Two saves from Pickford isn't enough.

Penalty kicks, always anti-climatic. Congrats Italy!

    Italia! Italia!
I knew it. I said from the very beginning that we were title contenders and people were underestimating us!!!
    ---------
Congrats England for a clean game, and you gave us a lot of trouble. You are a good side and should do well in Qatar! Sorry Montegriffo. You did very well, may this be a consolation, very deserving silver medal, you were, no doubt, one of the two best teams. Of course the shootout is a lottery, and of course I'm glad that we won, but you are honorable silver medalists.
    ---------
We were decimated by injury. Lost Spinazzola, lost Chiesa, lost Insigne (both were playing great today), and Spina was one of the best players of the tournament.
Chiellini saved us a couple of times. Bonucci did his part. And then Donnarumma rescued us.

    We are the champions!

    Nope, didn't happen.
Congrats Italy. Overall the best team of the tournament.

    My thoughts.
It was a very fair game for a Final. After the first goal Italy started to wear down England. That lead to the equalizer. England was strong enough not to crumble and even came back.
Italy could have finished it in OT.
Southgate screwed it up, by subing those young players in and asking them to do the penalties. Those are very tough even for well seasoned pros, as we were able to watch ( Italy ).

But the Europeans are better getting prepared for the hard playing South Americans, they do not screw around. No matter which team it is.

Dollarumma, had those kids numbers, but they made it easy for him. Still, the man of the game.

Sterling won the Golden Diving Award.

    English crowd, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I also don't understand why Southgate didn't bring Grealish in sooner. That guy is dangerous. Overall Southgate was a coward. Mancini out-coached him.

The ref didn't buy Kane's or Sterling's dives.

Italy had 62% possession, had 20 shots to 6 for England, and held England to a single shot on target - their goal.
Similar to Brazil yesterday (Argentina also only had one shot on target) except that Brazil was unlucky and didn't score the equalizer, out of some miraculous saves by the Argentinian goalie.
    -----------
I could have both of my teams winning these tournaments... Lost one, but won the other one. Good enough.

Congrats on Italy's win, CF.

Even though I picked Brazil to beat Argentina it was great to see Messi finally get that tournament monkey off his back.

It'e been fun, and I expect we'll have more company for the WC - GO USA!!!

    The WORST.

And for the life of me I'll never know why Sterling and Shaw weren't chosen to kick with the first five. When I saw the two of them sitting together after the shootout I almost puked.

Oh, well - England played very well and they can feel good about their chances in next year's WC.

I'm with ya, gnoib - I thought Argentina was the better team, and their performance on defense was one of the best I have ever seen. The way they shut out Brazil was mighty impressive.

I saw a horrific video of hooligans (likely skinheads as their heads were shaved) beating up Italian fans simply for being Italian (no provocation from the Italians) when the fans were exiting the stadium, under the complacent eyes of stewards who did nothing, didn't even call the police. I'm talking about a prolonged moment. A group of skinheads just waiting there for several minutes (more than time enough to arrest them) until an Italian showed up exiting the gates, then violently punching him, throwing him to the ground and kicking him repeatedly, then moving on to the next one. Each assaulted Italian was only alive and able to escape because they moved on to the next one.

At this point I'm withdrawing my nice posts congratulating England. Bunch of savages. I'm glad we beat them on the pitch. Sure, a minority, but that a country allows that, without police presence and without arrests, cancels the fact that it was a minority. It's disgraceful - actually it's full-blown criminal - and England doesn't deserve to ever host a major tournament again.

This, added to the online abuse with monkey emojis and "get out of my country" directed at the three black players who missed penalties, makes of England a country that should be banned from international competition for a couple of years, so that people would lean decent behavior (if they are ever capable of it). Again, no consolation that it's a minority. A country that allows this minority to express themselves this way and engage in unpunished criminal acts against peaceful people just trying to exit the stadium, is as disgraceful as the minority in question.

    Shame on England.

Don't let those hooligans drag you down to their level, CF.

I'm sure the vast majority of folks in England are appalled and horrified at what happened and if the assaults got caught on video it won't be long before the perps get identified and prosecuted.
