Reminds me the first time I ever stumbled on a scurry of black squirrels. Thought they were baby skunks so I just reversed course and scurried off myself.

Worse than that they can eat the songbird's eggs.
They get culled every now and then here on the farm.
Bloody things have virtually replaced our indigenous red squirrels.
The reds have gone from all but a couple of English counties.

One squirrel climbed under our car’s hood and did quite a lot of damage to the tune of several hundred dollars. My husband calls them furry tailed rats.

I have noticed they will bite into a pecan eat a bite or two and leave the pecan. Wasteful little devils.

    Any idea what species?

And you're right the best thing to do is give them their space. Something like 70% of snake bites happen when someone is trying to molest or kill the snake and of that 70% something like 40% involve alcohol go figure.

Changing to subject from snakes to mushrooms. Here is the picture of some mushrooms that I am trying to identify. They look like chanterelles but not enough for me to cook and serve.. Anyone know what they are?[IMG]

I have several pecan trees but just let mother nature have at it. Same for the persimmon trees (which are vile).

I would have pecans everywhere thanks to the fairy diddles hoarding in some of my plant beds. Couldn't tell you how many of them I have to pull up every year. Co-existing with mother nature requires work.

Clueless here. You could always cook one up and offer it up to one of the squirrels. And watch. (joking!)

According to the internet, fresh picked chanterelles smell like apricots.

They could be old chanterelles that have opened up I suppose.
    They're usually more trumpet shaped.

I tried to make these smell like apricots but they don't smell much like anything. The gills on it look more solid and do not flatten out or break when touched. They look more like part of the mushroom....but still not enough evidence of being harmless for me to eat. The mushrooms in the picture grow under an oak tree which is a plus....but .....I am a coward on exotic eats.

Yeah, but would you eat them? The gills on these are like the real chantrelles but I still don't trust them to be real.

    I wouldn't eat anything unless I was 100% certain.
False chanterelles are more orange underneath and yellowy when you split the stem. Real chanterelles are white inside the stem.
False chanterelle aren't toxic but some people have experienced hallucinations.

Most all squirrels have attitudes.Plus they are bullies when it comes
to hogging Bird feed. But they can also make for a Pet.One's pet.
    Like in the Great classic - It's a Wonderful Life - { 1946 }
and Uncle Billy { Thomas Mitchell }.
I remember as a kid living in our first home and my Mom
freaking out Big Time.A squirrell managed to get into the house down the
Chimney.I think she may have called the cops.I can't remember.
But she became instantly unravelled.Almost as fast as the time one
    of the Nuns called our 2nd home in early evening { after Din-din }
with some Bad news concerning ...
    Me,me,me,me,Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !.
About somethin' I done did on the school bus.
To this day I never learned what I did.Just that the Parents of a
child called the nun about something I did.According to some Child on the Bus.
Kinda reminds me of how President Trump was treated.

Such the Kidder you be.But don't overdo it.
Mite end up like the former Hollywood star ...
Margo Kidder. She fell victim to extreme paranoia.
Started as she was writing her autobiography in the mid-1990's.
Her computer came down with a virus. She developed Bipolar disorder
and she eventually went slightly nuts. Not the kind of nuts that attract
    squirrels.But then I never interviewed a squirrel.They ain't good listeners.

You gots like some video of dat.Squirrels also depend on their ability to
hide nuts and have upwards of a 95% recall as to where.
From a tree trunk nearby to wherever. They utilize many hiding spots.
Since they rely on those to make it thru a winter.
I had the same dilemna last fall and winter.I had to find a new
Message Board to store my posts.Since of me 6 month ban.
