Okay - why I have opted to put this thread into current events is because of a report about to impact intersex people within Australia and maybe the world
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-17/intersex-reform-sex-normalisation-surgery-children/100538054
    So what is “intersex”
I recommend people take the time to read the full story I have just posted excerpts highlighting the key points.
The link below is to the Medline description of the four key “types”

    https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001669.htm

The core issue here is of course, consent. Should a child have corrective surgery if they have an “intersex” issue or should the child be allowed to develop as they are until they themselves decide

Are they going to ban transgender surgeries on minors too?

This is not about banning but about consent

Semantics. Results are the same. If they ban an intersex procedure being done because a child cannot give consent then shouldn't they also ban procedures for transgender children for the same reason?

Part of the "surgeries" he's talking about includes hormone treatments. Like it or not that IS a medical procedure. He was just not listing every single thing done. There is no need to. The point is being made. Whether you get it or not is not relevent.

Since when is consent important to lefties? They are usually on the side of imposing their beliefs on others.

SHE is talking a specific set of problems that have been, up until now, treated by those who “acted in the best interests” of the child. The commission has just recommended that where possible those decisions are delayed until the child can decide for themselves

As someone who was born transgender I can empathize to a degree with those whose genitals are incorrectly assigned at birth.

In essence what I was born with is a form of gender intersex only it was not visible at the time.

So delaying treatment of all types makes a lot of sense until the individual can make the determination if they want to have any type of medical intervention.

At one stage society would have maltreated those who were born intersex but society has evolved and now we should no longer be "playing god" and imposing genitalia without having sufficient information as to what choice the individual themselves would make.

Don't be absurd. Of course it's about banning. That's why the word "ban" is in the (your) thread title.

False. This person is 17, and had gender reassignment surgery:

    https://cbs6albany.com/news/nation-...-youngest-to-have-gender-reassignment-surgery

Happened at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NOT in my imagination. Eat your crow.

That is a single isolated EXCEPTION and NOT the RULE!

That you STOOPED to using a PF Rule VIOLATION exposes the VACUITY of your position.

    Sad!

One exception is all that it takes to disprove your foolishly sweeping claim ("NOT happening ANYWHERE"). You even capitalized it for emphasis: "ANYWHERE". You were wrong about that, weren't you?

    https://news.trust.org/item/20200214062508-olbjd/

All you have is a SINGLE ANECDOTE!

Furthermore her surgery occurred ONE MONTH before she turned 18.

    https://cbs6albany.com/news/nation-...-youngest-to-have-gender-reassignment-surgery

    https://twitter.com/emily_tressa/status/1162939984921407488?lang=en

If you want to PRETEND that EXCEPTION negates the FACTS that 18 is the AGE of CONSENT for gender reassignment surgery then by all means go right ahead.

Just don't HURT yourself when you are PATTING yourself on your back, m'kay?

Also, in what appears to be developing as a pattern for you, you are wrong about this also. The article (indeed published in July) says: "Last month, she became one of the youngest patients in the country to undergo gender reassignment surgery."

You understand that reports on things can be published after they occur (sometimes significantly afterwards), right?

What is SAD is that YOU believe that something that occurred LESS than a MONTH under the AGE of consent NEGATES the WORLDWIDE standard is anything other than an EXCEPTION that PROVES the RULE.

You're still wrong about the timing of this event. The person's surgery happened sometime in June, their birthday was in August. That does not add up to "LESS than a MONTH". Facts are hard, huh?

Despite Derideo_Te's sad attempts at deflection, my question above was a real one. @Bowerbird , do you know if gender reassignment surgery (or for that matter the more common hormone treatments) are recommended to be banned as well? They would seem to qualify, given the quote above. And what is meant by "until they are old enough to consent"? Is that 18? Sometimes 17? Or even younger?

They are less than 1/2 of 1% of the population.... and Leftists want to create laws that hurt women, children, and burden the rest of us for this extreme outlier.

This is a complicated issue. I can see the good arguments on both sides, for and against intersex operations. One problem is that children can't legally consent until they are 16 to 18 years of age. Some of the intersex children need this treatment as soon as possible to prevent life-threatening side effects. And, generally, once a child reaches puberty it's already too late. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery to adjust the physical appearance of sex organs to one particular gender is traumatizing, a waste of money, and in this case pointless and it is probably why so many intersex people are angry, regret having the procedure, and wish it didn't happen.

It's not really pointless or a waste of money if it helps improve the quality of the recipient's life. Surely some people who are born intersex experience a net benefit in their lives from those cosmetic surgeries.

I totally agree and support this.

With just a little bit of doubts and hesitancy.

Many of those "sex normalisation" surgeries practically amount to genital mutilation or castration.

But on the other hand some parallels can be drawn here to the issue of gender change hormone/surgical treatments in young teens. The sooner a procedure is done, the easier it will be and it will give a better outcome if that procedure will eventually be done.

That is, many of the same arguments being used in favor of teenagers being allowed to undergo sex change procedures are the same ones that can be used to support gender normalisation procedures on intersex babies.

And how ironic because most of the people who support one of those do not support the other. (I would expect there would be a deep Progressive / Conservative divide in opinion)

I mostly oppose the concept of sex change procedures in young teenagers, and so, to be consistent, I also have to mostly oppose the concept of sex normalisation procedures in babies or very young children.
