You seem to not understand how pandemics work.

If only 30% of the people (maybe even less) fail to take appropriate precautions...the virus spreads.....making all the mitigation efforts nearly useless

I live in NY...and proper mitigation is nearly universal...and we have the virus pretty well under control

Where it keeps popping up are places where a (relatively) small number of people DIDN'T social distance or wear masks...

    I understand.

Agreed. It is definitely more than a few people here and there.

So, what do you attribute to the earlier problems in NY?

It is difficult to know if this is the case because it changes from day to day and even several times within a particular day (ie someone could not wear a mask around family, friends and neighbors, but will if going in public around strangers, etc.). That information just cannot be tracked.

Again...NY has gotten the infections numbers down so that testing and tracing CAN be done.

When infections pop up they are noticed quickly and dealt with...and the situations where multiple people got infected are usually traced to idiotic things like large gatherings where people were not careful.

Isolated cases do pop up but they too usually through testing and tracing are isolated

What happened to the metro area in March is separate from what is happening now

That is wonderful. Maybe it can become a model for other areas where it hasn't been as well contained or is spiking.

Every day a new total number of covid-19 cases. Seems the more we do the more the numbers increase.

I would also like to see them. I've seen many polls, but I don't remember seein any in the last month in which a majority of parents chose to send their children to school in person. And as the start of the school year draws nearer, it seems to me that more parents choose virtual learning. In my county, the deadline for parents to select between in-person, a combination of in-person and virtual attendance (it's the same classroom, but using a webcam) or completely virtual. So at some point in the next week we'll likely see what actual parents who are actually electing how their children will attend, really prefer.

The only one saying anything like that was Trump. Never believe anything that comes out of Trump's mouth.

Fauci didn't change the tune. This is a new virus. Fauci only recommends what is proven by Science. And that has been his only "tune" Throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks is what Trump does. Now what scientists do.

Masks protect others. Face shields an goggles help protect you somewhat, from irresponsible people who refuse to wear masks.

That is incorrect. People are not following the recommendations. And that's why this is getting worse. The "dig-my-heels in types" are enough to keep this going for a long time. And states not implementing them is sure to cause a lot of dead people

I don't know about other states, but it's not a good idea in Florida. Working for me or not is not the issue. The question is if it helps stop the spread of the pandemic. It does not. It makes it worse. And it definitely doesn't work for the teachers who are given no choice.

Fauci did change his tune on the masks. He went from not recommending masks to recommending them. Since then, he has admitted several times that the public health community didn't want people out buying masks because they were needed for front line health care workers.

I have seen this posted several times in the forum and I don't understand how people can accurately say that a percentage of people that refused to wear masks is significant enough to continue the spread of the virus. The ONLY ones that can be counted are the ones that refuse to don a mask for any reason. The others are hit or miss (ranging from sometimes wearing them to strict wearing of them every time they are outside their own home). I'm not suggesting this is not a contributing factor. I just don't know how anybody can say with absolute certainty that it is.

What do you think is not a good idea in Florida? Online or classroom learning?

If you are a child being abused, this Covid lockdown is a nightmare. Child abuse reports way down. Why? Because often it is the school that reports it .

Also sucks if you are one of the millions of undernourished children who used to enjoy that school meal.

Also sucks if you are one of the many children who receive mental health care thru school. Suicides up.

There are more factors to consider in opening schools. It's not as simple as closing keeps our children safe.

There are a lot of arguments against AND for reopening schools.

This has been a genuine hardship on some parents where both parents work. Or single parent homes where the Mom works.

There are also a lot of kids who rely on school for nutritious meals.

There are kids so poor and in such bad living conditions at "home" that school is a break for them; a chance to escape the filth of home, or the sight of Mom drugged out of her mind smoking on the couch, or pimping herself out for drugs.

It's a chance for teachers to keep an eye on kids and note neglect and abuse.

I've read multiple articles discussing the psychological need for children to return to school.

It's also the only hope for most kids to learn, because a lot of parents are just too stupid and/or lazy to teach their kids, and a lot of the rest of the decent parents are at work all day.

Why is it ok for a Walmart clerk or a gas station cashier (or any of the other myriad of "essential" workers) to keep working, but somehow teachers are not safe to return to school? Why can kids go to birthday parties, summer camps, and even Disney World, but they're not safe to return to school?

I have friends who are teachers or school board members. They're kind of divided. Some are worried about the kids and the reality of their home lives and they want them back in school. Some know these kids aren't going to learn a thing at home. Some look at this as a paid vacation. Some are scared of COVID. Some pretend to be scared of COVID because they look at this as a paid vacation. Some are scared of COVID but they think the benefits outweigh the risks. Some are in an at risk category for COVID ---- older, obese, heart problems. It's a mixed bag.

I don't think there is a one size fits all solution.

But I lean towards reopening schools, even in a limited capacity. And it has nothing to do with politics.

The video is saying exactly what I said!

I have no idea what percentage you're talking about, but you only need one person infected who runs around with no mask into crowds (especially in closed spaces) to continue the spread.

That's not exactly true, but... so? Again, do you have a point? What do you mean by "only"? Sounds as if you were to say "ONLY mass murderers kill multiple people"

I have no idea why anybody would have any trouble whatsoever understanding it. If it's "hit or miss" that somebody who goes out without a mask will infect somebody, it's a definite hit if hundreds of people go out without a mask.

You can't get infected via online learning.

Trump's kid is going to a school that is not allowing in school classes. I can see why he is not worried.

The psychological stories that kids need to go to school, yet Barron Trump's school is not doing in-school classes....I guess he will just have to be tortured by staying at home..The whole idea of school is not about learning but about regimen for a long life of work at a low wage to make more money for those wealthy investors who can't live without controlling 99% of the wealth. If a kid or a human can go to school for twelve years and still has a deficit of knowledge there is something wrong.

I wrote the Fauci changed his tune on masks and you said that he didn't change his tune. The video shows him stating that he held back on recommending masks so there would be enough for front line health care professionals.

OK. Let's take 100 people, of which 1 refuses to wear a mask. As you state, it takes ONE maskless person to continue the spread. That person would have to be infected for that to happen, right? Since the virus doesn't live on inanimate objects, that person would have to have been exposed to the virus from another person, right? According to your statement, it couldn't come from the other 99 because they are all wearing masks.

See above. Maskless people are clearly NOT the only ones that continue the spread.

    Again. See above.

True. Your original response was not clear to me.

Fauci "changed his tune" because there was a severe mask shortage for health professionals.

Anti-maskers know this and are simply using this as a rationalization for that which they would be doing and saying anyway

It is not a serious or honest complaint

I'm not an anti-masker. Nor did I mean my comments as a complaint. I was trying to point out that he said one thing and later changed it which called into question (for me) if the face shields and goggles recommendations were stalled as well. I'm just glad that I'm not in charge of trying to reopen schools amid this chaos. It's a nightmare and I'm just a parent in the equation.

So the government and medical professionals misled us instead of doing their jobs which would have been to state: "Yeah masks are effective, but there is not enough right now for frontline workers. So the government is taking steps to acquire these masks for these workers in addition to ramping up production."

And people are to be blamed for not believing a word out of any government agency?

For being dishonest Dr. Fauci lost a huge portion of his bureaucrato/scientifico capital. He had hundreds of millions of people running around without face coverings who believed Fauci and thought it made not one whit of difference, they were okay.

Some of those people can be molded back into the present narrative line like putty, and some of them can't.
