There's an easy way to determine whether their complaints are legitimate.

Are there any public policies or institutionalised measures which favour one race over others? Could be clubs, schools, universities, community or social groups, laws, allocation of public funds, etc etc.

Since we both know the answer is "yes, there are many", then those complaints are not just legitimate, but overdue and understated. We outlawed racial discrimination decades ago.

I didn't say anything about "institutionalized", but now that you mention it I'd say the voting is an example. Blacks and latinos face more barriers to cast their votes than whites. According to a study by Public Religion Research Institute, they face such barrier twice as often as whites, and more bills are passed to add even more barriers. The number of polling places in black neighborhoods have been reduced to a point where people wait 5+ hours to vote, while in typical white neighborhood it takes no time at all. Georgia passed a bill which makes it illegal to pass water and food to people waiting in these long lines. Florida might have passed the same law, but I'd have to check. In 2016 cycle after WI passed new voter ID requirements, the number of Democrats who didn’t vote because they lacked proper ID exceeded Trump’s margin of victory, and that the biggest decreases in turnout were in black neighborhoods. After the elections Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, a Republican, said to conservative radio host Vicki McKenna that Sen. Johnson won reelection and Trump won the State because of the new voter id restriction.

Maybe there are white people who feel victimized, but I'm not feeling it. Not in the slightest. Even if I felt it, I'm the kind of person who would take the bull by the horns and deal with it as opposed to whining about it. That's why I never feel like a victim, but as a winner.

I tell you though....if I had to wait in line for 5 hours to vote, I wouldn't bother with it. I'd go home and watch Netflix and say "the hell with it".

    1) If it's not institutionalised, then it's not relevant. That would make it merely personal, private feelings about racism. And you will never be able to demonstrate actual barriers to voting, because there are no laws preventing people from moving away from areas with limited polling places, if they can't bear the thought of a five hour wait. There are no ACTUAL barriers, in other words. And voter ID laws apply to everyone equally, regardless of race. Any difficulty encountered in the quest to vote is therefore also an individual, private, and personal matter.

    2) So you think people shouldn't 'whine' about perceived racism?

    3) And there isn't a law in the land which could stop you moving elsewhere, or simply choosing not to vote.

But that's the ONLY kind we can do something about. Everything else is personal, and none of yours or my business.

In the meantime, what do you say about the institutionalised racism happening RIGHT now, in many sectors?

PS: those white folk who are pointing to the as a breach of the very foundation principles and laws of non-discrimination (after fighting so hard for same in the 20thC), should be our heroes.

There's no question that human beings are perhaps the worst thing that ever happened to planet earth, but as a species- we have to work with what we have, including our faults and weaknesses. It's really discouraging to see people embrace those weaknesses and faults as desirable. If you recognize the exceptional qualities of Sowell, you probably also recognized Colin Powell as an exceptional man. Not a parallel to Sowell, rather exceptional in his own way. I stated here a couple weeks ago that if he had run for president as many encouraged him to do, I would have voted for him over anyone else at the time. Men of exceptional character shine, regardless of color.

Sadly- exceptional men like this of any race are too rare. I do feel that every citizen hat holds up his end and doesn't add to the burdens of others deserves credit and respect, but we need these more of these exceptions who model the best qualities, demonstrate what we are capable of. I don't see enough people modeling those characteristics today, and see too much coverage of the whiners and detractors, too little of the builders and nurturers. I feel that the black community particularly needs role models like these, but now, Powell is gone, Sowell is quite old. Where are their replacements?

I think America needs them, period. Their African heritage probably adds an additional quality to their "American-ness", which is what makes them ideal Modern Americans. Just as the Norse origins of some white Americans adds an additional quality, and native American origins add yet another. There is less ground between these groups than appears (as demonstrated in the attached), so it makes sense that America was/is Great.

I'm unclear how you draw a line from Sowell to Powell, unless it's simply a racial thing. Sowell is genuinely brilliant and did a lot of pioneering work in applying econometric tools to social science long before the Freakanomics guys joined in.

Powell on the other hand, doesn't seem to be exceptional at all.

Politics. Blacks are relatively indifferent to helping poor whites, and poor whites are three or four times as numerous as poor blacks. Helping everyone would be many times more expensive.
Whites did the categorizing long ago. White racism still negatively impacts minorities, especially blacks. Black racism impacts whites, but not nearly as much.
    An absurd generalization.
    Poor Larry.

Liberals don't like him because of his politics, including indifference to climate change, lack of support for social programs and pandering to upper-income folks by resisting using the tax system to redistribute income. It has nothing to do with his race.

Call it what you will, but the longstanding discrimination by whites against blacks is still a problem.

No, it isn't. It's ancient history.

You cannot demonstrate ONE piece of anti-black institutional discrimination ... but you can find many which are anti-white.

We all live "race" in this country. Claims that liberals are more racist than conservatives isn't supported by any realistic history of the United States.

Anything that causes eligible voters to walk away from a long line restricts access. It's not the responsibility of citizens to overcome efforts to steal elections.
Reducing polling stations in minority communities with the intention of voter suppression is racist.

The right you're talking about isn't much interested in how past unequal treatment impacts people today.
Absurd claims about both "left" and "right."
So, how would "the right" (you) go about fixing situations today impacted by past wrongs?[/QUOTE]

That could only be true if they were kept in those areas by force.

As it happens, I live in a wealthy white area, and our polling places have been reduced over the past few years - while in an area not far away, where there are far more migrants and a lower income demographic, polling places have been increased. The reasons behind these practices are almost ALWAYS practicality/cost.

Someone determined to vote, cannot be stopped by 'inconvenience', either way. Over my adult lifetime I've had to jump through hoops many times to vote .. and we have mandatory voting. By any measure, that's much more 'discriminatory' than a voluntary system.

I love Heilung. Krigsgaldr is my favorite. I could listen to their music all day, along with some Wardruna. And Eluveitie when I'm in the mood for some heavier stuff.

What happened to all the money Africa made from selling its own people into slavery? Did they just blow it?

You know many Americans are of mixed heritage too. My great grandmother on mothers side was Kiowa Commanche, so I'm 1/8 native American indian. The only impact that has had on my life is to create a curiosity to know more about the people she came from. The rest- European on mothers side. My father was adopted and no records could be found, so that bloodline was sealed. The family that adopted him came from Germany long ago. I've often thought that the real differences that matter were character, values and conduct, everything else is has to do with our psychology, how we think and see each other. That means that we could indeed all get along- but to do so, there would have to be a mutual recognition of common values. Maybe someday.

Powell was a practical man, a hands-on player, not so much a philosopher or intellectual like Sowell- but had character on a level far above most. Both men demonstrated things we could all benefit from. Powell of course would be subject to much more criticism just do to his official positions. I felt he was very exceptional, a stand-out compared to those around him.

If you have to move because laws targeting minority districts make it too hard to vote, then the barrier is very real.

Whiners will whine. I didn't say they shouldn't do it.

Thank you for proving my point.

    I just did.

Someone tried arguing that affirmative action is an example, but according to your view its not a real barrier, because there is nothing to stop the whites from moving to areas where there are no blacks to take their job.

The BLM overplay their hand, and resort to unacceptable behavior, but people who say that racial discrimination doesn't exist are in denial.
