Yea.......except that Falkland islands were British territory and Taiwan has nothing to do with us. UK is our ally, but we did not send troops when they went to war over Falkland, and then again, why would we involve ourselves in other peoples war.
We gave them state of the art air-to-air missiles. We gave them satellite imagery intelligence. We let them use our communications satellites. We promised to let them use of one of our Marine aircraft carriers if their own carrier was sunk in the war. And had that happened, it would have been operated by US contractors. We gave them the fuel they needed to operate that far from home.
If they had encountered catastrophic troubles like losing one of their carriers we were fully prepared to do so.
Plus runway matting to build and extend runways at Ascension Island, and Shrike anti radar missiles, as James F. Dunigan wrote in "A Quick & Dirty Guide to War" "for the British there is no ally like your long lost colony the United States".
COVID really isn't much of an issue here in Texas. Our businesses are thriving, our kids are learning in real schools (Texas kids will be doctors and astronauts when blue state kids are still struggling to read.) You rarely see anyone in a mask, although anyone is free to wear one. I just got back from the supermarket where the shelves are full and it was crowded. People don't even talk much about COVID anymore... its old news. We all had big celebrations for the holidays and we're pretty much back to pre-China Virus normal. We have better things to do than obsess over the China Virus.
I'll discuss anything at all. That's why I post stuff and and answer stuff. Why do you say what you said?
But the Chinese are getting aggressive about controlling a location they think is theirs ... but isn't. Just like the Argentinians claimed the Falklands.
"Cases" don't mean squat. Tere are alot more "cases" of chicken pox, mumps and measles. It is DEATHS that count. And Texas is 38th in the nation for "DEATHS" from COVID per 100,000 population. Do you hide under your bed fearing mumps?
Why should we sit back and watch a crazy totalitarian nation take over free nations? Maybe once they take over all of asia and the china sea, we can look back and ask that question.
And neither is Taiwan. Falkland shows we will screw our allies when convenient, and in case of Taiwan is is very convenient, especially when they are not even a military ally.
No. The UK is our ally. When we betray an ally that is a horrible and shameful act. We should never do it. There would be nothing even remotely convenient about betraying Taiwan. Taiwan is a military ally.
Argentina was an ally too We owe them nothing, and never promised to fight and die for them. Likewise, they never promised to fight and die for us, which is why they never do. Why didn't they offer to take over policing Afghanistan? Its because they don't give a rats ass about helping the US. They don't act like one, because they aren't one. The hell with them, and their demands to sacrifice US blood and treasure for them. They need to shut the heck up, and neo-cons need to do the same, and think about the US instead.
We are the military ally that Taiwan depended on but we don't have to die on that hill today. Situations change and this one certainly has.
Nothing has changed. Taiwan is still our friend, and we are still going to protect them. It is true though that the war will not happen today. China isn't ready yet.
Not really. Sure we did. They are our ally. They are our ally and they act like our ally. No. We will protect our friends and allies.
In fact, American foreign policy before Trump has been, with few exceptions, consistently "grossly incompetent". At this point is hard to ignore the obvious.
