I agree, but what is the legality issue we are dealing with. If you agree to use a product and data is collected, even if it could pose a security risk, what is the standard that we proceed? The Government, even just recently is trying to weigh the issues with Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Twitter and it not completely about them collecting data as users agree to allow it. Its more about their power and influence with talks about breaking them up, not the way they collect data.

If the standard is that if an app/company is giving away something free with the agreement that your data is mined for advertising and predictive models, as all the companies mentioned do domestically, what will be the standard with any foreign based app be in the future? By banning TikTok because they are Chinese and have an US based arm, could not the same be said for any foreign app as a security risk due to their ability to make predictive models with the data they mine?

As far as the legality, that went out the window at least a decade ago. The tech giants were given carte blanche on personal data, i.e., the NSA wire tapping, companies e.g., AT&T and Verizon stated is was their data.

Right and also, this is much like the Chinese social scoring system based off of Big Data. Nothing we can do about yet, especially if you have no access to the fact you are scored and what that score is.

I agree, hence I do my best to limit my exposure, even though this site is prime data for anyone to collect.

Note, never leave your location setting set to on, on your cell phone, it will decrease the span you get.

Ha, that said, Biden of all people is the Dem nominee.

I could make jokes about that but you can just Google Biden smelling.

I'm not leaving the country if he's reelected. I may leave the planet, but Nah.

How will the Republicans ever live this down?

Most Trumpers are tickled pink whenever Trump takes another of their freedoms, the more dictatorial the better.

Same thing with this forum and any other social apps. We are not important enough for China to care about spying on us

I guess you don't live in the United States if you are so indifferent to how Trump tries to strangle free speech over there.

In any case, how about some human compassion? You cannot possibly be on the side of a dictator.

It's a Chinese social media app. It's a Chinese company. The user agreement has some pretty severe copyright rules from what I hear. Basically, everything you post is owned by that Chinese company, which may not sound any worse than some social media apps here, since it's based in China, their are fears that Beijing will be able to just access that info whenever they want.

I can't tell what's up or down anymore, but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over the disappearance of another social media app.

Not at the moment, no, and if they can steal our info here than so be it. That's no reason to make everything easier for them by just signing it over to them.
