Pre-humanity, the extinction rate was about .1 species per million species per year. Now it is over 100 species per million per year.

I know what you are saying, we are animals, so how can we not be natural? But we have capabilities far beyond any other species on earth, that can be good or destructive, in a much greater proportion than anything else alive.

I guess think of it as other creatures are like the mostly harmless bacteria that covers our bodies, but humans have the potential to be Black Death or Covid. Still part of “nature”, but it can kill the host.

again, I don’t blame Trump. I blame everyone, including myself. We can do better, and we are getting better. Technology is slowly allowing us to become more efficient and less destructive. I think the biggest help would be to encourage more people to get out of their cities and experience and learn about this awesome wild world we have. Hopefully that will encourage more people to want to cherish and protect this beautiful planet.

    Nope nope nope.

Wife HATES them. She sees 1 spider, we call the bug guy back for a free re-treatment and he kills hundreds of other bugs in the process.

1 spider is responsible for hundreds of deaths. He should have gone elsewhere the selfish bastard.

Nothing will save any of us.

As individuals and a species, we are doomed.

    Cope.

I think you mean well, but death/extinction happens.

The best thing to do is accept it.

Nature will kill off thousands of species while humans might abet by adding a few to the list. Nature will also generate thousands of new species. People thinking they are significant or even material in this process is, as I said, the height of arrogance.

    Such ignorance.
Over a century of habitat destruction, pollution, the spread of invasive species, overharvesting, climate change, population growth and other human activities have pushed nature to the brink.

I wish that were the case, and it used to be. But now we are so numerous, consume so many resources, And cause so much pollution and damage that we are a much larger driver of extinction than just pre-human nature. I think the height of arrogance is that we can take so much and waste so much and NOT cause damage.

Right. Why would we put quotas on salmon fishing? So we don’t make salmon go extinct. For example.

I can’t understand this kind of mentality.

we are not part of nature any longer. We are a force that can very disproportionately affect nature.

Am I ignorant because I know humans are responsible for a teeny tiny number of specie extinctions, or are you ignorant because you don't?

Sorry man, you are wrong. If you are talking about since life began, then of course. But, if you are talking about what proportion of extinctions are our fault today, then it is the vast majority that we have caused.

I think that every POTUS, past, present and future, who does not take this issue seriously is responsible. And those who reverse policies on protecting ecosystems are most responsible.

Is that more than average? If not what is the average? How long will it take? Extinction is a natural process. It happens even without help from humans. This piece isn't about extinctions. It is about global warming. so the extinctions could take centuries. I don't like "science" articles with a political agenda.

the united states has been remarkable with protecting and reverse course through conservation. look at the buffalo, gray wolf etc.

you want to see where eco system have been damaged the most? look at N Korea, Cuba, Russia (because of the soviet union) and other left wing regime that do not support private ownership of real estate
