with that statue's history.
That article mentiones earlier cases of vandalism. In 1966 the statue's head was sawn off, in 1988 the right arm was stolen, in 1998 the head was sawn off again and in 2003 the complete stature was thrown off its base and disappeared in the water. That stupid slogan will be removed and that's that. But who knows, it might be the end of Denmark, once and for all.

 

Lol, while it may be meant seriously, I am fairly confident this is just someone's idea of satire. That ugly af statue has been used to demonstrate all sorts of political, ideological or personal acts of vandalism since someone dumped it in Copenhagen and it became the least impressive tourist attraction in Denmark, and the world probably.

Absolutely correct. It has been vandalized more times than I can remember.

 

We speak English fluently in all of the Scandinavian countries as well as the Netherlands. Americans are forever boasting that we'd all be speaking German if the Americans had lost the war. Well, the Germans lost the war and look what happened.

George Orwell in 1984 spoke of the desecration of statues, along with Big Brother,
govt surveillance and Thought Control. Wonder how he knew, back then in the 1940's.

 

I remember running into a Dutchman who boasted he spoke several European languages and I asked how and why and he just shrugged and said “Television” Holland is a very flat country and we can pick up Tv channels from Germany and France and . Still do not know to this day if he was pulling my leg or not

I lived in the Netherlands for a few years. The Dutch don't dub their TV, which means they watch French, German, British, American shows in their original language and Dutch TV stations simply add subtitles underneath, same with movies btw. This is indeed one reason why many people from smaller countries whose languages aren't really spoken in other parts of the world, often have remarkable good foreign language skills due to massive language exposure.

 

Oh I agree. But the message was clearly not targeted at anything Danish. It was an attack against black people in the US and was probably carried out by politically right minded non-Danish people who had just left a bar and perhaps done as a dare

 

Some years ago I met a couple of holidaying Dutch girls who ended up staying for a week in my flat which I shared with other house mates. That was a fun week. They spoke in a very strong Dutch accent when speaking Danish. They both spoke fluent English but in a very strong American accent which I found quite funny. They were taught English by an American teacher

 

Sure, but the target of statues, representations of things, that attracts interest.
And the Vandals didn't engage in thought control and other "Orwellian" things.

 

He was pulling your leg. First of all, we need only travel a few hours and we are in another country, with another culture, and another language. Who wants to stay at home on summer holiday? Secondly, doesn't nearly everyone wish they could speak several languages? It's no fun speaking English in other countries unless all you want to do is find your hotel and the railway station. I speak 4 languages well and would like to speak even more.

 

Maybe yes, but I find that very difficult to believe.

 

I don't think they asked for permission but just sacked the place without so much as a "By your leave."

 

In the mid 90's, my elementary school class was in Copenhagen and we stopped at the Little Mermaid statue. Didn't understand why people took photographs of the thing, then and I still don't. We got the more than thousand year-old Jelling runestones in Jelling, that first declared Denmark to be a Christian kingdom and where Harald Bluetooth declared himself the unifier of Denmark. But tourists just want to visit Copenhagen, a city burned down so often it hardly has anything newer than the 19th century still intact.*angry Jutish mumbling intensifies*

I doubt it. I am Danish. This could simply be humor. Not politically right-wing, or left-wing, humor, just people taking the piss because... well, they can. Danish humor is generally irreverent and very ironic in nature (though there's a generational element to this truth). I got no idea what the "racist fish" is supposed to be about...which I also think is precisely the point... and thus, by Danish standards, funny. Embrace the absurd. If this thing is what I suspect it is, there is no "attack" on anyone. Just someone out there trying to say: "Hey guys, chill out and have a beer together and laugh at yourselves a bit".

 

I don't mean to criticize the Danes and I'm not going to do it now either, but ....... one thing really bothers me. Not about the Danes but how the hoards of vandals and car-torchers and gang-rapists and stone-throwers behave "over here". I am not excusing them but you know Denmark did join the invasion of Irak (for one example) and are members of NATO (for another example). Again, I am not criticizing the Danes (I admire them) but I do wish these b'stards who are destroying my country (Sweden) would realize that it isn't us who've done them harm. I guess they think "white is white", the racist buggers.
