While the primary defense Trump’s legal defense teams plans to use at his upcoming Senate impeachment trial next week will be that the Senate lacks jurisdiction, on Friday night, President Trump’s impeachment lawyer Bruce Castor revealed that part of Trump’s defense will include videos of Democrats encouraging political violence. He described the defense to Laura Ingraham on Fox News.

“There’s a lot of tape of cities burning and courthouses being attacked and federal agents being assaulted by rioters in the streets, cheered on by Democrats throughout the country, and many of them in Washington using really the most inflammatory rhetoric that’s possible to use,” Castor pointed out before noting that Democrats were not accused on inciting that violence, yet Trump is on video stating clearly that he wanted people to march peacefully to the Capitol.

“You better be careful what you wish for,” Castor said of the Democrats.”

The bottom line is America is going to be tuned in watching the videos of high profile democrats encouraging rioters and being in sympathy with them. And they are going to just have to sit there and take it.

 

There is lots of video of Dirty Donald both before and after the election building up the rage in his supporters so I'm sure the prosecutors will be using quite a bit of video too.

 

Saying the Dems did it too (although true) is not a good defense. A better defense would be Trump is a private citizen now and the Congress has no power to try him for anything.

 

Fine. The longer the democrats drag this out, the less business gets done in the Senate.

 

I believe that's exactly the defense they plan to use. Under NO circumstances will he be convicted anyway so after his team makes that presentation, they should all just refuse to acknowledge the authority of that body and wait on the verdict.

Legalities aside Nancy and Chuck have promised their followers a big sham trial and a trial they shall get. I'm sure anyone with cable or satellite TV can watch it on C-SPAN.

 

Are you saying that Trump followers have no right to rally in Washington, because if they do then Antifa and BLM will infiltrate the rally and cause damage? But they're doing it anyway. They don't need the cover up of the Trump followers to cause mayhem.

Here's Antifa and BLM yesterday, as they marched through Washington DC threating the diners, and chanting to burn down the city.

Look, I don't give a damn who supports them - which I assume is Soros' Open Society Foundation. They terrorize people and should be labelled as such.

That's the dumbest "defense" I've ever seen. By far. "Your honor, I can't be guilty of murder, because here is someone else who committed murder." I feel dumber for having read this OP.

 

Trump's best defense is he's a private citizen now and Congress has no power to try a private citizen. Go search the constitution and get back to me.

 

Pelosi's and Schumer's intent is to keep Trump from running again, but even if he was impeached, he would still run since the trial is illegal and goes against the Constitution.

I agree that this is the best defense . . . but it still isn't a good one. Dems cited conversations among the founding fathers to show that they anticipated something like this and intended for impeachment conviction to still be a thing after an official left office.

Overall, it doesn't matter. They won't have the votes to convict. The weakness of Trump's case is interesting, but ultimately irrelevant.

 

They won't have enough votes to convict, agreed, and Nancy and Chuck know it. Therefore I'm calling it a sham trial. Somebody change my mind. Not to mention impeaching an ex-president is kind of bizarre to begin with.

There may be some GOP senators that may be side with the Democrats in their efforts to convict Trump. For those that are loyal to Trump, it could rain on your parade.

 

The problem is that the alleged offence happened while he was still a sitting President.
It will be interesting if Trump is cleared; again, and he sues Pelosi and the others for malicious prosecution, as this new impeachment is clearly intended to prevent Trump becoming President again.

 

I wish he would try. It would be a golden opportunity to broadcast more of Trump's filth and might even last until mid-terms. Democratic campaign managers would be handed anti-Republican sound and video content on a silver platter. And Dirty Donnie would lose.

 

Yea, not sure why they bother. Trump's political career is toast either way. His behavior after losing in November makes it impossible to ever win anything again.

 

Trump's going to be found not guilty in this second sham impeachment trial like he was in the first. What are Chuck and Nancy thinking putting the country through this crap during a pandemic?

Yes, that would be my thoughts as well. I see no reason why any Republican should give any credibility at all to such a sham of an impeachment, but I guess McConnell was hell-bent on pressing on with it. Republicans are often their own worst enemy, especially their own leadership.

Don’t confuse a political trial with a judicial one. They are apples and kudzu.

 

I'm aware of that...but the statement still holds. Can't justify an attack on the Capitol with a antifa riot in Portland or Seattle. THAT's truly apples and oranges.
