The campaign is over. Biden was won the election. Very soon, he will need to make real decisions and live with them.

A caravan of immigrants is on its way to the border, demanding that Biden "honors his commitments". The caravan has about 1,000 people, but it is sure to grow.

Biden's domestic policy advisor seems to have thrown cold water on the idea of opening up the border too fast.

"Processing capacity at the border is not like a light that you can just switch on and off," incoming Biden domestic policy adviser Susan Rice told Spanish wire service EFE. "Migrants and asylum seekers absolutely should not believe those in the region peddling the idea that the border will suddenly be fully open to process everyone on Day 1. It will not."

"Our priority is to reopen asylum processing at the border consistent with the capacity to do so safely and to protect public health, especially in the context of COVID-19," she said. "This effort will begin immediately but it will take months to develop the capacity that we will need to reopen fully."

But 1,000 people is not many. Soon, he will likely have to decide what to do with half a million, with more on the way.

This baby now belongs to him and his Democrat-controlled Congress. No more Trump or Republicans to blame for everything.

    What will he do?

After what we've seen for four years I truly think you'll be favorably impressed.

    What do you expect?

Biden has promised a moratorium on deportations. What do we do about tens of thousands of immigrants jumping over the wall (where there is one)? Once they're on U.S. soil, they're in to stay if there are no deportations. Hundreds of thousands are coming if this is our policy.

So what shall he do? Just let them all in? Or shall he back off of his promise and deport?

He won the election. Now the rubber hits the road. Real decisions will be made one way or the other.

Biden will be traitorous and open the floodgates to terrorists and more Democrat voters who will continue to breed like rats, creating more poverty and blight and increasing govt dependence. It’s what they want.

A caravan is pretty much the bottom of my concerns. If I had my way, anyone who wanted to come here would be allowed to, unless we had a specific reason to disallow the individual, which would be slightly more restrictive than what we had for the majority of our country's history and slightly more restrictive than what most of our ancestors went through.

But Republicans and Democrats don't decide elections. They just mostly vote for their party. Independents (30% of the electorate) decide elections. And I don't think millions of immigrants flooding over our borders with no chance of being deported is going to sit well with Independents. For 2022 and 2024, that is a loser.

So there's the conundrum for Democrats.

But for much of our history we had wide open unsettled spaces. Later we had an industrial revolution that needed workers.

Now, most farming can be done with machines. There are no more wide open spaces to be settled, logged off, and farmed. And the industrial revolution is working in reverse, laying off workers to automation. Our history is in the past; it is not our present.

it will never be "real" for biden. his decisions will all be given to him by the party. he will merely be the face that we blame for all the stupidity that progressivism has to offer, much as obama before him. the drones will cheer him on. he will be a media darling, no matter how inept he may be. he will go down in history as having defeated covid, despite the fact that the groundwork was laid long before his senile ass sat itself in the oval office. he is merely a place-holder and that's all the drones really wanted.

The need for labor has not changed. Even after automation. There is no economically viable excuse for restricting immigration. At all. Resistance to immigration has no economic justification.

There is a limit to the need for labor. "Available labor" doesn't just create its own need. What happens when we have millions of people in the country and no jobs for them?

That's never happened. Ever. In the history of our country or any other.
The addition of new labor sources tends to coincide with additional need . . . because additional population produces both additional labor and additional demand for labor . . . plus there's the fact that labor is an extraordinarily flexible asset. Among other things, this is why historical addition of labor has not ever really resulted in consequential unemployment. See the Mariel boatlift. Yes . . . additional labor does create its own need . . . because laborers have needs. Have you not even attempted to think about this? Seriously?

We've never had a situation where millions of people have entered the country without any labor demand for them . . . for reasons that anyone who has passed econ 101 should be able to understand.

We still do. 90% of the population lives in what, 10 cities? The only reason Repubs care about immigration is becuase it gives them an 'other' for their racist base to attack that has no ability to respond electorially. That last part is also why Repubs want to tighten immigration controls and oppose legalization because otherwise those immigrants getting ****ed over could respond electorially (usually this is low key admitted by some off hand comment about new Dem voters).

I have thought of ALL of those things. But I think you are thinking in the past, as if there were new lands to be pushed out into and exploited, and factories in desperate need of workers. That is simply not the case anymore.

Not really. The "wide open spaces" are all settled and committed to conservation, farming, ranching, and a certain amount of logging.

And don't talk to me about racism. I have white, black, and Japanese in my immediate family, and my father-in-law (RIP) was a descendant of the Sioux. I also happen to think that workers from south of the border are better workers than similarly skilled Americans.

    So stuff it, thank you.

For me, it's just economic reality.

Look ... We need some low-skill workers. We don't need, nor can we afford, millions of them to support and drive down wages.

There has to be control and a sensible metering of immigration according to our needs. This means a secure border and deportation of illegal entrants. Every other country on earth does it for the same reasons.

Most of this country is still open and I ain't talking about Fed land. The Plains states are being depopulated even. It's not an issue of room and it's the robots taking the jobs. It's also not an issue of crime, immigrents tend to be extra observant of laws to keep from getting kicked out. Denying it doesn't change that racism is the only real argument against immigration.

Cool CNN/MSNBC narrative, bro, but it's false.

Name even one developed country that would accept a million low-skill immigrants from Mexico and Central America.

UK, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand? Their answer would be "No". So name one.

And it's all about racism (except maybe New Zealand, they can legit claim to not have room). White genocide this, Muslim takeover that.

You can fit everyone in Texas and have less population density than Manhattan. We can feed the entire world and still have a surplus at current production levels. Robots taking jobs makes labor, skilled or otherwise, irrelevant. Being an 'other' is the only intellectually honest reason to oppose immigration.

Big problem was that our last President had zero involvement in Central American policy. We've spent literally trillions
of dollars worrying about the Middle-East, when it's Central America that has had more direct impact on our day to day lives.

We need a better plan to partner with Central American countries to keep their residents from heading north
in the first place. More stability there is beneficial to us all - including to elderly Americans who need less expensive
places to retire. If the last President had spent half the time he did playing golf and tweeting working
on a South American Plan, it would have been more effective than any wall. We'll see if Biden does any better.

    @DavidMK I agree with this.

Let’s manufacture stuff in Central and South America instead of in China.
