Trump was never really effective as a politician, because he didn't know the #1 rule of politics is to distinguish yourself from your opponent. He needed to continue harping on Joe Biden's 47 years, his voting record and the things that progressives didn't like.

If he had done that, he wouldn't have had to call him sleepy Joe or focused on his understandable health issues at 78 years old. And unlike a Kennedy, it's not like he was young either.

Distinguishing himself from Biden, especially on civil rights was easily manageable. If they tried the cages, he could've once and for all pointed out on national television that it was their policy, not his. Why should he not use existing law, as the lawful commander in chief?

When the Left says he "played" to his base, not really. That was just your interpretation because you hated him so. He actually tried to play to his opponent's weaknesses not his base. If he wanted to play to his base, he would've advertised a lot more the things that got done.

The unfortunate thing is that Biden wasn't a part of Congress. Traditionally, a party member has taken(or not taken) tough votes that are hard to explain to the public. But Trump could've made it a mandate on the Democratic leadership by making Nancy Pelosi's incompetence front and center. If Trump had done that, if he advertised his willingness to negotiate during one of the debates or even during his rallies, he would've put a lot of pressure on Biden to either agree or on Pelosi to change her tactics.

A lot of politics is subtly, but Trump is an overt personality. He doesn't know how to be subtle, how to be the person who can dig at someone without it being too nasty or personal and being able to be fingered for it. That's not Trump, and that's a big reason why he lost.

He knew how to throw his weight around, but he didn't know how to play the political game, at least not that way. Pointing out Biden "being in the basement" wasn't effective because the pandemic was excuse #1. All that did was highlight his supposed "preparedness"(by copying off the Trump plan, which is hilarious.)

On the other hand, all he had to do(and a little of what he was doing with Leslie Stehl) is "Hey, I'm here taking these one sided slanted questions, where's Biden?" He should've been taking that approach, MUCH, MUCH earlier. Like four or five months earlier.

Biden's unwillingness to answer key questions is why they voted on the down ticket the way that they did. If that unwillingness to be accountable had been brought up, voters would've thought "Hey, if we think Trump's unaccountable, what does that say about a man who won't answer tough questions?"

There was a path to Trump getting more votes. He needed to show that he was more accountable than Joe was, he was more trustworthy than Joe. For example, he could've easily said. "Hey, I haven't hidden any of my agenda from you guys. you can feel free to vote it out but the plan to continue growing the African-American/Latino communities, the plan to get us a robust health care reform. All of that is on the table and we're prepared to move. I don't know about my opponent on the other hand and neither does anybody else."

"And this thing about my taxes? You're all getting these leaks, illegally. I could easily have a cease and desist with the New York Times but I didn't. So when it comes to accountability, I'm willing to have my information illegally leaked."

Things like that, subtle ways Trump could've turned the narrative around. But Trump's not a subtle guy, and that's the #1 reason he lost the election. Not campaigning to his strengths(and therefore he was not campaigning to his base. That was your calling cry, not the facts of the actual campaign.). Instead, he spent too much time attacking the other candidate.

That worked with Hillary Clinton, it wouldn't work with Joe Biden. He needed to make himself stronger, instead of trying to make Joe weaker. Some might say that just proves Trump's a bully, and that bullies are actually smaller than real men. If so, Trump definitely proved that true by losing a very winnable campaign.

Donald Trump lost the election because he refused in any way to expand beyond his base. He was unwilling to treat those not in his base in a civil manner and unwilling to listen, let alone compromise. He made the election about him not about issues.
