Well we can all feel for the Afghans who are afraid for their lives and desperately trying to hitch a ride on an airplane. Sad sight. They claim to be afraid of the Taliban. Well why don't the thousands of them take up arms and fight the Taliban?
I suppose if you watch your army of 300,000 well-trained and well-equipped troops melt away at the mere approach of the Taliban, you'd probably try to get out of there too, if you thought your life was at risk.
I think the problem with the take up arms argument is the average per capita income per year is $580. That doesn't give you a lot of money to buy guns. The only weapons they probably have realistically was either left behind by the US, Russians or what the CIA supplied them with. Probably most of them are in the hands of the Taliban.
It's likely the vast majority of afghans are exhausted by constant civil war for twenty years. I was realizing that a lot of taliban fighters must be in their twenties if not younger. That mean that most of those young people knew only war, and that a large part of the population don't even have a slight idea of how was their country when it was the most developped (in the 70's to 80's).
Because their government was illegitimate and only barely propped up by the American occupying force. That's why all military occupations eventually fail. Oh, and the government was also corrupt. Second, your question really reveals the utter lack of understanding of the situation on the ground there. Their goals are not known to us, and they are not the same as our goals. You might think everyone would want an American-style democracy. You are probably mistaken.
Rumor has it the President of Afghanistan fled the country in cars and a helicopter loaded with cash.
Ah, labeling people that are different from you and you know nothing about cowards, while safely typing on your keyboard, enjoying protections that Afghans can only dream about for the last 20 years. No wonder we cannot win their hearts and minds.
I believe the article said in one of the cars. LOL, no telling where the helicopter went. It sounded like all vehicles were stuffed with cash.
The Afghans need to decide, "Give me liberty or give me death" then take a stand and go down swinging. Even after France surrendered to Germany there was a French underground of saboteurs and spies who fought the Germans.
Apparently there were around 13 civilian owned guns per 100 civilians in Afghanistan in 2017, up from around 5 per 100 in 2007. One would think that would be enough to resist the Taliban had there been a substantial will to do so. It seems to me there was not a substantial will to resist the Taliban. Now the Taliban is confiscating civilian guns. Guns in Afghanistan — Firearms, gun law and gun control (gunpolicy.org)
they are Muslims, the Taliban is Muslims, they never really wanted to go to war with them they were just playing the game until the US left, now they got all our weapons and training
