Yeah, we got killer birds too. Why not.

The main reason there are so few deaths from venom injectors (snakes, spiders, stonefish, octopus etc) - is the development of antivenom. Not only have we developed antivenoms for pretty much everything that is likely to kill people, but we make sure it is widely and readily available and we keep making it.

In addition to the handy tips Sallyally mentioned in the 'avoidance' category, people are taught to pay attention to what bites you so the correct antivenom can be given and to bind and immobilize the bite. While I don't have specific data, there appears to have been a drop in snakebite deaths per capita from the 60s or 70s, which I suspect corresponds with improved medical services in rural areas and the more widespread availability of antivenom.

There are hundreds of bites every year, but on average about 2 deaths. Not bad.

Ps. Most snakes are shy creatures and will attack if backed into a corner, trodden on or attacked.
They prefer to retreat if possible.

It's rattlesnakes where I grew up in California. Hit a golf ball in the weeds next to the fairway? Forget it.
Yeah, they're nears Cairns and further north, but they're fun for scaring the snout of of tourists.

Aussies are tough, not stupid--even they keep an eye on cassowaries. :)

Cassowaries just toughen up you Aussies. :)
Makes sense and was my guess when I first visited Australia and got the tourist snake warning to pay attention but not be paranoid.
India, by contrast, has thousands of snake bite deaths ever year.

Flotsam from the Indonesian sub has been found.
Would it be a horrible death? Waiting to suffocate? Hoping against hope for contact from the outside.

Time for Victoria to secede from

    "Australia"?

    https://news.yahoo.com/u-stands-australia-over-axed-074125554.html

The Chinese embassy in Australia earlier criticized the move by Foreign Minister Marise Payne to veto two agreements signed by Victoria state as "provocative" and said it would further damage ties.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters on Thursday the accords were cancelled because his federal government didn't want other levels of government to enter into agreements that conflict with Australia's foreign policy.

Under a new process, states must consult with the foreign minister before signing agreements with other nations. .
    .

A new process and the Right of Victoria! ?
:hmm: Same ole for centralized sake, gov't drift

Sigh, read the Constitution, under it international treaties fall within the prerogative of the Federal Government, not State Governments. Twas ever thus. Which BTW is the reason Victoria didn't appeal the decision to rescind the (three) treaties signed by it with foreign governments. So not a dramatic change in Victoria's 'rights' or status after all.

As for the 'denying' you a bill of rights? We've never had one from the inception of the Commonwealth. Now you can argue the merits of that decision or not but the fact remains the current government isn't 'denying' you anything, any more than its denying me a new Maserati.

You want a Bill of Rights? OK then, do what I'd have to do for the car - work for it. (And I do mean work, not whinge. A lot of people today seem to confuse the two.)

We don’t get worked up about State’s Rights here.
If our Premier has made a misstep of which I’m critical, it’s doing deals with our little Chines friends, outside the oversight of the federal government.

The Aussie and Kiwi TV shows are the best IMO!!!!
"800 Words" "McLeod's Daughters" "The Heart Guy" (or maybe it's called "Doctor Doctor")
We watch them on "Acorn TV". In fact most of the foreign TV series we see on Acorn
are far better than the TV programs in the US

Catcher Stresses Importance of 'Snake Proofing' Coops
    After Python Swallows Pet Chicken

A snake catcher in Queensland stressed the importance of making sure chicken coops are secure after a python ate a “pet chicken” at a home in Dulong.

Footage shared by Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 on April 16 shows catcher Stuart McKenzie removing the carpet python – which has a visibly full belly – from the chicken coop and releasing it back into a wooded area.

    Indonesia.

    Close enough.
Remember their submarine that appears as is torn apart?

Indonesian officials working to determine how a military submarine with 53 crew members sunk earlier this month during a training exercise said the vessel may have been hit by an internal solitary wave in the treacherous waters off Bali.

Australia’s ABC.net.au reported that such waves are invisible but have the strength to drag a submarine down to dangerous depths. The report said that there have been several theories, but evidence seems to point to a wave that would not be evident on the surface of the water. . .

"There was nothing that they could do, no time to do anything... if the sub was brought down by such a wave. It likely angled [downward], causing all the crew members to roll down," Isnurwanto said, according to Nikkei Asia. "We have to do further investigation, but that is most likely what happened." . .

If the alligators, sharks, snakes, etc. don't do it
    blame undetectable , underwater waves!

So why don't they install detectors?

The director of the Burnet Insitute is warning Australia will need to remain on high alert for COVID-19 outbreaks for at least the next 18 months and probably longer.

Globally, coronavirus cases are soaring and total deaths now exceed three million.

Professor Brendan Crabb told Neil Mitchell that despite the rollout of vaccines, we’re not out of the woods yet.

“This is going to go on for another 12 to 24 months,” he said.

“We are living in a dream world if we think it’s over.”

The poison used to eradicate a biblical mouse plague ravaging southeast Australia is having a deadly effect on native wildlife
    [IMG]

The poisonous bait that is being used to eradicate a huge mouse plague ravaging large parts of Australia is having a deadly effect on native wildlife, experts have warned.

Earlier this week, an image of dozens of Galah Cockatoo birds dead in a cemetery in Parkes, New South Wales, went viral after it was shared on Facebook by Kelly Lacey, a volunteer for the NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service

In the post, she said: "Seeing them sitting with each other under trees, knowing they were suffering until they have eventually died, has utterly broke me. Found 2 still alive, sadly 1 died on way home. (whatever the poison was it is more potent then I have experienced, and they have bled internally)."

Later during an interview with The Guardian, Lacey said that she found over 100 dead Galahs in the cemetery. .

Australia's Victoria state reports 1 new COVID case
    Fri, June 11, 2021,
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's Victoria state, which emerged from a strict lockdown earlier this week, recorded one new community case of COVID-19 on Saturday, the government said via Twitter.

Investigations are underway as to how the person contracted the infection, authorities said.

The outbreak, which triggered the two-week snap lockdown late last month, has now seen 91 cases since May 24.

New South Wales, the country's most populous state, and neighbouring Queensland are on high alert after an infected woman and her husband travelled from Victoria through several country towns in both states. . . .

    Winter is coming! Downunder
