In honestly, what happened was that Iran and Iraq stalemated each other for a decade. One would make an advance, then get pushed back and their enemy would move forward, then it would be repeated. Over and over again, for a decade.

But the funny thing is, the exact same military that Iran struggles to achieve a stalemate with for a decade, the US and it's allies thoroughly destroyed not once, but twice. And both times in a matter of days.

But somehow Iran would be different. Because... who knows? Allah, I guess? Although that did Iraq no good at all. Nor the Taliban, which are still little more than bandits almost 2 decades after they were crushed out of power.

Iran's only advantage over Iraq is that they are much larger in both geography and population.

True, but did them little good in their decade long war with Iraq.

I still laugh when I read how Iraq supposedly started the war, when it was the lunatic homicidal maniac Ayatollah Khomeini who ranted for a 'religious war' to export his degenerate 'revolution' and began shelling Iraqi border posts after calling for Shi'ites to overthrow Saddam. The Iraqi invasion was merely self-defense; no plans were ever made by Saddam to take over Iran, which would have been tough for a country with only 20 million versus a country with 60 million. So yes, I consider it a loss for the Iranians as the aggressors seeking takeover and failing miserably.

Actually, Iraq did start the war. They saw Iran at the time as weak and in chaos, because of both the revolution, and because of the purge of over 12,000 officers from the Iranian military. By the time that was done, there were damned few who held a rank higher than Captain. They had former Company Commanders now leading Divisions, simply because they were "Doctrinally Sound".

Iran was no more ready to attack than Stalin was prepared to attack Germany in WWII.

The Shatt al-Arab Waterway had long been a point of contention between the two nations, with many border clashes. The most recent in 1974-1975, and Iraq was defeated. This resulted in the 1975 Algiers Agreement, where Iraq renounced all claims to the waterway, and a border was established between the two nations.

On 17 September 1980 Iraq withdrew from the Algiers Protocol, stating that they refused to honor them anymore, and reasserted their previous claims to the area. Then on 22 September they attacked. You may not like it, but these are the facts. And there was not even a faked up casus belli like Poland, Iraq simply withdrew from the 1975 agreement and attacked.

And Iraq did not even want to take over Iran. They had enough problems with their Shia population as it was, all they wanted was the waterway.

Iran shelled Iraqi border installations on Sept. 4. The invasion was only an escalation, not the start of the war. You may not like it, but just because the Mullahs were morons and weren't really ready to fight a war they started doesn't mean they were innocents.

    Contemporary evidence to support that?

You see, here is the amazing thing about the Internet. While Iraq later claimed they were attacked on 4 September, for some strange reason, they kept that a secret from the entire world. I just looked at several newspapers for that day through archives, and not a single one on 5 or 6 September say a single word about such an attack. They also never listed that as a justification for pulling out of the Algiers Protocol.

Almost as if it never happened, and Iraq only said that later.

That just tells me no western media cared about Iraq before they launched their defensive attacks, no media around to report on it.

    *laughs*

In 1980, when the entire freaking world had been watching Iran for almost a year? Just a few months after the failed attempt to rescue the hostages? They for no apparent reason went t war with Iraq?

And that is your claim? Get to the Conspiracy Theory area with that nonsense. "Nobody cared" indeed. The Ayatollah at that time could barely fart without the world knowing about it the next day.

Lots of news doesn't get reported, for the simple reason no major international media was around, or it got buried under more important news. The border clashes with Iran were old news for a couple of years, i.e. boring and not worth keeping anybody there to report on it.

We realize you're old and like most lifers probably an alcoholic as well, so naturally you can't really handle disagreements well.
