Security in Washington D.C is being way overblown

First is the obscene number of National Guardsman being deployed there. Now I heard on the news that the police have requested 50 caliber machine guns!!!

50 caliber machine guns can stop any vehicle short of a main battle tank and can shoot down jet fighters and helicopters. Is there any evidence at all that pro Trump fanatics have any access to armored vehicles and combat aircraft? Yet somehow the police think they need them? WTF!!!

The source of all this seems two fold
    1) Authorities are terribly embarrassed about that small riot last week and are classically overcompenating.
    2) Authorities want to mass such an overwhelming force that any possible hostile actions by crowds is completely deterred.

If it is the first, then there is no justification for such a force. If it is the second, there is still minimal justification for it.

Seems to me that several hundred members of Congress really got freaked out when they had to take cover for probably the first time in their lives no matter how brief it was. Remember that four of the five who died in this riot were rioters. Tragic as it was, only one law enforcement officer was killed.

Disgraceful as the riot was, the reaction seems way, way overblown to me.

50 cops injured and the possibility that national security documents were stolen out of Pelosi's office is not a minor thing.
Thin international image of America not being in control of their own government damages our economy in
long ranging problems with foreign investments.

Plus the talk online about 4,000 MAGA marchers surrounding the White House to prevent Biden from entering ... no, they
need to bring the hammer down hard on this one before it gets out of hand.

Any halfway competent police force would be able to handle 4,000 MAGA marchers.

So you agree, we need National Guard - cause the Capitol Police already failed against several thousand rioters.

You need to develope a little more respect for our form of government and the importance of protecting it.

    People die for our democracy.

50 cals? Really? If that is true that is some serious firepower. I would agree with the OP about it being a little to much for riots.

Even if every member of Congress and the VP had been killed we would still have the same "form of government".

    Murderous rioting doesn't change that.

After all, they’re just a bunch of good ‘ol boys flying their freak flag and having a little fun, while posting selfies of. themselves at an insurrection and high diving each other.

So some people got hurt, and there was a lot of vandalism.

No different then the crowd at Friday night lights when the home team wins the championship. They just tore up the field a little and tried to pull down the goalposts...

    Isn’t that right?

Assuming 50 cals are being brought in I’m guessing there is a concern of a vehicle based attack. VBEDs are no joke.

Being able to put a VIED today, itsn't like going down to Walmart and going shopping. Yes, there are people who can put one together, and the FBI and Homeland watches them really closely. And I'm sure they're watching them even more closely now. But getting back to the main point, 50cals are overkill. I really don't think they're bring them in. I think that is just a rumor.

Might be a rumor, could still be true. Either way if there is a legitimate threat that such an attack could occur I don’t blame them for preparing for it.
Making explosive devices isn’t that hard and I think it would be the height of hubris to assume our law enforcement agencies have an eye on everyone capable making one. Someone loads enough bang in the trunk they could cause some serious damage.

After Granny and the Viking took over our government, they need this type of security to rule us all.

Why not make like the world's newest banana republic we've become? Bring in Abrams and Apaches, maybe a few gunboats parked in the Potomac to boot.

The possibilities for inspirational entertainment are growing!

Next, I suggest that the incoming Democrat government have all the military contingents in the Capital (and especially in the vicinity of the Capitol Building) learn how to do a proper parade, complete with "goose-step" ("Stechschritt").

The old Wehrmacht was the best at these marches 'back in the day', but today the Chinese military could teach our guys how to do it right!

And polls show most Republicans don't see a problem with what happened.

One of the cultists for tRUMP left a message on a Representatives/Senators machine making a statement about "poking the bear!"
Seems the retRUMPlicans poked the "bear" alright.
