My wife’s friend was saying prices for real estate more than halved in New York in the last 6 months.
Is there a real flight going on? Where are people going?

They have been leaving, but C19 accelerated the process considerably. I would not want to own residential or commercial real estate there. :)

They aren't, the population is actually rising, I looked it up tonight.

    Don't believe the news folks.

Not sure on specifics across the state but here in SWFL out of the last dozen sales i've made in florida 4 have been from NYC. Normally that would be 1.

Pandemic, deaths & looting have caused the population to rise?

Link that please. I'd like to eat some crow for thinking the opposite would happen in most major metro areas.

Add moronic democratic leadership that enables rioters, punishes those who resist and drives employers out of their cities. That would seem like a good reason to abandon ship too.

That’s the thing - I didn’t get it from news, it’s an observation from a local resident.
I remember seeing articles somewhere not long ago that many people chose to move out of New York.

I think the incompetent city management we see in the larger cities will cause some flight from the cities. I left the city 35 years ago and I would never go back.

NYers are definately fleeing in droves, and it's not just a COVID panic.
It was happening long before coronavirus slammed NYC, but the trickle has since turned into a flood.

And it's not just how many are leaving, it's also a matter of WHO it is that's leaving.
It's the people people who(used to) pay all the taxes that keep the state/city afloat that are leaving.

    That is NOT good.

Oh, and I myself am an escapee from NY. I Snake Pliskened over a decade ago.

One of the happiest days of my life was the day I saw "Welcome to New York" in my rearview mirror.

I hope that they are not coming to Connecticut. We have had enough infestation of NYC types in Connecticut. I suggest that they go to Arkansas or Oklahoma or Mississippi.

Well honestly I doubt that most real estate sales in New York or any other major metropolitan area are going to result in a commercial replacement so the population is probably just going to downgrade in quality as it downgrades in price.

    White flight type scenario?

    More like green flight.

The money makers are tired of having their pockets picked, and they're vamoosing.

Thank you I really couldn't think of another term to use besides white flight but I can tell you when I moved away from a big city it wasn't just the whites moving out it was anybody that had enough money saved up to get a dam truck.

My parents couldn't sell their house immediately so they just turned it into a rental and it took about 5 years to finally sell at a loss, but it was better than raising kids in a bad environment.

I drove by the old place a few years back and it was quite shocking how bad the neighborhood looks now.

The wealthy who can readily afford it are fleeing, not the average citizens. High end real estate prices are falling, but not in half.

There is no ten year period like the very recent past. Two things will drive the exodus out of NYC. Taxes and the realization that being cooped up in close proximity with 8 million other people may not be the best idea. And then there are the politics.

    Alrighty, let's do that then.

    NYC-Population-E21_0.png

And again, it's not just how many, it's who.

The who that are fleeing are the wealth generators(the tax base), and those that are moving to New York City are the dependant types who are attracted to NYC's insanely-generous social services programs and "sanctuary city" status.

This is what you call "a disastrous trend".

I agree with your "lol" though.

It is pretty funny to watch the collapse.

    ***edited to add**

I'm still waiting for you to provide those citations I requested.

Yes. It's over for New York. Lying Outlaw China, Antifa and BLM have succeeded where Osama Bin Laden failed.

Covid-19, BLM protests and a liberal mayor are turning the city into a no-go zone as murders skyrocket, shops are looted and 500,000 middle-class residents flee.

Two bullet-ridden bodies lay sprawled on bloodstained concrete steps. Alongside, relatives of the victims are wailing and collapse to the ground. In another part of the city, a gang of youths use spray paint to disable security cameras before robbing a corner store. Later, video footage captures police officers sitting helplessly in their patrol car as a baying crowd hurls glass bottles at them.

This is lawless New York – a city that was once America’s glittering crown jewel but which risks descending into mob rule.

Murder figures have skyrocketed and a combination of the coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and weak political leadership is in danger of achieving what Osama Bin Laden never could: bringing the Big Apple to its knees.

Only Trump stands against the combining and increasingly deadly lynch mobs. Your only safe act of resistance against the rising destruction of our nation, is to Vote For Trump!
