Sure seems like they stood up for themselves and walked away. I would do the same considering how teachers are treated. Heck, the State of Florida even cut funding for them.

I think he wants then to stop teaching.

Don't let the door hit you in the Biden! We'll replace them with folks that aren't trying to indoctrinate our children into philosophies of hate and racism, subjecting our daughters to rape and sodomy in the bathrooms and trying to get America's Moms and Dads labeled enemies if the state if they dare object to the madness.

If you're doing HS and CC, my hat is off to you. I'm in NC and I retired two years ago. Things did change a lot over the years, but most teachers just try to figure out a way to adjust to the changes and keep doing what they love to do. In many ways, I miss it, but I'm really glad I didn't have to do any of the online stuff like last year. What a nightmare! Anyway, keep up the good work.

It's really great that we live in a country where it's ok to have different opinions, but it would be really interesting to hear what all those criticizing education would say after they spent a year in the classroom. Having to experience all that teachers experience would be something interesting to discuss after that experience.

Any new changes taking effect this year?

I might add, since the topic is teachers quitting, that one factor that i haven't seen discussed is the students.
There seems to be a prevalent attitude of lethargy, or apathy, on the part of the students. When a teacher is facing 50 or 60 percent or higher of students who just don't care about learning and the teachers are pressed to get through to these students, it creates a pressure point. In my huimble, localized, opinion, the teachers are expected to inspire the students, but are faced with the reality that you aren't going to get through to some of the students. The stress of failure plays a part in the retention rate of teachers. I had to deal with it, but being a college instructor made it a little easier. If I worked for the local high school system, I would feel a lot more stress. Some of the kids are being passed on because so much stress is put on success rates when some of the students basically refuse to do the work. It all boils down to money from the state, and getting the numbers.
Just for some clarity, the state I'm in is mostly republican, but considered purple. and the school system is in a very rural area so I don't think that it's a partisan problem. Parents need to understand their role in the development and inspiration of their kids, not just leave it to the teachers to handle. I get that some students don't have an ideal home environment, but the pressure on the teachers to correct that is very wearing.
In short, parents need to step up a little also. Most are concerned, but busy with their own lives. I get that. With the right attitude, it is managable. It's easy to feel pressured, though.

Totally agree with that. One thing I noticed is that more and more, the parents flew into a rage if you called them to let them know their kids were not putting any effort into learning. Phones, Google--no actual need to learn things when you can just look them up. Years ago, we used to take the phones from kids if they had they had them out in class. Parents did not like that at all.

Not many big changes, trying to find normal again.
Online wasn't good. At first it seemed awesome, get paid to work from home?
But the student success rate cratered and it felt like I was at work all the time.
Glad to be back face to face.
Check to see if your local community college could use a part time instructor. Most do from what I hear.
    What did you teach?

If I was still teaching, I would quit. I never needed the income, anyway.
    Pure propaganda. It's not believable.

You got to be kidding me!! ADHA was around in the 50's and most likely in the beginning of time; just that we didn't know it at the time and had no way to recognize it in scientific terms. The Kids were just thought to be "slow" and shoved into a corner.

I don't think anyone could pin this one on Trump/Putin; in fact it wouldn't surprise me if Trump has ADHA as well, just that he wasn't diagnosed with it. After all he has the vocabulary and learning skills of a sixth grader or at least that what most people feel.

You think collateral damage from the teachers going against parent would leave us with an entire generation of children who no longer respect teachers??? So instead of whining about how terrible the schools are, pull your children out of school and home school them; that way you can instill them with the values that matter the most to you.

Spoken out of true ignorance. 7 hours?? Hah! Are you aware that many teachers put in more than 7 hours per day? When do you think they grade papers? Set up their lesson plans? Stay after school to meet with parent-teacher conferences?, staff meetings? Oh yes and some teachers don't get off the summers because they teach summer school as well.

So blame everything on the teachers union; my god blame the teachers union because they want a safe workplace for their members, how unreasonable. I have an idea, how about firing some of the schools administrators, you know the one that hire bad teachers after all they are the one's controlling things for the most part. All the teacher's union is doing is representing the teachers, which is their legal duty under the law.

No, certainly in the UK, teachers work long hours, I used to be married to one. I'm not aware of any teacher saying, "It's a great profession, I'd recommend you go into it". A young person set their heart on training and being a teacher and the vast majority don't know what they're getting into.

The underpaid part means they don't get paid overtime so the long hours technically reduces their hourly rate by easily a third.

I don't think there is anything wrong with his learning skills, his political skills as practiced in Washington are a bit unsophisticated. He says some odd things from time to time but in most cases they are distorted and often twisted by the media and that was the version he was judged on.

Kids with ADHD back in the day were often just considered brats.

They are taking down the government and the American way of life in order to install their vision of what those things should be. Perhaps you hadn't noticed.

Public schooling as we know it should be dissolved. The system has been broken for decades. Placing stress on a system that isn't up to code will break it farther.

    9-12 English.

We played with online learning in the sense that we made lessons students could access if they were out sick or if we were going to be out for a workshop or out sick. And the lessons were online so parents could follow them. The students really didn't take any of that serious. Even in the classroom, it was almost impossible to keep them from playing games, getting on social media, and watching porn. We had filters and screen monitors, but they figured out how to get around that stuff in no time. I'm really glad I didn't have to go through what the rest of you all did.

Our district partnered up with the local community college and essentially moved what used to be AP classes to the college. That started the year I retired, and I don't know how well it's working. Hope things are going well for you.

Re-read this and you really hit on one of the core issues plaguing education. I also think parents need to step up and take part of the responsibility for learning, and students need to be held accountable for their share. There is an assumption that it's all up to the teachers. It's not all the teacher's fault the students aren't learning. But if the public insists on dumping all those teachers, I'm sure that those positions will easily be filled by highly qualified experts.

To be fair, it's really hard to get in all the lesson plans. Let's see, first period is Marxism 101 (how bout that Karl?), then we have Destruction of Government (AP), Socialism 101, followed by Xenophobia by Numbers.
I'm all worn out at the end of the day! Then I have to make signs for the upcoming protest for ......... something.
