I was very surprised to read today that the highest paid person in our entire Federal government in 2019, the last year they currently have figures on, was now 80 year old Dr. Anthony Fauci earning $417,608 in 2019. He made more than the presidents $400,000.

Considering what we face I hope he's worth it.

Hard to believe that an 80 year old man is the highest paid of our 4 million Federal employees.

It's important to compensate an expert well. You want them to be able to do their job and not sell important information (or themselves) to the highest bidder. I wonder if he received "hazard duty pay" to endure Trump overriding him at ever turn.

If you think that salary is all these permanent, long in the tooth federal employees "earn," or rather are "paid"... well keep on believing it... the truth would cause too much cognitive dissonance. Look at their net worth, their families and friends' net worth, and then just -start- to get some idea of what and how they are actually paid.

I know department chairs in medical schools who make north of $300,000, As a director of a whole NIH institute, I am not surprised. At his stage of the career, however, I doubt that he needs the money.

Government employees tend to have salary caps. They sometimes get around this to attract candidates with other perks like 2 years retirement benefits for one year service, etc.

Fauci is the epitome of a public servant, you know, those people in public service working toward the common good on behalf of all Americans. I have no doubt he could have made a helluva lot more money in the private sector and I'm grateful he ended up staying in public service. He deals with executives of companies that earn multiples of what he makes but I don't think it's ever been about money for Fauci.......and he's in pretty darn good shape for an 80 year old man. :)

I don't see what possible relevance his age could have. If we want one of the world's major experts in pandemics, he has to be compensated accordingly. He'd probably be making more if he worked for Pfizer.

This is nothing. Usually the highest paid state employees are football and basketball coaches. Nick Saban makes $9.3 million a year. To me that is friggin disgusting.

And then they wonder why college tuitions are so high, usually the football coach is the highest paid position on campus. If they are in a major conference.

I as an 80 year old see it as yet another sign of the deteriorating of our country. Where are our younger people?? Our congress is filled with too many old timers our two presidential candidates were over the hill. Our major corporations especially in the tech space are CEO'd primarily with people born and raised over seas The vast majority of doctors on our media discussing Covid are either Indian or speak with a foreign accent. Where the hell are all the up and coming young AMERICANS?????

The fact that we don't have younger people coming along to replace the aged Drs. Fauci and Brix is a frightening sign for the country's future in my mind.

Hard to believe an EXPERT paid that much would say not to wear a mask one month and insist that everybody wear a mask the next month. I would have lost my job if I made a fock up that bad at my job (30 years in the industry and not a single death or major accident due to a software bug). I can kind of see why people get into the bureaucracy, absolutely no standards of performance and no expectations.... that is reserved for people who actually do something useful. This guy is an embarrassing hack.

That's the thing that gets me. For years, education has been a football between the two ideological parties in this country, but one has to wonder, for the country that was able to send a man to the moon, how come we can't mass manufacture prodigies to create the future we've envisioned for decades?

It's 2021! I should be typing this from a lounge at a Hyatt on Mars!

Good job. That was one year and one week ago. Are you suggesting the degree of severity for our pandemic is Fauci's fault or was it perhaps some guy who wanted to put Clorox in your system? I doubt at that time Fauci knew how irresponsibly trump would behave.

If he said that you should worry about the virus in China at the time, you know, where he says "right now", when there were zero identified cases and zero deaths would you have started worrying or would you have called him a scare mongerer?

At the time he advised that uninfected people don't need to wear a mask, the number of reported new cases in China had dropped to near zero
