I dunno if axe + shield qualifies as an 'art'... but its definitely martial.

My personal favorite, tapered links like a traditional whip. Recently made my own.

Hope you don't mind me resurrecting an old post here, but I think it could qualify as an art. I'll be jumping in this thread with some western martial art sources and videos, but I know some guys who do viking reenactment stuff, where bossed shield (shields that you hold with a single, vertical handle behind a metal dome in the center of the wooden shield) and bearded axe are very popular. They rely on the I. 33 manuscript, which I think is the earliest European martial arts manual. It is from a later period, and it focuses on sword and buckler, but most of the moves and ideas translate very well to axe and shield. The footwork is the same, as are the basic strikes (aside from thrusts). Even though most manuals were written for swords (for a lot of reasons), the authors often mentioned that the ideas were meant to translate to other weapons.

Bucklers are much smaller than shields, though close to what you have in your picture. There's a trade-off with the size: more coverage and a chance to get your enemy's weapon stuck in the wood, but it limits some angles for your own swings. Axes were cheaper to produce than swords, but the didn't have hand protection and the center of gravity was at the very end. It required more stamina to keep swinging, but it would do more damage to enemy shields and could be used to reach around them or hook them to the side.

And to add to the European martial arts theme, I've met this instructor before. From what I recall, he sticks mostly with the German longsword traditions stemming from Liechtenauer:

Those whip weapons just really aren't good in a real fight though. A simple sword would nullify it unless you got a lucky first hit. Heck you could use your arm to tangle it up.
