In a tit for tat response to American initiatives, more American diplomats will be leaving Moscow next year. This has been going on for years, and if it keeps up there will be no more diplomatic relations between the two countries. Even now, both countries wonder how they will run their embassies. So what goes?

Well the problem is Ukraine. Zelentsky refuses to negotiate directly with the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics as specified in the Minsk II agreement signed by Poroshenko and accepted by the UN. Putin insists it is a Ukrainian domestic affair and refuses to be drawn into it, yet the US and EU are trying to force Vladimir Putin to have direct talks with Zalensky.

In the meantime, Kiev, by refusing to comply and follow through on anything in the agreement, has forced Russia to take over more and more of the banking, pensions, trade, etc. of the two Republics, so that they are now almost totally integrated with Russia.

Russian officials said Wednesday that a number of U.S. Embassy staff will have to leave the country before January, a new twist in an escalating diplomatic spat.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a briefing the decision will affect diplomats who had spent more than three years in the country and would be a tit-for-tat response to the U.S. sending 55 Russian diplomats' home.

Russia's ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov said last week that 27 Russian diplomats and their families are being expelled from the United States. "We are facing a serious staff shortage," he said.

This is how I see the problem. Ukraine is not one country; it is two separate cultures that were united by Lenin for administrative reasons. Half the population leans towards Russia, and the other half towards Europe.

Yanukovich for all his faults was the legally elected leader, and represented the Russian half which had beneficial trade agreements with Russia. They were the ones carrying the rest of the country.

Anyway, the Western Ukrainians who were put in power by Nuland and company, want the rich land, mines and industries of the Donbas region, but not the Russian inhabitants. This is why Vladimir Putin said that if Ukraine attacks, it will become a humanitarian issue and they will have to get involved.

I sometimes feel a bit conflicted about Putin. On the one hand he is a brutal dictator, and on the other he often points out the stark hypocrisy of the USA, daring to speak truths that other world leaders are afraid to.

Just curious but why are you so focused on that part of the world? Do you have family and close friends living there?

Lucky for them. What US citizens would want to live in Moscow?

No, I don't know Russians and have never been there. I did read Sharon Tennyson's account of Vladimir Putin, and she did say that Putin was known for his integrity at a time when all the other bureaucrats were getting rich on their seats and I haven't come across anything that Vladimir Putin has said or done that would contradict her assessment.

What he has done for Russia since he took over is short of miraculous. Other nations should be so lucky.

A brutal dictator? That's a new one. You do realize that Vladimir Putin was voted into office by a large majority, and has maintained his popularity. Anyway I respect him because he loves his country and refuses to bow to liberal western impositions - yet unlike some other European nations, he does it without their extreme nationalism and intolerance.

If it wasn't so, there would be no way he could hold together a Federation that consists of different faiths, and 123 languages and ethnicities - and especially when there are so many attacks from the US to split up the Russian Federation.

If Russia wasn't a democracy, we would love them the same way we love the other nations under our control. It's because Putin does what is best for his people, and not what's best for the US that he's being demonized and hated.

Partly, yes. But he's also not exactly functioning in anything resembling a real democracy. The USA supports many dictators around the world. I agree with you that Putin isn't one of them because he dares to oppose the USA. I admire that about him.

Putin wants to have a meeting with Biden, and it's probably over Ukraine because the situation is very serious. According to Moscow, Ukraine is “pulling heavy equipment and personnel” into the area. Right now there are 125 thousand Ukrainian troops along the border of the two Republics. This is half the Ukrainian army.

Every time Washington or Nato gives arms to Ukraine it tends to encourage Kiev. Moscow has given them a warning, that if they attack the two Republics, it won't be the same as the last time when Putin stopped the Donbas militias from going further into Ukraine by closing the Russian border so they couldn't get medical supplies.

Putin said that if Kiev attacks, the Russian army will enter Ukraine and go past the demarcation line and free all the lands and people that were once part of Russia. Ukraine will lose Kharkov and Odessa and will end up a poor land locked nation.

I think Putin wants to convey this message to Biden, since Biden from what I read, is not part of the Clinton neo con faction that's been pushing for a war between Ukraine and Russia.

It's no colder than Chicago (and certainly no colder than the hellhole Dakotas). I've been to all 4 cities and Moscow beats them all.

If Nazi Germany had been a real democracy we might have loved them too. But they weren't. They had a leader who did what HE thought was best and wrecked the world. Tojo thought he was doing best for Japan too. No democracy about it though. Kinda like today with Putin. You can have a DICTATORIAL MASTER as the head of state... or you can put the PEOPLE in charge. You can't have BOTH.

We?! I thought I asked a very reasonable question about voting oversight in Russia. You know very well Americans don't see Russia as having a democracy. Did Putin rise to the top through elections?

Brutal dictators do not restore the jury system as Putin did.

Brutal dictators do not release people from prison after 2 short years as Putin did with ***** Riot years ago.

Yup....im sure Moscow beats them in everything....LOL.

You can fall asleep on a park bench ....in January...in most US cities and wake up some hours later, possibly even with a cop poking you with his nightstick telling you to move.

In Moscow they'll probably just remove your frozen stiff carcass and toss it.:)), and that goes for 99% of Mafialand.
