Here is my take for whatever it’s worth:

    1) We are a very primitive species in early stages of development.

    2) Recently our technology has developed exponentially. For example, it took at least 5000 years to get from wheels made of rock to the building of a rickety primitive airplane and clunky old cars. Then from 1950 to 2000 we developed supercomputers that can be carried around in our pockets and planes that can travel at Mach 5 and a worldwide web which allows people from all around the world to communicate in milliseconds.

    3) The leaders and governments of the largest powers on the planet are still engaged in a silly primitive game in which they are all competing and scheming about ways to screw each other over and win some imaginary game. A more evolved species would spend more time and energy trying to form a system of mutually beneficial synergistic actions that would benefit the whole planet and all of the people on it. However whenever people suggest such a plan, paranoid idiots claim it is a part of some giant scheme to enslave the entire planet.

    4) In the past 50 years we have taken some productive steps regarding gross pollution being churned out of automobiles factories and sewage systems into our air, waterways and oceans however with the rapid growth of population and industry we are still doing more harm than good to the planet as a whole.

    5) Until we evolve to the point where we don’t keep pointing fingers at each other and instead start working together, we will continue to poison and destroy this planet. We have the technology and intelligence to create abundant energy and resources for all of our people without trashing the environment and to terraform our planet to make it more inhabitable for the people, plants and animals. Until that transpires all of these competing factions will continue to engage in silly political games and beat their heads against the wall and make little or no real advancement in science as it pertains to climate and ecology.

Does it? I guess just because Judith Curry says so it must be so.

There is a word for copy/paste without attribution

the paper shows the climate models still require refining - no one is disputing that - that is why they have broad “confidence intervals”

Aaaaaaand you just proved you do not know the implication of what being a “preprint” journal article entails

Please please gain some basic understanding of how science works

Yours is both a philosophical take, and also a very true one. I think pragmatically will have to find ways to save the planet even with a good percentage of the population quite happy to tear everything down to neurotically engorge on as much power as possible.

Cost is what will save us. Renewables are now cheaper than coal. Electric cars will be cheaper to run than gas guzzlers. We just have to plan our way out of this and that is the issue

You asked for science and now you dodge the answers. And FYI: There's nothing from Judith Curry.

Renewable dreams meet reality in Germany.
Weather Lulls: Germany Forced To Burn 20% More Coal, The Very Energy Source That’s To Be Phased Out
    By P Gosselin on 27. November 2021

The energy source that Germany moves to shut down, rescued the country from widespread blackouts in 2021.

Blackout News reports that more of Germany’s power is being produced by coal and nuclear fuels. In 2021, due to unfavorable weather conditions, wind and solar energy production plummeted in 2021 compared to 2020. “Germany’s power mix is getting dirtier.”

The figures were compiled by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Energiebilanzen (Working Group for Energy Budgets) and based on the first 9 months of the year. Compared to 2020, the first nine months of 2021 saw a 3.3% increase in primary energy consumption – mainly due to economic reco0very.

20% more coal power in first 9 months of 2021

But what surprised experts, Blackout News reports, were the sources of the energy: “Here, the largest increase in absolute terms can be seen in the coal-fired power plants that emit the most CO2. Hard coal consumption alone was 20 per cent higher in the first three quarters of the current year than in the previous year. Electricity and heat generation from hard coal increased by 28 percent.”

Lack of wind and sun, despite added capacity

According to Blackout News: “The working group attributes the high additional consumption of coal for energy generation compared to the same period last year to the unfavorable weather conditions for renewable energies. Wind power and solar plants delivered significantly less electricity compared to the same period last year despite higher installation capacity.”. . .

US energy policy is descending into madness.
Complete Madness In The Biden Administration: Energy Policy
    November 27, 2021/ Francis Menton

    • Is President Biden doing anything right? To this observer, his policies range from at best merely incompetent, to at worst malicious hatred of the country and people whose interests he was elected to advance.

    • Somewhere in between those two extremes we have Biden’s energy policy. In this arena, appropriate adjectives would be inconsistent, incoherent, and destructive. Don’t even attempt to make sense of it. To summarize in one word, it is complete madness.

    • I’m old enough to remember the 1970s, and the two “oil shocks” that occurred during that decade.

“Slow Disaster Playing Out” As Germany Moves To Shut Down 8.5 GW Of Baseload Nuclear Capacity
    By P Gosselin on 28. November 2021

At FaceBook, Dane Peter Bardland presents a chart and commentary on Germany’s upcoming rapid nuclear power phaseout.

By the end of 2022, the government will have shut down another 6 plants with a total (baseload) capacity of 8.54 gigawatts!

    Chart: Presented by Peter Bardland

Yesterday we commented here that Germany will in fact be shutting down all the baseload power sources, which ironically kept the country from blacking out in 2021 because wind and solar power failed to deliver as expected. . . .

Renewables propaganda has run into energy reality.
Fossil Fuel Restriction Dam Starting To Break
    December 04, 2021/ Francis Menton

    • Somewhere a couple of decades or so ago, the rich parts of the world embarked on a program of replacing energy from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) with energy from intermittent “renewables” (mainly wind and solar). In trendy academic, journalistic, and otherwise progressive circles, the idea took hold that this was the way to “save the planet.”

    • This program was undertaken without any detailed engineering study of how or whether it might actually work, or how much it might cost to fully implement. In the trendy circles, there took hold a blind faith in the complete ability of the government, by dispensing taxpayer funds, to order up whatever innovation might be needed to move us forward to this energy utopia.

    • The latest UN-orchestrated effort to implement the renewable energy program, known as COP 26, has just broken up. To read the verbiage emanating from the affair, all is on track, if a bit slower than one might have hoped.

    • But I have long predicted that this program would come to an end when (absent some miraculous innovation that nobody has yet conceived) the usage of the renewables got to a sufficient level that their costs and unworkability could not be covered up any longer. Until very recently the pressure of elite groupthink has been able to maintain a united front of lip service to the cause.

    • But consider a few developments from the past few weeks, just since the end of COP 26:

While you paint a pretty picture, it's the false dawn of 'sustainability', which we know now is not the answer. All that does is foster the continuation of the very behaviours which will ultimately destroy us (and the planet).

We either need to reduce the population of the planet by about 6 billion, or we need to reduce our standard of living to that of a Third World peasant. Racing to find new ways to support ever-increasing consumption, is the actual problem. It doesn't matter whether we momentarily find 'green' ways of supporting this profligacy - the behaviour itself will still be the cause of planetary and species collapse.

Liberals don't seem to think that anyone can challenge them on the actual science that would demonstrate that their climate hoax is just a method to wrest power from the vast majority of folks around the world and leash them to their scarcity model. I think they just didn't realize that folks would so rapidly figure out their scheme...

Seriously. Do you not understand basic geophysics? You realize that "reserves" are not finite, and never would be. It's kind of sad reading posts like yours. I doubt anyone gives the IPCC any credibility anymore given their so obvious and numerous conflicts of interest. Why do you support their goal of sublimating the people of the world to their dream of scarcity and dependence?

    Well said!

How ironic it is that the average middle class climate warrior, has a larger carbon footprint than the rubes who don't give a crap. I personally know quite a few people who vote "Greens", yet travel frequently. That's cartoonishly contradictory. Worse still, they're also the types who spend on newly manufactured goods without hesitation, eat out constantly, import things without a second thought, and generally do nothing at all to back up their claimed philosophy. If anything, they go in the opposite direction. Buying 'ethical' manufactured goods and driving an electric car just make you more of a liar and fake - because you're adding in virtue signalling and conscience salves.

The nature of the planet and the universe is infinite abundance. With the technology we have today there is no real scarcity of space or any other life sustaining material. There is enough of everything here on earth to feed 6 billion more people. We certainly do not have to kill off 6 billion people to create balance. The only shortage here on earth is currency or legal tender which is tightly controlled by a small cabal of greedy controlling entities. We certainly could, produce, manage and distribute our resources more efficiently and more equitably.

As I said, we are at a fairly primitive stage in our development as a species. We are capable of far greater achievements physically mentally and spiritually. We are trying to get past the ultra primitive time when the biggest brute bullied everyone else into doing his bidding under threat of violence. We have refined it to the point where the people with the best plan to scheme, lie, murder and cheat have the upper hand in controlling large areas of land and large amounts of people for selfish purposes and nefarious reasons. The next logical step would be to expose and disempower these types and look to people on a higher ethical, spiritual and mental plane to lead us forward.

I'm confident we could enter a new ice age and many people would still be trying to stop global warming even as they freeze to death as long as the corporate political elite's media was telling them to do so.

Good take. I feel there also needs to be a rejuvenation of the consciousness of the human species. In particular away from the ridiculous notion that we can control & dominate nature.( I.e. do whatever we want and the planet will suck it up).
