r/PornIsMisogyny is a page on Reddit devoted to combatting the prevalence of pornography in our society. Their sidebar description as of November 2020 currently states:

This is a subreddit to raise awareness about the misogynistic nature of pornography. We want to raise awareness of the evils of porn and promote abstinence from pornography as a boycott on this toxic misogynistic industry.

I highly recommend checking out r/PornIsMisogyny for more information on the dangers of pornography and the facts about porn addiction.

It's mostly crap. I don't like porn in a general but 1) it's not against porn but heterosexual porn 2) it's against porn industry what I can get and it's an industry I don't appreciate 3) All of that is mostly about controlling men sexuality.

Porn is disgusting and harmful. Not only are you, by watching it, relying on the fantasies of some pervy director but also are you pleasuring yourself to women you know are being used and hurt.

That cannot be healthy in any way.

It is fine to call it disgusting since thaty is a personal judgement. It is not harmful however.

People have fantasies and there is nothing pervy about that or about filming it. In most of those films there are men AND women or often JUST men. No they are not being " used and hurt " They are overwhelmingly well paid and do what they do for the money and are fine with it.

The very title porn is misogyny is a lie.

It is not misogynistic in fact it is quite the opposite. Tens of thousands of women ( maybe hundreds of thousands ) have made very good money performing in pornography and many of them have become VERY wealthy as in multi millionares.

It is not perfect. I have heard some women who regret working in the industry but the same is true for ANY and ALL industries.

Most women working in it like their job a few even love it.

It is not in any way shape or form misogynistic.

Is very harmful. The actresses often come from a background of sexual abuse and/or have severe insecurities which makes it easier to lure them into doing nasty things on camera. Furthermore, it is now easier than ever to produce pornography which makes the industry even more creepy.

If you know about this and still "get off" to it, the implication is that sexual exploitation turns you on. Furthermore, it ruins the reward system in your brain and inflates the value of sex.

No. They are de facto being hurt. Many former stars have spoken out about it - Not everything is as consentual as it may seem and there is a lot of drugs and violence involved.

@Ritter Then it make you against real life pornography and heterosexual porn, not porn in a general manner.

I'm against the use of porn, but I'm not against forbidding porn, that subreddit is just about controling people sexuality.

    What is "real life pornography"?

I am against both the use porn and against forbidding it. I am only pointing out the degeneracy of porn.

Like any occupation it has risk and the workers can get hurt. Compared to most occupations it is not harmfu.

True some performers come from a background of abuse but many others do not . All are consenting adults making informed decision s and the same is true for those joining the military. Or pursuing a career in music. Or teachers or any profession on earth .

They are not de facto being hurt. For every star complaining about their experiences others say the opposite.

there is no evidence of violence, force or coercion. The drug use in the industry is no better or worse than any other occupation and drug abuse is everywhere.

    Degeneracy is subjective

Feel free to hate it. You have every right to do so and to express it. But the op claims misogyny which is a lie

There is violence, force and coercion in some parts of the porn industry. That's true of many industries, including the food and textile industries. It doesn't make the given industry itself bad, however.

Sex trafficking doesn't make porn or prostitution bad, anymore than slaved sweat shops make dress making bad.

Clamp down on actual abuse, and use the people working in the industry and clients of the industry to help you in this effort.

Imagine if you could read men's minds. Its would be some pretty dirty X-Rated stuff. And it would be "Misogyny". And just look at the violence in movies and video games. Its ok for our minds and fantasies to be less than politically correct and moral. I believe that healthy well-adjusted people aren't those who suppress every dark thing in their natures and try to be perfect all the time.

It definitely rots the brain. It's hard to say if you can call it "misogyny" since the women do do it voluntarily and are often paid very well, much better than their male counterparts. It does seem to take a mental toll on the pornstars. Many big name pornstars died suddenly via either overdose or suicide. August Ames for example killed herself for being bullied over her unwillingness to "work" with a homosexual actor. They definitely experience abuse and are likely subjected to things they don't actually want to do.

We should put just as much effort into protecting minors from being exposed (and being able to access) porn as we should put into protecting adults rights to make, sell and view it without coersion.

I think it is probably more harmful than beneficial, just like booze, gambling, weed, cheeseburgers.... but a nanny state is far worse.

    As to porn being 'misogyny'..
defined as: dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.

So, utterly ridiculous. Not only is there porn for women and porn for gay men, neither of which can possibly be demonstrated to be 'anti-woman' in any way, but with the exception of rape and/or other abuse porn, men generally watch women in porn because they like women. Just because they like them sexually does not indicate that they don't like them in other ways.

I agree with other posters- this notion that 'porn = misogyny' is born of a desire to denegrate men and punish them for being men by attacking things that are primarily enjoyed by men.

An interesting side-thought: Why is sex legal, paying for a person for sex illegal, and paying a person for sex while filming it legal?

I never understood that myself. IMO they should legalize prostitution and regulate it so its safe.

That said....I wonder if the people that claim its misogynistic realize that tons of women watch porn also. Its not just for men. Think Pornhub has a woman membership of around 30 some odd percent for just that site alone. And they get around 10 billion views per year I think it was. And there's literally thousands of porn sites out there. If the same holds true for even half of them, that is A LOT of women watching porn. Are they misogynistic also?

So how do you feel about prostitution?

there would be no porn if no women were there to make it.

Porn or prostitution isn't misogynistic anymore than agriculture or textiles are slavery. People take a small subset and try to sully an entire larger category.

There is undoubtedly porn that is both mysoginistic and exploitative. It isn't hard to find either. However, to condemn the whole lot based on that segment is to deliberately misrepresent pornography. It is reasonable to point out that it overwhelmingly caters to male fantasies, but that hardly seems a reason to ban it.

As an aside, I know someone who occasionally makes porn. She is probably more 'woke' than anyone anyone here knows. As far as she is concerned it is her body and if someone wants to pay her to have sex with men or women (she does both) then that is her decision to make.

With the increasing spread of high speed broadband internet and the availablilty of cheap cameras it is increasingly possible for people who want to make pornography for fun or profit to do so on their own terms. There is no doubt that the porn industry has some unsavoury characters in it. Once upon a time they were the gatekeepers of the industry. That is less the case now than ever. Good luck trying to ban an industry that only requires an internet connection and a smartphone.

Polaroid cameras were the first great leap into homemade porn, and sexual imagery has been around as long as mankind. Porn in some form will be around as long as we are.

    Duuuh, you don't say.

Obviously, I am not in the industry, but many former actresses have come out to speak about the widespread abuse, drug use and force in the studios. It is not a nice business, bro.
