You are right about causation; human beings are too complex to view as simply antecedent and consequence. I suspect that these incidents are higher with person that experience military conflict only because of the selective bias attracts certain personality traits. Psychopathic persons that compose about 10% of the population have no sense of fear and are in fact attracted to the military, or sports, or other high-risk activity. A “normal” person can be defined as the “statistical frequency” of behavior, or as a standard normal established regardless of the other people do so that an entire society could be abnormal in this second sense.

What about human happiness? I wanted to point out that the military life, like law enforcement, creates life long internal energy-sapping conflicts that result in depression, tension, and mental and physical illnesses. Often traumatic events resurface years after they occurred resulting in neurotic and psychotic individuals losing all sense of well being. If an entire society is militarized, these problems become more frequent. There are other factors involved such as family history, culture, psychological make up, economic class and so on. Even the normally healthy are not exempt from demise such as with the case of Alfred Wong for example (the child pictured below).

Albert Wong, the Yountville shooter, was in the Army Reserve from 1998 to 2002. He was on active duty in 2010 and in combat as a sniper in Afghanistan in 2011 then returned from duty in April 2012. He was in Hawaii at various times from 2010 to 2013. Wong’s fellow soldiers said he was their best soldier and very well liked--by all military standards Wong an excellent soldier.
Wong was adopted at 8-years-old after his father died and mother was disabled by illness. He had conflicts with his siblings and on one occasion pushed his stepbrother down a stairway breaking the boy’s arm. Wong lived in various foster homes so he had personal family issues from his early childhood.

Wong’s adopted brother, Lampkin, said when Wong returned from active duty he might have stopped taking his medication and began drinking. His medication has not been publicized so far, but may have been a (SSRI) class antidepressant that suppresses empathy. Nevertheless, Wong earned a degree in business and computer programming. He took care of his sick mother until she died last year. In 2008 he held an armed security guard license, a security trainer, and a private investigator license. Some of these licenses were beginning to expire. Wong was so motivated that he enrolled for PTSD counseling at Pathway Home without considering all the consequences of failing such a program. It is likely some of his friends may have encouraged him to enroll.

Pathway Home is a 501c3nonprofit organization started in 2008 with $5.6 million to treat veterans with PTSD. Veterans pay about $700 per month for PTSD counseling, but the fee can be waved for needy patients. The methodology and techniques used by Pathway to help veterans is unclear, but some reports are that Pathway includes unconventional techniques such as yoga and swimming with dolphins. Like many non-profits, Pathway Home is organized like a corporation with officers and an executive director. Pathway Home enrolls men only for treatment, but the staff had some women. Wong may have viewed the Pathway Home Inc. as only a subcontractors collecting payment for counseling veterans, but the focus really seemed to be on the staff themselves.

We have the least amount of information about what went wrong with Wong’s relationship with the Pathway Home staff. Wong told an ex-military friend that he was having conflicts with staff and other VA patients over “racial disparities.” Wong told his stepbrother that he was kicked out of Pathway for carrying a knife. Then Wong told two ex-military friends that he was angry and now homeless. Wong failed the PTSD program because he had PTSD.

Two weeks passed between his dismissal from Pathway and the horrific attack by Wong. During this time Wong must have realized he lost everything. He would lose his armed security permit, and any other permit involving a security background check. If he ever planned to apply to become a city police officer this dismissal would surely disqualify him from consideration and follow him for the rest of professional life.

At lease Wong could fall back on his degree earned in business and computer programming using his veteran educational benefits. Unfortunately, he discovered his earned course credits were not accredited making his academic accomplishments almost totally worthless.

And to add insult to injury, from his point of view, three very successful professional women who do yoga and talk to dolphins that trivialize his illness and ruined his future. One woman was the executive director of Pathway. The other two staffers were professional psychologists, with one starting a new family that he never had. They are rich, and he is a poor loser paying them $700 per month to boot. No empathy. He snapped.

Are you saying that you plan to shoot long distance, with a Mini-14?

Speaking of gun violence. Two Republicans are publicly calling for gun violence in American against minorities and the U.S. government. This is old fashion agitation propaganda by Fox News hoping that a Right-Wing wackco will hear the call and act which is the purpose of such propaganda. These public threats which have been constant this year are also designed to intimidate the America people while the Right-Wing and the Republicans together with NeoLiberals of the Democratic party while legislatively dismantling American Democracy.

For carry you can't go past a Glock.

For a rifle for this purpose 30 calibre might be overkill. Look for a semi-auto .223. Most of the benefits of larger calibres are at unrealistic ranges.

I don't share your fear of the Jan 6 rioters, but if you're that concerned becoming responsibly armed might be a good way to put your mind at ease. It is your right after all.

I agree about too large of a caliber rifle. A .22 can be lethal since the bullet is light and often bounces around inside the target's body.
A law abiding person doesn't need such large military calibers.

I have been watching the old timers criticizing the Mini-14, and M-14 models and then they end with "I love this rifle!" LoL!

The old timers also complain about all the "My gun is bigger!" bragging. They also complain about all the B.S on every little minutia about guns. This is because every aspect of these rifles are marketed by the gun sellers--that's where all this "caliber," "accuracy," and "ammo" chatter comes from--gun market hype. I like Paul Harrell's critique of gun chatter.

The best feature of the M-14 model is the symbolism: this rifle was used by American anti-fascist forces in shooting to pieces Nazis during WWII.

Large military caliber lol. The military primarily uses .223, it is in fact hunters who have use for larger more humane calibers.

They are less useful in crime because the recoil is significantly greater and such calibers lead to heavy, unconcealable firearms.

Which is why almost no crime is committed with 30 caliber cartridges. A negligible quantity of gun crime as a total.

The famous socialist author George Orwell of "Nineteen Eighty Four," (1948) fame was once a police officer for the British Empire. He wrote an interesting short essay titled "Shooting an Elephant," (1936)(pdf.) recounting an experience he had as a police officer. It's the general public that wants brutality, and would call the police weak if they treat criminals with restraint--that's one reason the police are brutal.

Still don't know if you are talking about M-14's or Mini 14's.

Are we discussing a 14-20 digit code to zero in rounds from artillery or aircraft?

They didn’t have machine guns. You don’t even know what a machine gun is. I thought facts matter to you.

So you’re prejudice towards certain gun owners now? If the AR-15 (or joes AR-14) is so under qualified and makes an owner subhuman why is it that it is so preferred by the citizens and it’s not so distant cousin the auto machine gun known as the M-16 is preferred by the military. I also know people that hunt with the AR-15 and kill their game very effectively. There are many reasons one may own an AR-15. Being a dummie is not one of them
