They are being asked to work, just like the 142,182,000 other Americans currently holding jobs. We go to work, wear our masks and maintain social distancing, wash our hands frequently, keep a log and disinfect door knobs and touch points every 3 hours as mandated by the guidelines at our work place. They are merely being asked to do the same.

Whether they return to work, or not, is up to them.

Are you an elitist? All the Truckers are working, the stockers are working, the ranchers are working, the grocery stores are working, the manufacturers are working, maids are working, landscapers and gardeners are working, cooks are working, miners are working, the plumbers are working, the roofers are working, the electricians are working, the HVAC techs are working, the broadband suppliers are working but heaven forfend that a teacher is asked to get off their ever expanding ass, at the end of the summer, and stroll into a classroom?

I bet you are real big on "power relationships" and "oppressed/oppressor dynamics" and all that jazz.

If you don't want to return to work, don't, someone else that wants to will take your place.

 

Those people aren't being asked to work with KIDS...who have no concern about being infected.

If you have to spend day after day in a closed classroom with kids...you have a high likelihood of getting sick. If you get sick with this thing your health could be affected for the rest of your life...and you CAN die...no matter what your age

I think the schools have to open regardless of how "ready" people think we are. The harm caused by the closed schools far outweighs the the potential for harm to children who are almost never harmed by the virus.

I am starting to agree with that. We cannot suspend our lives indefinitely.

However, as Lesh pointed out...what about the teachers? The whole staff and faculty actually?

I think it depends on where you live.

In areas where the WuFlu has had a negligible impact schools probably will be ready to open in September. In places like New York City perhaps not.

Personally, I think this is a decision parents and localities should decide, not governors and the federal government. There may be a role for states in some cases such as athletics where teams will be playing beyond their localities.

 

That sounds feasible. I wonder, though, how it could work in practice.

* If a teacher tests positive, are all his/her students quarantined?
* Are there enough tests to test all staff and faculty multiple times?
* Are there enough masks being made to handle the volume that would be needed?
* What about all the parents that volunteer in schools?
* What about the kitchen staff? They encounter all the kids in a given day.

Life, as we've all known it, will change dramatically, is changing dramatically.

 

Oh, I didn't even think about sports and extra-curricular activities.

I absolutely agree about the government's role in managing this. That will only delay any real problem solving and may not meet the needs of the people on the local level. If there was ever a time for communities to work together, this is it.

 

The 'One Size Fits All' approach Governor Northam has taken here in Virginia has caused a lot of unnecessary harm. Had he been willing to work with local officials most if not all of that unnecessary harm could have been avoided and we'd be in a lot better shape restarting the economy. Now, a lot of businesses won't be coming back and neither will a lot of people's jobs. The decreased tax revenues are going to hurt the state in a lot of ways, too.

 

The people you need to ask are the teachers.
Just because the little devils don't get very sick doesn't mean they aren't carriers.
The way classes are set up a teacher probably shares the space with a ton of different kids in a day.
Not a job I would like.

 

That made me LOL.

My friend's dad is a teacher and her mother works in the school cafeteria. She had to continue working during the SIP to feed the kids on the lunch program (making about 1,000 per day) and he had to get on board quickly to teach online.

I'm really concerned this will be handled by bureaucrats and the teachers won't be very involved in any planning. I hope that's untrue but I've seen it so many times - the people actually doing the work and know the job are basically following the demands of upper management (who usually have no clue about what happens on the front lines).

I posted in another school thread that my country is only considering 2 options for the fall semester.. a 2 day at school/3 days at home plan and 100% at home... my kid is willing to try the first option, depending on how it shakes out...

If my old Foundations of Education text was right the only reason we have education for children in the first place is because the Child Labor Laws meant we needed someplace to put them while we worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week since we could no longer send them off to the factory at 6 or so.

We don't work that much any more, at least most of us.
