@Moriah, I think this is an important subject from an ethics standpoint. I don’t mean to minimize that aspect. I just think in this case any inconsistency of belief is manufactured. Based on my analogy of murder victim organ/tissue donation I don’t see a logical reason for those that believe abortion is murder to oppose fetal cell lines. I certainly see no reason for those that believe abortion is not taking life to oppose it.

In this particular case of Regeneron monoclonal antibodies there are other ethical issues involved, mainly genetic engineering and animal welfare. If one takes the position individuals should refuse treatments for ethical components of a treatment development, then from a logical perspective these two factors are more debatable than the fetal cell line perspective.

If a person operating from a purely humanistic perspective that believes animals should not be used in the lab were to take these antibodies, I would not criticize them for doing so. Neither would I criticize someone who rails against GMO’s for receiving the treatment. As I said in the other thread, this treatment should unite us, not divide us.

As always, thanks for the conversation. If you have further thoughts on any of the ethical components of this treatment I’d love to hear them.

I wonder how Amy Coney Barrett would feel about this use of fetal stem cells? She is very much against abortion.

@557, that little pig in your avatar appears to have a strange looking snout. Is he OK?:confusion:

Democrats have stripped her of that right where they have the power to do so.

Good question. Just guessing but probably similar to me. I would not support facilitating abortion for the sole purpose of research and I’m opposed to incentivizing abortion monetarily but respect the law and precedent.

I haven’t watched any hearings so you probably know more about her position than I.

It’s hard to see in such a small picture but he’s squealing so his mouth is open. Also, it’s a Kune Kune so their snouts are a little different anyway.

Since you are observant and notice things like avatars I’ll ask your opinion. I’m torn between changing it often to represent my interesting life or leaving it more permanent for easier visual identification of 557. A couple months ago I changed it daily, using 24 hour incremental time lapse photos of baby robins from egg to flight but I don’t think anyone caught on. :) What’s your opinion? Leave it or change for variety?

I haven't been watching her hearing. But I hear she is a strict Catholic, and I know they are against abortion under any circumstances.
If Trump had the same beliefs about abortion that you have, he wouldn't look like such a hypocrite.

Leave it. It's a cute picture. :) Is he a pet or will he one day become bacon and pork chops for you?
When I took biology in college, we had to dissect a fetal pig. Did you know their internal organs are almost exactly like a human beings?

Thanks for asking. Los Angeles is an example. No CCWs are issued to ordinary citizens. Only law enforcement, judges, politicians, and criminals carry guns here.

OK. So, if my son who lives in the central valley of California, travels to Los Angeles, will he have to leave his gun at home? He has a CCW.

He would have unload it and lock it up to legally transport it through LA. Funny thing about gun laws, if I walked out of my home with a firearm, I immediately become a felon, but if someone broke in and stole my gun, it was a misdemeanor.

I’d be surprised if Trump has a solid belief on abortion. He’s used the issue to court voters, which is fine, Biden has moved farther to the pro abortion side to court voters as well.

I think the whole pro life movement that wants to overturn RvW etc. is based on a flawed foundation. To demonstrate I’ll go back to analogy. This time I’ll use drugs. At one time we thought making harmful substances illegal was the answer to the damage done by them to individuals and society. It didn’t work. The only way to curb usage is to help the individual lose their desire (need) to be high. I believe limiting abortion requires the same attitude shift in the consumer. Illegality doesn’t solve the problem. Only elimination of the desire to have an abortion will be effective.

Good point. Abortions laws are unenforceable and failed long before the internet and abortion drugs. Those with money would just create a demand for medical tourism. We have drug and gun laws and everyone who wants a gun or drugs gets it with no trouble.

I very rarely eat anything with a face so I won’t be turning him into bacon. He will be sold to someone who will grow him out and eat him. We sell some to a family operation that pasture raised pork, beef, and lamb for local local farmer’s market sales. These are a pasture breed so mature out 1/2 to 1/3 the weight of a commercial hog.
I grew up with a wide variety of animals, but pigs weren’t one of them. We’ve only had pigs for a few years so I’m still learning. Especially about behavior and low stress (for me LOL) handling. I did get some education on hog anatomy and physiology in college but translating academic knowledge to farm realities is a challenge without previous experience. Good observation on your part, it is amazing how similar humans and hogs are. Most farm animals (mammals) are herbivores and either ruminants or cecal digesters whereas the pig and human are simple monogastric and omnivorous. I’ve heard humans referred to as “long pig” based on similar muscular structure and even (ack) flavor!

How did you like dissecting a pig? I found anything in formaldehyde disgusting but don’t mind cutting on live or recently deceased stuff.

Dissecting the pig was very educational. It was probably the most interesting thing I did in that class.
You say you don't eat anything with a face. Are you a vegetarian?

Yes. Specifically a lacto-ovo vegetarian for the most part.

Only to those who follow them. Back on topic, politicians have strong feelings about how you should live while enjoying the luxury of being exempt.
