In an article appearing in Business Insider Elon Musk is suggesting we should establish an upper age limit of 70 for anyone seeking election to a national public elected office. We already have low age limits for our elected offices, now we also need high limits as we have far too many really old people populating our elected political offices. I fully agree with him and I am over age 80.

Yeah, well what Elon Musk fails to realize is that people can live well past the age of 70 and still function at a high level. Look at President Biden for instance.......oh wait!

It would be a good idea, but I don't think Pelosi and McConnell are every going to let that come to the floor of the House and Senate.

There should be no limit on age. There should be limits on cognitive ability perhaps. The two don't necessarily coincide. Some who are 30 don't have the mental quickness of others who are 70.

Would you suggest some testing as to cognitive ability ........for folks that want t o run for office. I personalty think that anyone running for POTUS should have complete battery of psychological testing to quality . There SHOULD be QUALIFICATIONS for the jobs (elected office)......... that are specific and not just based on financial capability.

I have no problem with that in principle. In practice, especially in the partisan atmosphere of the two party system, I do have concern over how such testing would be carried out.

I’m down with that. Let’s just do it after the 2024 election.

Wasn't too long back we commonly heard "Never trust anybody over 30". In most countries, the wisdom of maturity is valued, often very highly. That doesn't mean all older people are wise, but they have had the time and experience that teaches wisdom, and that is a resource hard to find anywhere else. Age can certainly disqualify people too, but that is an individual situation that isn't justly applied as an overall rule.

I'm also 80, and I damn well know I couldn't handle the job of president. By that, I mean not only the physical elements (on call 24/7), but the quickness and agility needed (mentally) for the job. The bad part of that idea is that it wouldn't do anything to keep under 70 fools out of office....

Right. Testing is never going to fly since there will never be agreement on the tests.

At one time you could not be a commercial airline pilot after age 60. Ask yourself why? You have to be 35 to run for POTUS. Ask yourself why? So it makes sense to also have an upper age limit for all politicians. Ask yourself if you would turn over the running of a country to the people in an assisted living facility or a nursing home? Why do we brag about how long a politician has been in office or how old they are?

One would think the party leaders and the voters in the primaries would take care of it, but as the say: “It’s not about who votes, but who counts the votes.”
A majority chose a senile septuagenarian as a leader with a horrible VP. You can’t fix stupid, and the country deserves all of the misery it gets.
Prices do not come down significantly due to the way inventory is financed, and wages are forced up unevenly depending on competition. Wage earners without appreciable assets are pretty well screwed for the next ten - fifteen years.

Insane people don't know they are insane. Senile people don't know they are senile. Fish don't know they are wet. A senile politician's staff will prop the politician up because the staff wants to protect their paychecks. And who among us will give up a gravy train?

The testing should be required but instead of disqualifing the person, it just gets publicly released so that the people can decide. If the media could not cover for Biden with their lies, he probably would not have been elected.

We're not talking about milk here. There are people 30 years old who can't rub two stick together, and a hell of a lot more that can't understand economics or justice or just plain getting the job done.
Competence, honesty and meritocracy should be required of everyone seeking a political office- but the people often see it as a popularity contest or make the choice that looks like it will benefit them most- even it that is revenge against society for not making them happy.

I'm not saying age is not an issue, but it's not really one determining qualification. We need to qualify those we elect, but we need to do that based on something besides their ability to sell hogwash and their ages. .

Bravo. I am surprised there would be any debate left over this. After all of the Biden senile speculation I would assume this would be a slam dunk. I am glad he stated everyone elected to national public office. It should apply to more than the presidency.

What a crazy system where we allow the workers of the job to decide their own conditions and pay?
