    Republicans will give a trillion dollar tax cut to the rich, careening the deficits to hitherto unseen heights, but asking them to help
    those on the lower end of the economy ladder to get through the COVID crisis with a little bit money to ease the pain, no, all of the sudden, NOW they are concerned about the 'deficit'.

    See, folks, this is what they mean about 'we are the party of small government', which is to say, translated, it means more for the rich, and less for the poor.

    This idea they are the 'populist' party is the biggest con of the century.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/21/biden-coronavirus-stimulus-plan-461216

    Senate Republicans vowed Thursday that President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief bill will not get 60 votes, daring the White House to either compromise with the GOP or use partisan procedural tactics to evade their filibuster.

    Put simply, the Senate GOP says Biden’s proposal spends too much money and comes too soon on the heels of Congress’ $900 billion stimulus package from last month. And that unless the proposal has major changes made to it or Democrats use budget reconciliation to pass it with a simple majority, it is doomed on the Senate floor.

    Sorry repubs, looks like Schumer will push a Covid relief / stimulus bill through on a budget reconciliation bill, or better yet, nuke the last remaining filibuster altogether.

    I was open to keeping the filibuster yesterday. Not so today. Nuke it.

    1.9b is too much and 1,400 cks for Everyone is not the best solution. The stimulus needs to be more targetted.

    Biden today has said he will fund food and rent for those without jobs. That's good.

    Now as for stimulus of the economy, it is too soon to fully open the economy, if it is desired to save lives from the virus.

    In fact, a projected half a million lives (by March 2021) could have been saved if the government had taken control of the economy in March 2020.

    Comical claims by mainstream economists that the facts have changed – Bill Mitchell – Modern Monetary Theory (economicoutlook.net)

    (the above is a link)

    The Financial Times editorial last week (January 14, 2021) – A fiscal policy for all seasons – held the publication out as a new messenger of fiscal dominance, claiming that “fiscal orthodoxy has changed”.

    How do we know that?

    Well the editors write:

    Organisations such as the IMF and the OECD have told governments that, with low interest rates seemingly here to stay, the costs of excessive borrowing are much lower for advanced economies than previously thought.

    Previously thought by them but not any economist who actually understood what the capacities of the fiat monetary system actually are.

    Anyway, apparently, “the aim of balancing the budget can, at least temporarily, be dropped.”

    Apprently also, this is now an accepted view across the political spectrum.

    And the right-wing think tanks also support it.

    So mainstream neoliberal economic orthodoxy is responsible for the projected half a million deaths, all in the name of balanced government budget mythology.

    See Prof. Stephanie Kelton's "The Debt and Deficit Myth".

    $1400 for every US citizen only amounts to less than a half trillion dollars. If it was targeted, they could most likely cut that by more than half. Then maybe a bit for small business and then cut out the rest of it.

    Yes, but this should have been legislated and maintained since the beginning of the pandemic. Why wasn't it? See post #4 above.

    The fact remains Trump could have saved a projected (by March 2021) half a million lives if he had authorized the Fed to pay food, rent, mortgages and essential utilities for all idled workers (inc. small business), regardless of the "deficit", as apparently now even mainstream economists are beginning to accept......see post #4.

    The thing is, that McConnell will try to get as much political hay out of Democrats torpedoing the filibuster, as he can. For example, by filibustering certain of Biden cabinet nominees, he's trying to get Dems to pull the trigger right out of the gate, when he and the rest of the R's will be able to make the story all about Dem "overreach." What Democrats need to do is craft a big bill, one as popular as it is good policy (*ahem* Infrastructure!), put in some poison pills for R's (like loading the bill with Green energy initiatives) and dare them to filibuster. They won't be able to resist, and that's the time to go.

    Trump just spent more than any President has in 4 years in our History, during a supposedly great economy where he should have been paying down the debt had that been true (it was not true), and now republican are worried about spending?

    what Republicans really want is to crash the economy.... then they will blame their actions on Biden

    1. There was/is no fiscal impediment to a TOTAL lockdown of the economy as outlined in my posts.

    2. People would be willing to comply with a total lockdown, PROVIDED all financial insecurity was removed by the government.

    3. Therefore close to half a millions lives (projected) would be saved, because the virus doesn't spread without close contact.

    No grocery stores. No other businesses open. I don't know how it is around your house, but we might be able to live for a week or two without more groceries.

    There is no way Trump could have saved a half million lives.

    Are you a Conservative? What % of half a million lives could have been saved with a full economic lockdown; with people limited to essential shopping?

    The claim was Trump could have saved a half million lives. That is absurd.

    We target it here in Aus. Mainly goes to people on welfare, support for businesses/redundancy and for other incentives. I.e. Gov sponsored Travel vouchers for regional tourism, etc.

    Fact; Last April's stimulus checks were distributed to;

    73 million couples X $2,400 = $175.2 billion
    78 milllion individuals X $1,200 = $93.6 billion
    40 million children under 17 X $500 = $20 billion

    Total recipients; 264 million
    Total cost; $288 billion

    Thus, an extra $1,400 for every US citizens will cost; $369 billion (264 million X $1,400)

    Note: In 2008, Bush's stimulus checks were targetted to the minus 75K, thus, back then, how many didn't need the money?

    Answer; Irrelevant due to the fact, the purpose of said checks was to STIMULATE the economy, thus, here's your money, and go spend it.

    In addition the above, a relief check to those who are behind their bills, and a stimulus check to those who don't needed.

    I'm the only one in this forum who figured out the following;

    Fact; Last April's stimulus checks were distributed to;

    73 million couples X $2,400 = $175.2 billion
    78 milllion individuals X $1,200 = $93.6 billion
    40 million children under 17 X $500 = $20 billion

    Thus, 73M + 73M + 78M + 40M = 264M ''qualified'' citizens.

    The claim was citizens. I counted citizens. Actually the total number of citizens is closer to 300 million because of the illegal and legal non citizens.
