I take it then your credo is pretty much 'if it doesn't effect me it doesn't matter?'

AGAIN with the "It's just old people" thing?

150,000 dead (and counting) is kinda "terribly deadly"

That is very much depending on the region. Somewhere like Cairns depends far more on Tourists than somewhere like Broken Hill

We also bill them though if we do not have an agreement in place. Aus has agreements with all sorts of countries - you look after our sick Aussies when they are there we will look after you sick citizens while they are here. Then there are some Pacific islands that we will take critical patients from simply because they have no other treatment options

You don’t “get” Aussies do you?

We were the first country in the world to make seat belts mandatory, to save lives, we were the First Nation in the world to make it mandatory to fence swimming pools to save lives, we brought in gun legislation reform because there had been too many mass shootings (approx one per year) to save lives.

I think it is an essential difference between our two cultures

oh! And BTW a fair proportion of those getting sock are HEALTHCARE WORKERS

    do THEY deserve to die?

I for one would willingly donate socks to our healthcare professionals if they needed them.

Because that's exactly the kind of dyslexic idiot I am.

Nope, didn't say that. My "credo" is that the global economic pain will cause far more damage to peoples' lives than a virus which is not terribly deadly.

Not even close to the worst. I once typed I don't get 'fats'... instead of 'facts'.

'The 'pain' can be short and sharp - with a quick recovery afterwards exactly because everyone does the right thing from day one or the economic pain can be prolonged, and more severe as a result because they don't. Australia has gone with plan (A). The US has gone with plan (B). I say 'gone' but a more accurate discretion would be 'fallen into'.

Not withstanding the scale differences in the size of our economies we'll see who weathers the economic storm better (on a per capita basis) in the next 2 years or so.

No one "deserves" to die. It is a pandemic though, so some people will die, just to state the obvious. Health care workers are at highest risk, after older people with multiple health conditions. I've looked at the high # of health care worker infections here. Most of them survive the infection.

We can do what needs to be done to minimise the deaths though

and “most survive the infection” is pretty ****ing cold

It suggests that those who did die were somehow at fault. And it also diminishes the impact on those who have become critically ill.

Here are some healthcare workers from the UK and around the world who have died

At least two thirds of them are very obviously overweight or obese. That that fact is being ignored by Govts around the world, is borderline criminal.

Added to the people obviously over 60, and you have a much more honest picture. Any fit and healthy - not overweight - younger people in this lineup possibly died earlier in the pandemic, when healthcare workers were subjected to immense viral loads. They could also have been immune compromised via very long hours or other lifestyle factors.

    Similar to :flagcanada:
    Australia is UnFree.
A deep feeling difference from :flagus:, esp. Texans
when FREEDOM is given, and not won in a proper revolution.
The UnFree don't feel their governments abuses to their liberties

    Hope that helps

China is 'openly Communist' the same way most politicians are 'openly' in favour of lower taxes ie only when making statements for public consumption. Their economic system no more meets the definition of 'communist' than the US does. Not even close. Big Fella's description of them as fascist is way closer to the mark.

They were communist at the times you refer to but that is history, the leopard started changing its spots 30 years or more ago.

    Up is down in Australia.

Victorians are attempting to escape and terrorize NSW and QLD with biological weapons.

    Victorianism must be stamped out.

Thank goodness Victorians are really Tasmanians with one of the heads cut off. That could be why the stump jump plow was invented as the shining example of Australian technology.

I’ll believe you are “free” , the day income tax is optional and draft into the army is optional.
    Your freedom is a delusion.

Hate to break the news to you but the rest of the world doesn't really give a flying 'f***k' about what 'Texas' thinks. Individual Texans, yes. Your imagined view of Texas i.e. a State where apparently everyone is in lockstep with what you believe is true - no.

    It's not Victorianism, it's Melbournism.

    Country Victorians are normal ;)
