When challenged, Fauci lies again, claiming what was funded wasn't really "gain of function" research. His own definition of "gain of function" is read back to him and hilarity ensues.

I recommend you read it before you condemn Fauci.

A couple of key points:
1) This was work done on SARS-Cov from the original SARS outbreak, not on SARS-Cov2, the virus causing covid.
2) Variants of bat SARS-Cov viruses were generated and tested for infectivity of human cell lines.
3) Some of those variants were more infectious than the original bat viruses
4) The last point is interpreted by the Fauci haters as gain of function research.

Why is it not gain of function research? The key word here is the term "rescue". What the researchers did was to rescue infectivity of human cells by inserting parts of SARS-Cov viruses into the bat viruses, making the generation of SARS-Cov by natural recombination events the likely hypothesis.

What they did NOT do was to attempt to make the human SARS-Cov more infective. This would have been gain of function research, but that was not done.

As to Paul, he is just dog whistling to the Fox News crowd, who have Fauci as their favorite boogey man. As he probably predicted, they happily lap up his disinformation.

BTW: This work was all done while Paul was in office and everything was publically available and published. I wonder why Paul didn't raise the issue and put a stop to it before this year? You know why? Because before it was politicized, gain of function research was something that nobody knew or cared about, not even Paul. Now he is looking for a scapegoat to score political points.

 

You miss a point. Funding was supposed to be halted for gain of function research. Fauci denied the governments own definition of gain of function.

 

Not entirely. Risk weighing is a reason as well, especially for children.

That seems to be semantics. They were experimenting with gain of function. Isolating the spike protein and then substituting it into the genome of other variants seems to fit the definition of "gain of function" really well.

It's not semantics. They attempted to rescue the activity of human SARS-Cov by those manipulations from bat ancestors, in an effort to determine the origins of SARS-Cov. They did NOT attempt to make human SARS-Cov more active. The intent is very important in this context, although probably not to those whose sole intent is to smear Fauci.
