    HYPERLINK has full story

    snip

Lawmakers in the U.K. are considering making it illegal to post certain content online that causes "emotional, psychological, or physical harm to the likely audience" and punishing violators with jail time

    snip

    a couple of comments

First, how in the heck does an on-line post cause physical harm to someone?

Next, do we really need the online police to make sure that people are not "offended" by what they read?

the UK has gone bat-crap crazy

    1) I think there’s many fruits and nuts who read something on the net and fall for it hook, line and sinker.

    2) coming to America.

Do you remember Colin Powell's test tube? Because of it, America had killed 1 million people.

This kind of reporting is becoming common. They use words like "considering" and "in talks", to make it sound like they are serious about it, when in fact such measures don't have a prayer of becoming reality.

Trump's was considering making ISP's legally liable for all users posts

that would have been the end of social media as we know it

every post would have to be queued and approved before displaying online

and of course the ISP would have to error on the side of caution or risk rich people taking them up in court, free sites could not afford that

I guess if you post Joe smith is a pedo and Joe smith gets assaulted by someone who read that or Joe kills himself, you caused them physical harm with your post.

Beyond that, I guess it depends on the nuance. If the threshold is "the likely audience" it may be just limited to you are only prosecuted if say you go to a gay message board and start calling everybody the F word. IDK. The devil is in the details.

It would be easier to place the overly sensitive people in solitary confinement so they can feel safe!

If trolling people on Facebook was a crime, I would currently be serving multiple life sentences...

I have watched videos of trans folks who scream their lives are in danger if you don't call them by the appropriate pronoun.... I think it's a mental defect in some folks. This is what the "Great Reset" is all about.

I can't imagine how they want a court to determine what is a troll.

Seems the social media platforms allow the trolls to violate the terms of service and user agreements. Why not hold the social medias and other outlets accountable for letting trolls violate the terms? Delete the troll. Simple.

trolling is serious entertainment for some people, all across the globe. Sad, but true.

Sounds like one more indirect attack on free speech and freedom of the press for casual internet use.

Some people are emotionally traumatized by nearly anything.

The threat of jail time will not stop it. Users will just get more sophisticated hiding their tracks. If these entities were truly serious about trolling, they would ban the user, but they seem to neglect to do that. Is it because troll behavior drives clicks and views?

In actuality, they will ban the user through indirect court action and orders from a judge.
It's very common when people have charges against them that a court will threaten them with jail if they post anything or use the internet. In fact this has almost become routine in many types of situations. Maybe people do not realise that.

Politicians never consult with the public before passing these things.

There have been many laws that people naively thought would never pass, but they did.

It's also often much easier to get a law passed than to remove that law.

If they are "discussing" something with any level of seriousness, then now is the time for the public to get vocal and push back against it.

Of course we can't know for sure exactly what chance it has of passing, but better safe than sorry.

Trolls have been around for decades, they are not after the trolls. They'll use this to shut down criticism of government, politicians, bureaucrats, police, big pharma etc...basically calling these people corrupt will land YOU in jail, not them...the corrupt will make sure you cannot expose their crimes.

To me this is an "exit" signal...certainly will be spending much less time online.
