Being 44 now .. It would be very hard to leave America. IT would have to be an English lang with nice warm weather.
    And only dry heat lol
    I live in NEvada

If language was not a problem I would probably choose somewhere in the Loire Valley of France or along the coast of Greece. I spent 3 weeks in the Loire Valley last year and it was beautiful. I would love to purchase a small Chateau and have my own little villa. I spent a few nights in an old Templar chapter house just outside Tours and the building and grounds were phenomenal. The people, the food, the drink was just fantastic.
I was last in Greece just after the Olympics but when we were there we saw some amazing property about 30-45 minutes outside Athens that was along the water front. Beautiful, calm blue waters just minutes from your back door. The guide with us mentioned the price for the property was about $500,000 to 600,000 US. Property like that would run in the millions back home. Given some of the political issues in Greece I would probably be reluctant to live there at the moment but the location was breath taking.
My wife and I have always considered purchasing some property in Europe after we retire to use as a base for travel. I think foreign ownership varies depending on the country so it is something we need to investigate.

I'd move to Springfield, Oregon for a few years.
I'd either settle (hope to grow old, die and have my funeral / remains out there) or move on (somewhere else, maybe Hollywood, CA or Bel-Air) or back to my native London (United Kingdom).

Springfield seems like a different pace of life to what I'm used to, but I'd certainly like to try it, move to Springfield that is.
It's not like I don't look up houses for sale in the area from time to time either (I actually do, I totally do that).
Just seems pretty in Oregon, plus they've got an airport in nearby Eugene (Oregon) where I could fly in and out of (no direct flights to London) but I could get a flight to another flight if I ever wanted to go to London for whatever reason while living in Springfield.

Ah, per chance to dream eh.

    The attractive upside;

    Downside;
    It's a bit of a police state I hear.
Also, the weather in the winter, I doubt I'd enjoy that aspect of it.

Bamff, Calgary or Vancouver. Vancouver is probably to much city for me but I loved it there. And Calgary seemed very nice. And Bamff was just beautiful.

I'd join the Peace Corps and go wherever they assigned me. Outside that, I think I would like anywhere people are kind and helpful to one another without ulterior motives. Oh, and I can stand cold temperatures better than hell hot places. You can always bundle up under electric blankets and throw some logs on a fire. There are just so many clothes you can take off (and remain decent). ;-0

I'd move to Canada or Australia because I've never been outside Europe/Asia.

I have lived in France, Spain, and Romania but I only miss Spain. Spain is absolutely one of the best countries to live in.

Its alot easier to move to Canada, (20$ no visa requirements besides my citizenship/s) than Australia for me. They almost beg for people in my current area - Romania. I have two citizenships, speak 4 languages but sadly English is my worst. I dislike the cold but I am well familiar with it.

I imagine living in British Columbia until I die, but its kinda hard to do it with small kids, a hesitant wife and during these times.

Near Darwin city, Aus Northern territory is second on my list, Im not sure how my body will react and adapt to the southern hemisphere and tropical weather.

Having worked overseas my favorite countries outside of America are Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. Although I love Quebec I would prefer British Columbia as a permanent place to stay. The Republic of Ireland is where my ancestors are from so I could be happy there. New Zealand's south island has the most stunning scenery and with views like those I could live with mostly sheep for neighbors. ;)

    France.
I already have a house there that I inherited from my father.
Great history, food, scenery, healthcare system, people are mostly very friendly and I already have a small grasp on the language.
Oh and castles, so many castles.
Unfortunately, as a result of the insane Brexit vote I no longer have automatic rights of residency and will have to seek permission but hopefully this will just be an inconvenience and not a bar to living there.
My plan is to retire there like my father before me.
Not that I don't like my own country but England is only a short ferry ride away so I could return regularly to see friends and stock up on Marmite and decent cheddar cheese.

I'd move to either France or Italy. It helps that I speak both languages fluently and have friends and relatives in both places. Also I am a dual citizen of the US and the EU so I can do it anytime if I want to. Currently I don't want to. But I don't entirely exclude it, for after I retire.

My European country hasn't left the EU so I can do it anytime. I agree with you regarding the advantages of France except "mostly very friendly" although it varies a lot regarding whether or not you speak good French. I do (almost perfect) so I'm very well treated there, but before I learned fluent French I didn't find them very friendly. They take a while to warm up to you (a foreigner) and are very protective of their language and culture. But yes, once they did warm up to me, they were friendly.

My place is in a very rural area.
Mostly farmers. Accents so strong that my poor French is virtually useless.
I'm guessing your experience is Paris or one of the other big cities.

Indeed, Paris. I do know France very well; I've visited most regions and most important cities. But primarily Paris. I've visited two thirds of Italy as well. I've never been to parts south of Naples but I've been to pretty much everywhere north of Naples except Trieste.

I think I could live anywhere English is the primary language. At least I can't think of a place where it is that I would find unacceptable.

Well, there are a lot of places that speak English.

    You're welcome.

Technically, but then there are Scotland and northern Ireland where the English is a wee bit not.

I've learned that views are great for vacations, but shouldn't be a primary reason to move somewhere. Its all about the people - that will determine how happy you are in a new land. And I completely agree with you about the climate - tropical locations are, again, great for vacations - but not a place to live year round.

Yes but even the Scots and Irish can speak clear English if they try hard enough.
We've got Edward I to thank for that.

My own experience is that Mediterranean climates are optimal when it comes to good weather all year round.

I could handle moving to a nice little cottage in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania. The scenery there is spectacular...

Not so sure about the Scots. I saw T2 Trainspotting. Totally unintelligible.

Come to think of it I am happy here in Alabama. The weather ain't too bad and we have hunting, hiking, fishing, riding country roads , and the mountains look nice. We have wild azalea in the spring, and black eyed Suzan in the fall.... Y'all.

I feel the same way about where I live. I'll be quite happy spending the rest of my days here in Virginia.
