amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/11 For 3/4s of a century VOA has provided news and other services to over a hundred countries in dozens of languages. It's original mandate, tell no lies, allowed it to maintain a listener confidence rating of over 80%, with only the BBC with ratings that high. Yes, it included reports that showed the good along with the bad. While it didn't go out of its way to make the US look bad it didn't ignor the warts. Until. In June Trump named a new head to clean house of those that didn't speak of him in the best terms. Many fired and the entire editorial board resigned in protest. Now the courts have stepped in and maybe they can start to regain the world's trust again.
I almost don't see how it's possible for a government-run media to truly maintain precise neutrality. You would have to get leaders of the organization who were truly honest, had integrity, and actually genuinely tried to keep neutrality. And this would not always be an easy thing to verify or measure. Giving independent journalists freedom is not exactly neutrality either, since we know the majority of journalists in a group could have their own biases. And how would we make sure there was no bias taking place during the hiring process? Not really so easy to do.
trump has instilled loyalists in every level of government. I am just thankful that he was stopped after 4 years, 8 years and we would have been unrecognizable as what we say we stand for. This will take generations and will likely never happen.
As I said, VOA, like the Peace Corps, have remained fiercely independent of the State dept. and price themselves on their nuetrality. Global polls show them to be over 80% trusted and hopefully this damage can be overcome
were lucky Trump is as old as he is, had he been younger, he may have been able to pull off a dictatorship due to his Trumpairian following
It's always buyer beware. If any given bias is in favor of truth and objectivity in reporting, I happily accept that agenda. Otherwise, buyer beware.
Ever since he was inaugurated Trump has thought that he could rule the United States like the tin horn dictator of a third world country. New he looks forward to a Supreme Court decision that the thinks will keep him in power for another four years. After all the Court has a six to three Republican majority. Three of the justices were appointed by him. They owe him a favor, right? What could go wrong? So thinks the pathetic little man in the White House.
