    This is timely...

Justice ready to charge Google with monopoly search practices

Insiders expect the Justice Department to charge Google with violating antitrust laws this week, in what would be the biggest such action against a U.S. tech company in two decades. But questions still swirl around how broad and tight Justice's case will be.

Big if true. Of course, people on the right have noticed widely divergent search results from Google compared to Bing, Duck Duck Go, or other search engines. Hopefully we get an inside look at Google's search algorithms.

It is hard to argue that Google does not rival if not wildly surpass the federal government with regards to control of information. To allow a few UNACCOUNTABLE billionaires to control the GLOBAL information market is not acceptable when it can be demonstrated that they have a political bias.

The political bias is ridiculously easy to prove. When I do a search of straight white couple on google, I get this:
    upload_2020-10-17_9-14-4.png

Five years ago, the search results would have been all images of straight white couples. This is google trying to change reality.

Even a cursory examination shows why those results come up. The headlines contain "straight", "white", and "couple". Do you really think Google has an AI to look at images to see if the picture contains a white guy and girl?

I get the same thing on Bing, which I use almost exclusively, which kinda proves Google doesn't have a monopoly on search engines.

You do understand that busting monopolies is one of the few roles a government has in capitalism right?

That aside, what does any of this have to do with antitrust law?

How is Google a monopoly? There is literally active competition and no prohibition for new ones.

Simply because Google is killing it doesn't mean they are violating the law.

Actually, tech companies had such technology for a while now.
I remember playing around with it a few years ago with Microsoft’s AI. You upload an image and it tells you what it sees.
Pretty cool, from technical perspective, but scary if used by a monopolistic search engine.

Same argument used to be made in support of Microsoft with its Internet Explorer.
Most users are lazy. If a device comes in preconfigured to use google’s chrome, their search engine and have their website as default - you have the same scenario in which Microsoft had its behind handed to it 20 years ago.
Since there is already a legal precedent on the books, it wouldn’t be difficult to convict Google based on conviction against Microsoft.

Google's explained in the past that it can only go by the words posted with the picture, and that when people in the pics are white, people are far less likely to use a race descriptor than if they were black, hispanic, etc. Words like "straight" or "couple", however, get used across the board.

So when you search for "straight white couple", there'll be plenty of pics with the words "straight" and "couple" but not so many specific to "white".

    This is long overdue.
I’ve been switching my devices away from Google and their chrome.

So it's tied to the purchase of new devices? If that's the case, Google will just have to include a copy of Bing (for example) pre-installed on the device. IIRC, that's what happened with Microsoft. They were ordered to include a copy of Netscape Navigator on new devices.

If you don't like Google, use a different search engine. Pretty simple. The GOP has lectured us that the free market will solve everything. So if people use a different search engine, Google will be forced to change their algorithm if indeed this is what they are doing. No need for big government to step in.

A fair assessment, tho it would seem Democrats' interest in protecting speech and the free flow of information was merely a myth as well.

Both sides of the aisle seem to like corporate monopolies that go along with their world view... until it doesnt. Then cry 'govt save us!'

Meh, once the liberals get in and Barr is fired, Google, Facebook and Twitter will turn all conservatives into homo-lesbo-bi-pedo-minorities by tweaking their search algorithm and filtering content.

    MWUAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH !

Microsoft was also forced to open its code for everyone to see how the OS interacts with the browser. Google must do the same to prove that android devices are not subject to protocols executable only between those two pieces of software.

Funny how this whole idea of an "open internet and free speech" is an issue considering the Trump administration repealed net neutrality years ago.

    Totally, fmj...

Biden's candidacy is all part of the grand conspiracy by Liberals, The DNC, and the Illuminati to control free speech.

    Major stuff.

Time to wake up granny and the kids and restock the fallout shelter.

Seems like an easy fix, if this is indeed the case.
