Does a US President have to be a Christian?

Could it be that the reason the U.S. Christian religion has so much influence over political elections is because it is a religion based on emotions?

 

Religion is emotional in that it speaks absolute truth and is by definition intolerant of other points of view. But states built on the soviet model are even more intolerant of unorthodox thought even though they claim to be empirically based. I freely admit I have no good answers but to allow each society to balance faith with public policy. It’s murky and ugly.

 

Of course not. The only reason Barack Obama ever went to church was -- in his own words -- to establish 'street cred' for political reasons. In other words all thinking people KNEW that he was in no way, shape, or form really a Christian; and it didn't matter.

 

Obama’s pastor was a fierce anti semite and I will give Hilary credit for the courage to point this out while Obama refused to repudiate him.

 

Yes, but that was not the question posed. I have never met a Christian that actually lives their faith so I was neither shocked or pleasantly surprised that he did that. Quite frankly, I don't understand why the general public believes anything a politician does or says.

 

I can't think of any other moral code I'd want a leader to follow.

To me it is the only one that makes any sense but it is passive and politics requires aggression.

 

One of the unintended impacts of Trump's presidency, is that this notion of equating religious identity with the moral authority to lead this country is dead, dead, dead. Trump professed to a faith to get elected that he has not followed. He actually is completely ignorant of the faith he claims. He is not the first fraud to exploit the Christian faith to get elected, but he actually flouts it in both his personal and professional life.

His example will make religious identity close to irrelevant in a lot of the country . I think the public would be more likely to vote for an agnostic or atheist who has the moral core that Trump clearly lacks.

Its still going to matter in the bible belt though, especially in the republican primary.

 

And Obama claimed allegiance to a very enthusiastic anti Semite pastor.

I ignore any profession of religion in Presidential campaigns.

United States Civics 101 - there shall be no religious test as explictly stated in the CONSTITUTION, Article VI.........“no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” ...................end of discussion.

 

Besides, we have already had a muslim President.

 

But so much better than that so called religion islam.

 

Why any better? Any religion that allows or somehow leads to violence...can be no better than another that does the exact same thing.
Why not take a look at our own So called Christian religion here...are U.S. Christians against wars and violence and needless killing?
Or do they go along with it and still claim to be followers of Christ?

But imo Washington and Jefferson were honest Deists, and Adams was a Christian.

In my opinion..... (and my opinion is often incorrect)...... but it is a fairly educated opinion..... I believe that there is considerable truth to the rumour that the CIA is divided between those who want to cooperate with drug dealers and human traffickers..... and the CIA and NSA members who want to put the drug dealers and human traffickers into Guantanamo and let them rot.

And they agreed along with most of the founding fathers after having read and witnessed the influence of religious establishments in Europe in the governments and over the people that the very powerful power of religious establishments should be kept separate for the very powerful power of government because when you combine the two you get oppression and suppression and violations of individual rights. The only times religion is mentioned in the Constitution is to restrict or ban its influence over the government.

I will defend your constitutional right to practice your religion to believe your religion as you see fit to the end, but keep your religion out of our government.
