Indeed, why was response so light? I'm not so sure Trump was responsible for it though. I don't know enough about how the various forces are organized.

I do know that one could, in theory, turn BLM, or any mass protest into an insurrection: order a light police presence. You want it bloody? Ensure a light presence while SIMULTANEOUSLY issuing orders to hold position.

 

You seem to be equating this with politics, granting it the flavor of normalcy, that this was legitimate protest, a group of concerned citizens seeking redress from their government. How you come to this is a mystery to me, for surely you are smarter than that!
Any individual who meets what was posited is part and parcel of said insurrectionist, seditious mob. Any who knowingly aided or stood by and allowed any part of this to occur should be held accountable. This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the rule of law and I am sure that our criminal justice system will charge as many as can be identified and found. The members of law enforcement who should have and most assuredly did know this was coming and failed to act appropriately should not be allowed to merely resign. They have much to answer for and I suspect that their actions and inactions will be closely scrutinized in the coming weeks and months. This was no small thing nor should the response of the justice department be a small thing. As for the legislators who took part in whipping that crowd into a lynch mob frenzy these past two months, hopefully their respective bodies will deal with them and deal with them harshly, although I hold out little hope of seeing that happen. Nor do I expect to see the requisite political will to remove this president lest he do something truly and unthinkably awful.

If impeached, he will lose his ability to run in 2024, lose his Secret Service detail, lose his presidential pension and his annual travel allowance. All are good reasons.

Having said that, I don't think it will happen - Mitch has already basically stated that he wouldn't engage in any impeachment activity until just before/just after inauguration. But I think it would be a good thing to save us the money we would be continuing to pay Trump.
