The British killed our great great great grandfathers and yet we supported them in WWII. We supported them again during WWII against Germany. Now we're aligned with both of them against Russia who has supportedvud through WWI and WWII and has been nothing more than a friendly competitor. Sure NATO "helped" after 911, but we could have fought the Taliban all by ourselves. The only reason we need NATO is so that the rest of the world doesn't say it's an unilateral decision. But we could have done better all by ourselves. NATO alliance doesn't help America. God forbid that Russia or China do try to invade us. How is France, German or the British going to send troops overseas to the US to help? Now the support only works the other way. We send troop to support them. We get nothing in return. Time to withdraw from NATO.
Germany declared war on the US so I suppose you had to fight or be called a big sissy. Did you miss the cold war?!?
So you are saying we should punish people for what their ancestors did? I suppose you are all for reparations, then.
Why do German army officers have British accents in Hollywood movies? It's because Germany lost the war get over it.
Yes. But you gave "their ancestors" as the reason. Which is beyond odd. Yeah.. It's one-sided. They do more to consolidate NATO and keep world piece right now than we do. But I think we should let them kick us out, instead of us kicking ourselves out, because of our incompetence. We'll eventually end Putin's reign over America, and then we can also fulfill our part like they do.
To be fair, your "great, great, great grandfathers" essentially declared war on the British (though not without some good reason) and did plenty of their own killing. A couple of generations later, their descendants were killing each other instead. The US tried very hard to remain neutral in both world wars. They only getting involved militarily in WW1 due to massive public pressure (somewhat manipulated by the British) and being directly attacked by Japan in WW2. They could have very easily remained neutral throughout in both cases had events gone just slightly differently. The involvement of Russia and the USA in WW1 really had nothing to do with each other - both nations had their own aims and motives (like many of the others involved, part of the reason it blew up in to what it did). Russia started WW2 allied with Germany and only switched sides because Germany double-crossed them and from that point were very much fighting for themselves. The Allies (and certainly the USA) never really trusted the USSR and how the mutual distrust influenced the post war period directly led to the Cold War and the treaties which formed the basis of NATO in the first place. You're right that none of us really need NATO any more, certainly not in it's current form. Traditionally the USA has strongly supported it's continued existence though, I suspect because a lot of military spending goes to US companies and the belief it helps maintain US influence in Europe.
Maybe it's because our pretty-faces-empty-skulls U.S. actors cannot handle accents. They are by far the worst it, whereas Brits can handle almost any accent, sounding far more American than Americans can sound British. The same for Brits doing German.
I was assigned to Heidelberg and the Seventh Army in the late 1970s even though I was in the Air Force. The Seventh Army is the US part of the NATO army. I enjoyed working with NATO and found that other national forces were very cooperative and capable. However, the other nations need to pay their part. I receive the daily brief from the Air Force Association. The fighter mission at Spangdahlem AB in Germany is being eliminated. About 15,000 troops will be removed from Spangdahlem AB. Six thousand are to be returned to the US. The rest, including the F-16s will be assigned to Italy.
