ROFLMAO no he is trying to bribe people with payoffs to get their vote it's no some higher ground effort to claim the law is ridiculous which it is not. Do you believe one person should be able to give someone else something of value in an attempt to sway their vote?

They can vote when they meet the stipulations for the felony crimes they committed. Why should people who have not done so be allowed to vote?

Florida has made it impossible for these people to know how much they owe, and how to get it paid. Very few who have tried, have been successful.

Our legislature has done this before. They don't care what we want. They do what they want, despite their obligation to follow the constitutional amendments we vote for.

    It's dirty tricks.

When this non-profit pays off these fees and restitutions, they better get some receipts and payoff notices from somebody... No offense, but your state sounds stuck in the 40's...... the 1840's...

Carpetbagger Mike Bloomberg.... has a nice ring to it... although I hope everybody posting on this topic knows Bloomberg isn't personally contributing to the fund himself... just fundraising for it.. he also reportedly has no say over to whom and how the funds are used...

Florida is split. We have the South Georgia part of the state, Orlando area, and New York. (edit to add Little Cuba.)

The further south you go, the more north you get. That should be the state slogan.

There have been discussions to create a N/S Florida, but Orlando is a battleground.

I've lived all over Florida. Where I am now, suits my lifestyle.

I meant your state legislature more than the actual people.... Most states have divisions... My state of Virginia has several pockets of normalcy, which now generally outnumber the larger conservative pockets in population..

They can petition the court or simply call the clerk of court, they were there when the judge sentenced them and told them what is the fine. Again why should people who have committed serious felonies and have not satisfied the legal sanctions placed on them vote?

By the same token, why shouldn't many of these people, who are unable to pay possibly due to their time in prison, be able to accept the gifts of a forgiving public fundraising drive to regain a right many states restore automatically upon release??

FL is the only state where has to go north to find a southern accent :)

FL has certainly grown and does have its sections of demographics.

Sigh. You don't understand. In many of these cases, they were not told of the fines. They received no information, no letters, no amounts, no anything. Legislature is making it incredibly difficult and confusing. This is intentional. It's dirty tricks.

No matter what we voted for, rapists and murderers are excluded, and will never have these rights restored.

The people who have paid their debt, without knowing there was further debt, and not being able to find out the where/why/how of the debt, are in a vacuum. Raising money to help them is not a bad thing, IMO.

Didn't Bloomberg donate the money to an organization which paid the fines with no strings attached????

I’d be surprised if he didn’t vet this before. But I was also surprised about his presidential bid and failure over attacks we all expected.

Do you believe that the republicans are taking their right away since they served their time ?

Why should they not have their rights restored ?

So you do support a poll tax then right ?

Guess the “constitution” is only for republican ideals........

No, I believe one person should be allowed to raise funds to be donated in an attempt to ALLOW their vote..

To be honest, I didn't have a real problem with the Florida law requiring payback of KNOWN fees and restitutions... Florida wouldn't be the only state with that in place.

The reports are clear that many people didn't know how much they owe and were unable to find out easily, so if an organization can come in and find that out, then raise funds to get these (mostly) piddling amounts paid off to restore a basic human right, only the truly fearful would oppose that...

Speaking of fearful, it's early, but my favorite line of the day is from Lil' Lindsey...

    SNIP
An angry Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) complained that he’s “getting killed” financially in his reelection bid, complaining about money his challenger is raising from people who “hate my guts.”

    Yeah Lindsey..... And your point??

Yeah, I love how Lindsey is now complaining about a system he helped put in place. Irony is dead for him ;)

Florida charges inmates $50 per day for their stay in prison. But in the ultimate Irony, they make them work, but Florida law says they don’t have to pay them anything. And the weird part is that, requiring payment of the fines is subjective, and not mandatory/required. I think that that is why this is such a big deal.

To be clear, I have no problem making prisoner cover some of the costs. But where I draw the line is that they loose their right to vote over fines. That is the textbook definition of a poll tax right ?

Not to derail, but poor little Lindsey. He's just playing monkey-see monkey-do with Trump, and I'm seeing it differently than him. It's not his guts they're hating. They're using his words against him, just like he asked.

Here's a hint Lindsey. If you're gonna lie, you need to lie like Trump. Say a bunch of unintelligible crap, using a vocabulary of 8 words, 4 of which are superlatives, over and over, changing only the order in which you say them. Then leave. MAGA. People won't be able to use your words against you so easily.

Fully agree... Lindsey's words about Garland and a SCOTUS opening in 2020 couldn't have been any more clear if they were spray painted on a window... And much of what the MSM calls "Trump lies" are just an inability/unwillingness to decipher his gibberish (However, he does lie like a rug as well)....

I'm on the record on several threads on PF.com over the years that I generally considered Lindsey one of the better GOP Senate members for a long time, but he swung completely off the reservation starting with O'Kavanaugh and ending with Impeachment. Now, there are few GOP I want to remove faster than him...

My wife, who I generally considered to be essentially apolitical until 2019, has been actively rooting for Jamie Harrison to win...

I used to like Lindsey Graham. He was one of my favorite Senators. I swear some of these formerly old-school Republicans have become like addicts who will do anything for a fix. It's quite mind-boggling.

I'm asking about what Bloomberg has done not something else. He is offering something of value in order to get someone to vote. You do agree he should be investigated at the least and faces charges don't you?

Because they have not fulfilled the terms of the legal sanctions applied to them as a consequence of the crime they committed against out society. Why should they? And stop with the canard that it is a tax, it is a fine for a criminal act for which they were found guilty. Are you also in opposition to laws which deny the 2nd Amendment right to felons?
