I don't think it was an actual "live round." I heard an actor on the radio today say that they referred to squib loads on set as live rounds since they are still somewhat dangerous. I doubt they would need to load actual real ammunition on a movie set.

agree. He is a jerk........but one does not wish that kind of"accident " on anyone. Harsh to live with....

I just don't understand how the gun had live ammunition .........or was that lethal........... in what is supposed to be a "prop gun"...........

(but then my "gun knowledge is very limited )

No, the do not point loaded guns at people every day on TV. I’m surprised the use of guns on movie sets don’t come with about 2000 pages of federal, state, local and OSHS regulations. (Don’t say it)

If I’m an actor who’s going to have a gun pointed at me, I’d want that gun in my possession right up until they shoot the scene.

“There are a lot of working pieces when it comes to firing guns on set," said Karl Weschta, the vice president of weapons for Independent Studio Services in Los Angeles. ISS provides props and weapons for television and movie productions.

In addition to safety lessons and practice sessions, actors are told to keep a safe distance from other crew members when handling a prop gun. Filmmakers often use movie magic so it looks as if an actor is pointing a gun directly at another character — when they're actually pointing the weapon at an angle or off-center.

"It's really rare when a gun is actually directly pointed at someone," Weschta said.

It was a live round, or at least that’s what’s being reported. But then again, we saw how reporters thought ear plugs were rubber bullets. Remember that one?

The bullet Alec Baldwin fired from a prop gun first struck director of photography Halyna Hutchins — then exited her body and hit film director Joel Souza’s clavicle on the set of the upcoming film “Rust,” according to a report Friday.

"...or at least that’s what’s being reported"

Given previous reporting by the media on firearms, I'm going to wait on that.

I don’t have all the fancy stuff you do, all I have, or I should say, all I got for my kid is a CZ .22 with a scope. No matter who shoots it everything misses slightly to the right. We had the dealer double and triple check the set up and he said all was good. But we were still missing to the right at around 15 yards with no wind. A few times we had some border patrol argents around and they let us shoot their ARs with their sights at the same distance and we didn’t have a problem missing to the right, our misses were random high, low, right and left.

That's not how any prop master treats a fire arm on set after Brandon Lee got killed. That's not how the insurance companies demand prop guns be treated.
And when you shoot someone and they die as anything but a cop, you at least catch a manslaughter charge.

Well, I can't stand him, but, I wish all these folks were not dealing with this. It strikes me that everyone referred to this gun as a "prop-gun", it was not a "prop-gun" it was a firearm being used as a prop. I think that viewing this as a "prop gun" rather than a firearm is part of what led to this tragic killing.

Another time that seems very high risk for especially folks who use fire arms for a living, like law enforcement officers, is shooting themselves while cleaning the gun. I have long thought it's related to the fact that they view this a household cleaning task, rather than a firearms handling task, so they don't fully bring their firearms safety skills to the task.

A laser bore round (approximately $15) will help with all of that. Put it in, see where the bullet would go with the laser and then dial your sight into that spot.

Here is an example. I would be careful with compatibility and shop around.

Also... this style works even easier.

But... I've not used it before.

And the anti gun weenies have never had firearms training, and don’t know which end the bullet comes out.

Whoever, in the prop department, that got the gun ready for use would be the one to shoulder the blame.

I can't say I've ever shot and killed anyone, yet these pro-gun control Hollywood elites sure have.

A full investigation should occur and even the slightest hint of wrongdoing by Baldwin should see him face manslaughter charges.

What a terrible and preventable tragedy. Not a fan of Baldwin, but my gosh, how terrible to live with this for the rest of your life.

I think this is an appropriate time to point out that Hollywood glorifies/promotes gun violence, creates violent movies as a form of gun porn (John Wick movies etc.), desensitizes people to gun violence -- then complains about gun violence and wants to ban ordinary citizens from owning guns. Of course Hollywood has no moral or ethical issue with a movie studio owning guns. Baldwin needs to do a little real time. This will give him some perspective, if he ever acts in a prison movie.

100% agree with all of this.

When I clean any gun. It is a firearm handling task and is treated with complete safety. Every gun is presumed loaded each and every time I pick it up, even if I have already checked it.

The gun on the set, if able to discharge a round is not a prop.

Could be the ammo, trigger pull, or scope parallax.

CZ .22s are known for being accurate.

I learned gun safety and shot .22 rimfire guns while in 5th grade at a YMCA Summer Camp. This camp was in MD so probably no shooting or gun safety would be taught today. Note to liberals. If you want your kids to be safe around guns and not end up like Alex, enroll them at some point in a basic gun safety class.

The first rule of gun safety. ALL GUNS ARE LOADED.

He wasn't filming a scene at the time so I doubt he gets off scot-free. I mean he won't do 50 years up state, but if the reports are true that he pointed the gun at someone, I could see him getting charged with involuntary manslaughter which maxes at 18 months and $5K fine. Looking at their statute, that seems about like the most they could convict him of:

    "
    B. Involuntary manslaughter consists of manslaughter committed in the commission of an unlawful act not amounting to felony, or in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death in an unlawful manner or without due caution and circumspection. https://law.justia.com/codes/new-mexico/2018/chapter-30/article-2/section-30-2-3/

Whoever commits involuntary manslaughter is guilty of a fourth degree felony.
