Based on most other countries yes we are free. That is slowly changing though as the congress cedes more power to the executive branch and the federal government continues to overreach.

It's complicate to answer as things as "authoritarian" and "totalitarism" are refering to previous models. I didn't voted so. History is both an eternal renewal and it's not : If the deep human nature and psychology doesn't, which in consequence make a lot of societal mechanism ever existing, culture and more important technology may deeply change. Since internet, a lot of things changed, before internet, the state had almost the monopoly on regulating the speech of people. Now, regulating freedom of speech is largely made by private companies. A capitalist dream. We may interrogate freedom of speech is regulated online. By the way, there is the classic claim that private companies do whatever they want, which is false, a private company can't for instance allow or tolerate call to terrorism or doing illegal things. The role that private companies play today in regulating freedom of speech is unprecedented, and clearly, we lack the intellectual tools to face the whole repercussion of that. Online discussions have this feature to be semi private, they may be private on first hand as they involve only a handfull individuals and may become public then. There is obviously an extreme rise of political tensions. Obviously, if people are afraid of expressing a particular political opinion even moderated, as they could face then unemployement, harrassement or physical threats, there is a loss of freedom.
America is fighting the Totalitarianism of the Left, they also already have monetary socialism via their federal reserve... America however still have far more freedom than many other countries and Trump is dismantling the chains of the radical left, no wonder the Democrats, central bankers & hedgefund managers are panicking... they can feel their grip slipping
I agree 100%. In USA 2020, a slightest joke offensive to the Left is a firing offense. In USSR 1980, many people joked about Communism and Brezhnev. Very few were fired/arrested.
