Thread title edit - I removed "in New York" for space, as everybody knows that's where the UN General Assembly meets

    SNIP
The Taliban have thrown in their bid to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, several news outlets reported, creating a dilemma over who the UN will choose to recognize as the government of Afghanistan.

At the same time, Ghulam Isaczai, the UN ambassador representing Afghanistan's ousted former government, also sent in his delegation list to the secretary-general, a UN spokesperson confirmed per the AP.

Both parties are jockeying to speak during Afghanistan's slated spot as the final speech of September 27, the last day of this year's General Assembly.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/taliban-wants-speak-un-general-041123157.html

This is an interesting choice for the UN to make here.. The Taliban was not recognized by the UN in 1996, although I'm not sure how much of an effort they made at the time..

What does the UN do here? The obvious guess, as mentioned in the article, is with only 5 days to go, they won't decide anything, leaving the former government guy in the seat by default.... for now

Just as a bizarre thought - since the Taliban changed the official name of the country, couldn't the case be made that neither side gets to speak here, since Afghanistan technically doesn't exist anymore and the UN hasn't formally recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan? Technicality, but it would buy time to see how things develop...

At this time I would not recognize them.

Most wouldn't at this time.... Per the OP, do you think the vote will be 9-0 against recognition?

    SNIP
The nine members of the General Assembly's credentials commission - the US, Russia, China, Sweden, the Bahamas, Bhutan, Chile, Namibia, and Sierra Leone - must meet to rule on the seat dispute. Russia and China have been developing relations with the Taliban since its takeover in August.
    ENDSNIP

Russia and China are in that paragraph 2x.... recognition would be exactly the move I would expect from what are other non-democratic regimes..

In a normal situation, not recognizing them would be logical.

    But how would we look?

It was the previous administration that gave them the keys to the country.

Well if the George Bush administration had Colin Powell hand carry a check for $43 million to the Taliban in April 2001 for their excellent achievement in the War On Drugs, why shouldn't they be allowed to speak at the UN while they form a government after their successful revolution?

Unless anyone is planning to do anything about it, the Taliban is the govt of Afghanistan. Pretending otherwise is pointless and ignorant of reality.

...which is why Im certain the UN will not recognize it. They'll keep pretending like what they 'recognize' somehow makes a difference...

I have no idea what the vote count would be at this time since there have been no official statements.

If UN "recognition" is meaningless, why does the Taliban desire it?

This appears to be a matter of legitimacy, not control.

The UN needs to get with the program - get with the times.. We have a new Emirate under the Saudi Fold .. and should hear what they have to say :)

I don't disagree with that.... the more they say on the record to groups like the UN, the easier it might be to hold them to some account...

Only 3 countries recognized the Taliban in 1996... and that was over 5 years.. There's not going to be any rush to recognize them now, and as such, I think the best they are going to get at the UN at this point is guest speaker, not sitting member....

This is different than back then as they have the whole country now .. as opposed to 3/4. The nations that did recognize the Taliban Islamic State were 1) Saudi Arabia - 2) United Arab Emerates 3) Pakistan

This time is also different in that the Taliban are making efforts to put lipstick on a pig .. show a pretty face to the world .. or at least one not so ugly.

Hold to account ? Doubt it .. folks yammering at the UN rarely do what they say - US being one of the worst offenders.

Didn't say the UN would hold anybody to account, but statements made TO or AT the UN can certainly be used by other countries when deciding if they want to deal with the "new" Taliban.

Frankly, I think it's interesting that a rogue state like the IEA even wants to appear before the UN.... that's pretty decent lipstick...

I get that, but in the case of international policies and relations, which the UN is concerned with, what good is dealing with the 'legitimate' govt of Afghanistan that has no influence in Afghanistan and isn't going to? They might as well have you or I seated as the delegation from Afghanistan for all the good it'll do. If there was a plan in the works for them to regain power that would be one thing... but there isn't.

I understand what you're saying, and the previous government made itself irrelevant, so it has legitimacy issues, too. However, beyond the issue of legitimacy is the issue of the Taliban's ties to al Qaeda, which haven't changed over the course of the past 20 years according to the UN. The only leverage, if it even qualifies as such, individual nations and the international community have in this regard is recognition, so I think it's up to the Taliban to earn it.

In the final analysis, none of this amounts to a hill of beans. The UN is worthless, the Taliban didn't give a damn what the UN thought and said the last time they were in power, and only a handful of people give a damn what the Taliban think and say now that they're back in power.

Not about the UN holding folks to account .. just saying what folks say in the UN -one may take with a teaspoon of salt.

Yes it is very intersting. - showing the Taliban are making some good moves - acting "less rogue" I would say.

Think about it .. " "defeating" " the US was a Major victory - They have some moral authority among the people - a whole lot who are Islamist - They did keep a fairly good lid on things while we were evacuating our people .. which was smart - next smart step would be to hold off on the head chopping for a little while .. till they get more entrenched .. Then they can graduate up to full Saudi Style Strict Sharia .. resume the lashing, head chopping and perhaps the occasional crucifixion.

This 21-year old boy from Saudi Arabia to be crucified like Jesus

They desire the clout more than anything. They don't really care about the meetings, other than the prestige of being recognized. It's what Democrats thought of the NK photo op, except this is actually real. They're posturing.

(Clarification: I said that the photo op didn't mean much for the NK regime, however I believe it means alot for the Taliban.)

Biden is making deals with the Taliban to get back our citizens/hostages that he left behind.

Perhaps they are ready to represent the type of leadership the Biden Administration and Democrats truly desired for the people of Afghanistan.

I mean, all sarcasm aside if they become decent enough not to need US intervention, that's a win for the US.

Wow... I liked that... "Decent enough" is probably too high a bar for the Taliban, but I'm sure we'd settle for "Not completely crappy"..

How about the UN immediately respond and tell them they do not allow terrorist groups and those who commit summary executions on the street and hold foreign citizens hostage to speak or even come on the premises.
The government in exile is still the recognized government.

Surely you don't think they should have ANY kind of recognized legitimate presence at the UN or anywhere do you? Do you believe they are the legitimate government of Afghanistan?

'You're not recognized until you split with Al'qeda' is totally justified. But they'd have to actually make that a point.

An organization that just FORCEFULLY and violently overthrew a government wants to be recognized as the head of state of that country?

    Uh. Nah.
