“Calls for martial law and US military oversight of new presidential election draws criticism”

“The idea that the U.S. military would oversee a new nationwide presidential election — ordered under martial law by President Donald Trump — is “insane in a year that we didn’t think could get anymore insane,” a defense official tells Military Times.”

“Yet retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn promoted that exact idea Tuesday evening when he tweeted a press release from an Ohio-based conservative political organization.”

“Calling former Vice President Joe Biden’s Nov. 3 victory over Trump “fraudulent,” the Ohio-based “We The People Convention” took out a full-page ad in the Washington Times on Tuesday urging Trump to “immediately declare Martial Law, and temporarily suspend the Constitution and civilian control of these federal elections, for the sole purpose of having the military oversee a re-vote.”

    https://www.militarytimes.com/news/y...aws-criticism/

If I am not mistaken, don’t all military personnel, including Generals, take an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution?

Flynn is a Complete Whackjob, and Everybody Knows That.

Obviously, there is ZERO Chance of Martial Law. None.

He should have a star removed for that statement.

Not sure but he may have already given up his commission when he retired. Not sure if it is different for a general.

Isn't the argument from the right that the constitution has been subverted due to election fraud?

Granted, I'm with Andrew (weird, I know!) that there is zero chance of martial law. Eventually, Trump will exit the White House and Biden will become the 46th president of the United States. Trump will then work to make sure there will be an asterisk by his name.

    Yeah.

I keep forgetting that he was retired.

In certain situations, Retired Military Personnel can be retroactively retired to a lower rank, but in practice it is rare and may involve just dropping down just one grade.

    https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Dis...vely-retired-to-major-general-following-find/

Flynn could also have lost his retirement under certain circumstances:

If a veteran commits treason, mutiny, or sabotage, or assists an enemy of the United States, he forfeits his right to veterans benefits

But, with the pardon, he seems in the clear.

I guess at this point, he can support any Looney Toon that he wants to.

I wont be shocked in the slightest of Trump actually DOES do something like this.

It appeals to his baser nature, and his supporters would likely support him.

Flynn is a very dangerous man, who should never have been let out of prison.

He has to pay back Trump for the pardon. This is just the start of it.

What is scary is that I guarantee that Trump has asked if he can do so and he would have done it in a second if he thought he could get away with it.

Yeah, I saw this the other day. It's rather dangerous to start suggesting that if your candidate doesn't win that martial law is an appropriate action to take. To date, there has NOT been any evidence to demonstrate massive voter fraud on the level necessary to flip an election. In the end of the day, Biden won. That's it. As a nation, as a Republic, we need to be able to abide by the results of our free and fair elections and move forward. We'll have to put up with Biden for 4 years, sucks but it's not the end of the world. In 2024, perhaps the GOP can find its way into putting up a competent and qualified candidate.

Yet this is the guy Trump appointed to be the head of our country's intelligence. Calling to suspend the Constitution. True Americans should be disgusted.

    You are probably accurate, but being Trump, one still has to wonder, lot of strange things occurring;

"White House fires Pentagon advisory board members, installs loyalists" (https://www.politico.com/news/2020/1...members-442892)

Corey Lewandowski? Now what does Corey Lewandowski know about the Pentagon, and why with a month to go would Trump put Corey Lewandowski at the Pentagon?

"Trump Pentagon nominee alleged Biden 'coup'" (https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5...en-coup-report

And now we got a Trump loyalist, who is also talking martial law, replacing Esper, another mysterious firing in a lame duck period

Trump wants to be dictator for life. There is no level he will not stoop to. As history has shown, when you have millions of followers and enablers in powerful positions, it can be done. The next 47 days at a minimum will be an ugly time in our history

Did you think the left has a monopoly on whackos? Conservatives have their own embarrassing groups too.
    Nobody will support this.

That would seem logical, however, if we have seen anything in the last four years it is that Trump has broken numerous existing norms and many on the right have not only challenged his actions but even defended them

This is truly hilarious! NOBODY is going to "declare martial law"! Find something else to worry about -- there's plenty of things you can choose from....

If by 'nobody' you mean 'a proportion of Trump supporters including people on this forum, former and current Trump Administration officials and a lawyer who recently worked for Trump and is still launching legal attempts to change the election result.' then sure, 'nobody'. If martial law was declared tommorrow I think you would be surprised how many Trump supporters magically decide that they are OK with dictatorship. All that talk about 'tyranny' when someone on the left wants to limit magazine capacity or ban bullets designed to penetrate body armour would evaporate really. really quickly. Sure, a few of you would speak up, but fewer tha nyou think. Fewer still would actually do anything to stop it.

Fortunately I can't see the military in any way alowing this to happen.

As for your 'both sides' deflection, who were the former & serving Obama (or Clinton) officials supporting martial law in 2016? An actual takeover by the military & suspension of the constitution. Maybe there were some nutters way out on the fringe, but anyone so close to the President as to be appointed to a position in the Adminstration? There is one side of politics engaging in the sort of ongoing attacks on democracy that brings calls for martial law so close to the mainstream, and it isn't 'the left'.

Well, you said one thing I think we can all agree on: "Fortunately I can't see the military in any way alowing (sic) this to happen."

Who here thinks martial law is going to be declared? I don't see anybody. I see a lot of people worried that multiple people close to Trump, including one former and one current Adminstration official, are fine with the idea of martial law. It should concern you that such talk is no longer just confined t oa lunatic fringe on the right, but now comes from numerous people close to the President.

    Easier to deflect though.

You are a victim of propaganda. That’s why you think that.
I’m a Trump supporter and I would not support martial law. Nor would anyone else I know who supported Trump.

Trumps appeal is in reduction in federal government’s over reach. His own slogan, “clean up the swamp” is about cutting governments fat. So, no, there won’t be any martial law.

If Trump even suggests the possibility of Martial law in order to reverse the election, he should be arrested immediately by The joint chiefs of staff. Such talk is treason and we cannot have it.

A few weeks ago people were scoffing that he would try to get the legislatures to try to ignore the popular vote. I never had a doubt that he would

100% chance he has asked about this - not saying he will try, but he is desperate to stay in power
