Priests, rabbis, and ministers are criticized all the time. And those that criticize are themselves chastised. The police don’t get involved because we live in a free society. Should we start throwing people in jail for their opinions? Should we start burning books? Should a few rich guys demonetize those they disagree with?

    https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politi...b-monty-python-joke-incites-violence-n1072750

If someone is obnoxious we can ignore him or respond in kind. Do you really want the police to get involved? I thought leftists wanted to defund the police. Lol

Should we fire people for their religious beliefs or their non-religious beliefs? Should we fire people for their political opinions?

I guess you are unaware of what company policy means?
And the results if one doesn't follow company policy? Heaven forfend????

And are you aware, disagreeing with the boss is NOT going against company policy. Unless of course, it's written into the policy. But I've never seen that.

    I agree with 90~ish %.

I think picking on religion is fair game. You can see a priest on the street and chastise him for living a lie. It's not illegal, but it is a dick move. If you pull that kind of crap on company time, you may, indeed, get fired.

I know of someone who was fired for being a bully at work. He'd call the men who he perceived as weak, girly names AKA Look at Cindy over there. Isn't she adorable? Now you are disrupting the workplace, and your boss has every right to fire you.

I'm not talking mistakes here, or genuine misunderstandings and/or learning curve. I'm talking straight up bullying.

Should we fire people if they are deliberately rude about a co-worker's religious beliefs and continue being so after being repeatedly asked to stop?

You've pointed out twice in this thread how this won't affect your life personally. If you are now only discussing this on PF that affect your life personally, I'd assume that eliminated much discussion for you.

Yes. Creating a hostile work environment is a legit reason to fire someone. They need to go through the formal process of verbal, then written warnings, and possibly a PIP. After that? Continued negative behavior will win in an unemployment case.

Does anyone think bureaucrats and plutocrats should be able to burn books and otherwise smother free speech?

I love how Wikipedia just changed all the pronouns in their profile from "she/her" to "he/his," while also asking for donations to perpetuate that BS.

Yeah, this is pretty close to my take on the whole pronoun thing in general. I have no problem with attempting to learn to address a limited number of people by pronouns which are possibly incongruous with his or her or their general appearance and behavior.

I reckon on second thought maybe they/their would just be best to universally replace he she / his her, if it really needs to go that far. This would also solve one of my grammatical nemeses, aka the infamous someone followed by they, as in,

currently incorrect: "If someone wants to be called a he rather than she then they are certainly free to do so."

currently correct: "If someone wants to be called a he rather than she then she, or rather the new he, is certainly free to do so."

hmmm, maybe I'll just start trying this out in fact....

    ***
The gender versus sex nomenclature and usage is a bit of a hassle that apparently was just more or less invented by a Sexologist named John Money in 1955.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_and_gender_distinction

So, one's sex is apparently the biological part of things versus one's gender which represents either one's role or identity.

If Ellen became Elliot in the forest by his or her or their-self would anyone even know?

It's kinda silly I think to theorize about such concepts independently of one's interactions with others, i.e. one's role.

    ***
Again though, my intent was to discuss this Orwellian screed from glaad.org

Apologies to Elliot Page for using him as the case-in-point for some of the issues I have with Glaad's presumptuous "tip sheet for journalists".

Elliot may be down with all of these, I don't know.

I have similar questions for any public figure making such an announcement, as well as private announcements among friends and family I question these "tips"

Ah, note the fine grammatical usage required by the folks at Glaad! Kudos to you! No worries on the "transsexual" and "transvestite" cautionary admonishments, even I know that these terms apply only to RuPaul and Tim Curry.

    Why Elliot then?
Shouldn't Ellen have gone with Ell?
    Or maybe Pat?
Wait, didn't she announce that her new pronoun was he or they?
Essentially rejecting being a she? Being a woman?

Or perhaps there are things we can only imagine going on?

    They're the Kwisatz Haderach?

When will they be changing the water of life?

Indeed, as long as we're at it, what is Elliot's sexual orientation? What's his preferred strapon? Shouldn't these aspects of his sexuality be presented in the name of trans-parency and full disclosure? What are his plans for going full Chaz Bono? Is he going to back it up? How much of this is simply seeking publicity? It's pretty common knowledge already that the former she was a lesbian.

Help us out here. Does going T supersede L? Is he now the equivalent, more or less, of a straight cis male?

Nice. Wikipedia is already ON IT!

    upload_2020-12-2_19-41-32.png

This tip is pretty amazing to me. It seems to incite journalists to become complicit in trans-forming historical facts for the sake of what? Trans "authentic" identities are too fragile to fully acknowledge all of the life they've lived? Their previous gender identities are to never be spoken of? Pffffttt!

Is this Page's opinion as well?

I'm really curious about this one - does or will Page be offended if a journalist refers to her 33 initial years of life and success as having been accomplished as a woman?

How should women feel about this type of cancel culture?

No, you don't get to state this. Maybe Chaz Bono says he'll wait and see what kinda commitment Elliot has, for example.

I don't think Ellen is trans. She's a Lesbian Top, and it seems most likely to me that she's gaming the system with this Elliot stuff. We'll see. Will he accept roles requiring he play a she?

Whatever. Good For You Glaad. Gender bending has been around long before anyone needed you to tell journalists how to write about it, and it's been far less fragile than any justification, including fallacious appeals to trans violence as a motive, for these tips.

I had an uncle who thought he was a chicken. We were going to tell him that was silly but we needed the eggs

The TV show Billions has a main character who is non-binary. Asia Kate Dillon plays Taylor Mason. She's attractive whatever she is

The proper way to bring up the original sex is to say "Assigned male/female at birth". That conveys accurate info but is totally non-judgmental

It eliminates 99% of the people here and in life from discussion.
As it affects next to no one in general everyday life.

Is your life affected? Are you eliminated from discussing?

I think some religious people insist that persecution of those who they disagree with religiously is their religious right. It's not.

Typically the HR dept. But upper management, CEO, CFO, types set the policies. Perhaps even the Board of Directors.

The boss on a production line, not so much.

it was more than that, you don't get fired for just not using pronouns, I think we all know that

I do not think I have used a pronoun when addressing someone ever, never a issue, now were these people specifically using pronouns to mock these people... probably

if true we would all be in trouble, heck, I have trouble speaking some of the India names where I work, but they deal with it and work with me, they even often create nicknames for themselves to make it easier on us

The danger to free speech now comes from the left. The elite have a stranglehold on education, entertainment, and news.

One way to support free speech is to support educational choice.

It’s the trans-activists who want to ban Rowling now!
